Manual K-Mount Lens Suggestion Time - Travel Kit

My current plan is my Tamron 17, a 35mm f2, and maybe the 85mm f2. The Tokina 28-70 is my single-lens walking zoom.

They could pack the A 24 f2.8's optics, aperture blades, the whole lot into the body of the DA 35 f2.4 and I would still be very interested in that lens. Give it the full pack of today's coatings (HD, SP on the front element, etc) and a bayonet hood mount and I want to believe that it would be well liked.

Big meanie kenspo says that the days of light, small, inexpensive lens like that are over at Pentax. I'm still trying to get over the emotional blow.

You act like I haven't been pushing this same concept for years!

Actually my first wish would be a 25mm f2.4 lens in the plastic fantastic style of the DA 35 f2.4 or DA 50 1.8. Not sure what optical design to partially recycle to get there. Second idea was the HA DA 28 Ltd that you mention. Third would be something in the teens, like an HA D-FA 18mm f3.2. All of these should be full frame compatible even if the plastic 25 isn't advertised as such, like the DA 35 2.4 and 50 1.8.

Need Advice For Secondary Zoom Lens

Tamron 17-50 is $300 or less brand new these days. Get that and a third-party 70-200 or one of the DA 55-300's. Otherwise you'll be giving up image quality (the 18-135 is a great lens but it's got some distortion wider than ~24mm and goes soft after ~75mm) or speed or the lens just doesn't go there.

Another way to do this is to get a decent zoom that covers the zoom range that you're interested in and then target specific points where you really want a high quality prime for whatever purpose you have in mind. The 18-135 is great for this. Then get a DA 50 1.8 for portraits and low-light. The DA 35 2.4 for whatever you like to use it for. Maybe a ~100mm macro for bugs. DA 15 for really wide stuff. You get the idea.

DA 50 1.8's are practically free! FREE! And I find that I reach for my DA 50 way before my DA 35 2.4.

I totally agree with having a 16-85 on a trip like this for general versatility, IQ, and the WR aspects it brings. Same thinking I have with my 18-135. I just have a weird soft spot for 28mm on crop and on full-frame both.

I've been saying this for some time now, that something between 24 and 28mm should have been here a long time ago. Canon has that 24mm STM prime and Pentax, the small prime company, has...

How do you like the F 28 vs. the FA? The F seems more sharp, the FA seems more pixel-dusty, but I've used neither.

I like the kit outside of your lenses as well as there's just too many going along. Here's a list from what you have;
DA 15
DA 16-85

A faster 28, 35, or 50mm lens would be nice if you've got one. FA 28, FA 35, or DA 50 1.8. I don't see one listed. Another combo could be a DA 15, FA 28, and DA 70. That'd be pretty awesome.

Lens transition from APS-C to 35mm full frame

At least it'd be a constant f2.8 max aperture. But it's not small or light.

The DA 70 just seems really hard to replace. Not much out there like it. Getting something with AF seems even harder.

I think there are some weird suggestions in here. I mean no disrespect but when the guy is trying to emulate the DA 70 2.4 but more functional on full frame, why are we getting 4x zooms with slow apertures or 3x power zooms with slow apertures?

Maybe the M 35-70 2.8-3.5? Jupiter 9, an 85mm f2.0 that will require a mount adapter? Sigma 70 Macro (not small and light for a prime but seems excellent in every other way)?

Agreed, a 4x zoom with a slow aperture isn't really at all what the Original Poster seems to be looking for.

Here are some ideas I've had that should come in nicely under that $500 you mentioned;

Samyang (et al) 85mm 1.4
Pentax M 85 f2
Tamron 90mm f2.5 Macro, the 52B and 52BB sisters, which will require an Adaptall PK or PK-A mount if it doesn't come with one.

How do you like the images you're getting with the DA 35 f2.4? The few I've seen I thought were very nice, but there's not a lot out there.

It really sounds like an F or FA 28 would be more in-line with your budget and would probably be to your liking. I have owned neither and currently want, well, both. Would probably go to the FA 28 just because it seems a bit more artistic. Obviously neither is available new.

The FA 31 seems very cool but it's so much money...

Couple things; if you're cool with grabbing those three lenses, then trying to shrink your kit while remaining a k-mount user seems kind of weird. A DA 15, the 18-50, and a DA 50 1.8 with a K-01 is maybe more in-line with your goal of getting a k-mount based kit that competes with your m43. So there you go, more equipment to purchase.

You're welcome.

Most if not all of these images were probably taken around f8, yes? It's a guess as I don't see a link to exif info.

I think portraiture might show more differences between your 18-50 and 20-40. The pictures of the river scene or the single tree shouldn't stress even average lenses.

Alternative primes; DA 21, F or FA 28, Sigma 28 EX (have it, love the IQ, it's huge though) FA 35 f2, DA 35 Ltd, DA 40 or DA 40 XS. I also like the Tamron 17-50. The low-light/hi-ISO performance of the K-70 and the DA 21 or any of the f2.8 28's would make for a very capable combination.

EDIT: Thinking about this some more, an 18-50 might be a really nice zoom to be the 'anchor' around which you build a kit. Good quality primes where you really want something at a specific focal length, and then a do-all zoom that's affordable and easy to pack along. For me that's the DA 18-135, and then I have good primes at 15, 28, and 50mm (along with a bunch of other random lenses, but you get the idea). A good ultra-wide, a good normal lens on crop for walk-about/do-anything, and a good short-tele for portraits. It seems like you're about there anyway and the 20-40 just doesn't have enough of what it takes to buy its way onto your shelf.

When the phrase "I suspect" shows up that often I think it's square in the land of guesses.

I'm really hopeful that this lens is as good as they seem to indicate it will be. Old machinery or not.

Both can be true.

That said, I wanted something well wider of 50mm, so getting a 45mm pancake seems a bit silly. I think the XR-7 needs a Ricoh P 50 1.7 or 55 1.2 instead, right?

... like my shelf needed more 50's...
