DA*300, what a Star!

Just picked up a DA*300 for my K-1, what a dream lens! I was originally looking at a DA*200 but I knew I needed something longer for for the F1 GP so found this at a dealer for a decent price.

Its actually smaller than I imagined, and very usable to hand hold for a few hours, like at the F1 GP over the weekend.

I plan on adding a DA*200 and DA*55 too at some point....

One of the first test shots, pin sharp focus on the Cows nose, showing all the flies!

And a big test at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix at the weekend! AF was quick (apart from when it missed and racked all the way back, an AF Limited would be ideal) and AF-C tracking was not too bad at all I found.

Really usable shots even though very heavily cropped...

I've had the following on the MZ-5N/MZ-S or the K-01/K-3II.

FA*24 f2 - Great on crop as a fast ~35mm, excellent sharpness in the center wide open, only 'good' stopped down all over. Poor lens hood design and easily scratched.

FA20-35 f4 - Excellent wide zoom, very compact and light. Sharp pretty much at all apertures and zoom range although quite a lot of aberrations wide open @20mm.

FA43 f1.9 - Excellent, my favorite lens.

FA50 f1.7 - Great small and fast prime, only sold as I used the FA43 f1.9 Limited more.

FA135 f2.8 - Very compact for a fast short telephoto prime, somewhat nervous bokeh in some situation but very sharp from wide open. Again some aberrations wide open but easy to fix in PP.

All 4 had quite fast AF, the FA20-35 and FA50 especially but all a little noisy as you would expect from screw-drive.

K-1 or KP for portraiture

I have to say, going from a K-3II to a K-1, and doing lots of portraits for work, I found the shallower depth of field when using a wider aperture actually a hindrance, as I was having to stop down to f4 or smaller to get any amount of the face in focus.
This was offset though with the exceptional higher ISO performance of the K-1, and the KP looks to be almost as good now though.

How will the new DFA85 1.4 be better than the FA85?

I was interested in the announcement for the new D-FA* 85mm, I currently own a Sigma 85mm f1.4 HSM which is excellent although I don't tend to use it that often for casual shots as its quite big/heavy. I don't doubt after seeing the prototype of the new D-FA* 50mm f1.4, that the new Pentax will be larger and heavier than the Sigma, much like the new Sigma Art Lenses.

I can see the attraction of getting a standard set of primes out first (Fast f1.4 24mm, 50mm and 85mm for example) but for me, a more compact ~85mm f1.8 with WR and DC motor would be amazing. I loved using the old K85 f1.8, so small and beautiful build!

I still think the best, however for bokeh, transitions and sharpness was the Voigtlander 90mm f3.5 APO (both shot wide open at f3.5)

I have to say, as a K-1 and MZ-S owner, I do miss the lightweight/portability of the MZ-S/FA43 combo.

My perfect walk-around, just sling it on and shoot away. I have yet to really bond with the K-1/FA43 combo, the D-FA 28-105 gets far more time on it so far.

The MZ-S has excellent handling with the smaller lenses (FA43, FA50, FA20-35, FA135 etc), I don't doubt that the size/grip is much better on the K-1 for longer lenses.

I have the K-1/D-FA28-105mm combo, coming from a K-3II/DA*16-50mm, the former feels a lot better balanced and more reliable results (AF, Sharpness etc).

Thanks, I'm still searching for a compromise for a FF wide angle, something with straight blades like the FA43, the only real option seems to be anoter FA*24....

Lovely shots, I have often thought of downsizing my Sigma 85mm f1.4 to the FA77, DA70 or D-FA100 Macro but not quite decided yet.

I would love a more compact portrait lens like the K85 or VL90 I used to have

I think the only downside of the older 85mm f1.4 HSM was its size and weight, other than that its pretty spot on!:)

There is however an updated Cine version, rumoured to be a teaser for the new Art version :)

Is this allowed ...could the K-3 be as good as the K-1 ?

The main two differences for me, going from a K-3II to the K-1 have been High ISO performance and being able to push files a lot more.
I tend to mainly shoot the K-1 on Auto ISO between 100 and 1600, noise is not really an issue whatsoever in that area, and really usable between 3200 and 6400.

Like this shot at ISO6400, IIRC with no NR in LR.

These two for example, were shot in very bright light but I was able to push the shadows a LOT more than previously with the K-3II, no they are not the most amazing shots but the results did not look too 'HDR'ish.

As an owner of the Sigma DP1X (~28mm equivalent APS-C compact), previously a DP3M (~75mm equivalent APS-C compact) and a massive fan of the FA43.....

I would love a 28mm/43mm equivalent APS-C compact, it would make a pretty perfect walk around combo with the GR series.

I keep meaning to pick up a GR as a replacement for my DP1X, its getting a bit long in the teeth and 4.5mp output, sharp as it is, is a bit of a step back from my 36mp K-1

On a GRIII, I would say WR would be the main thing to add for me that would sway me over a used GR or GRII.

No problem for me, fast, silent and accurate. Only used in portrait/slow moving stuff though so I can't comment on any bike tracking accuracy.....

It will be interesting to see the changes for the new Art version.
The only real complaint I have with the existing version is its size/weight. Performance wise, its outstanding.

The existing 85mm f1.4 HSM on my K-1 last week (at f1.4)

I think it seems to live in the shadow of the 31 and 77 quite a lot, as IMO it really shines on Film/FF.
