Zeiss ZK LBA - pics, notes, thoughts?

Frank,

Yes, I used Contax equipment for several years. From 1980 to 2003. I even had an N digital. And yes, I use the C/Y ZF stuff with a 5D. The flexibility of using Contax, Olympus and others injects a level of fun in my photography. The modifications that you have made are one way to use C/Y and I've seen another approach using M42 mounts. Also, there is a fellow in Japan who modifies his Pentax mount so it accepts Contax lenses. And still retains the ability to mount Pentax glass. I really don't know about Nikon but I think you are correct.

To me, the Contax bodies are absolutely the most beautiful pieces of equipment. I have a collection of 8 which represent the progress from
quartz shutters, multi mode exposure, integral motor drives to the RTS lll, AX, S2 and Aria. The N digital is a wonderful, full frame unit with some of the best glass ever made. It just was a pain to use. Battery problems, mostly. But those 6 meg files were really something. It kind
of shows how the rest of the mfg's force feed us.

I very much enjoy the Pentax K20D. And happy that Zeiss chose to make them in ZK mounts. I'm just trying to be patient until a Pentax FF is made.

Really enjoyed your blog and images.

Frank,

I share your enthusiasm for the Zeiss products. Actually, I'm very surprised that more photographers aren't using them. My C/Y collection
goes from 28mm to 135mm but I also use the ZM, ZF and ZK lenses.
My Contax lenses are not converted but just using an adapter. With the
focus confirmation it's pure pleasure.

Attached are views of the Colorado aspen. (100/2 ZK)

To be truthful, I have a hard time telling them apart. To me, I think the 100/2 has a little more of the 3D effect and that the 100/2 is a little sharper at or near infinity. I used to think that the colors of the lanthar were slightly more subdued but now I think it's the light that make the difference.
They are both wonderful lenses and support my passion for mid tele length
for landscape work.

Below is an example of the 100/2 at infinity. My technique for posting is bad and the sharpness is diminished.

Here are three pics from a K20 and ZK 100/2. I foolishly put that lens
up for sale and nobody gave it a thought. Lucky me.

The shots are the popular bokeh oriented ones and in this case the lens
sure is satisfying.

Spherical aberration as a friend of bokeh - which lenses?

The Sonnar shot is the full frame minus a little crop off the right hand side.
The shot is very representative of what the lens accomplishes wo. Everything is soft, progressively, fore, mid and background. The design of this lens found a niche in shooting head shots of Hollywood stars in the 30's and 40's. Soft glowing edges.

I don't know how to answer your question about SA. The soft focus lens uses element movement technique but produces a completely different result. I did a lot of Polaroid transfers, when that was going on, and the soft focus prints are very close. The prints look nothing like those on the screen.

Back to the topic. It is known that the Sonnar design has tendancy for
SA but is more successful than Planars for low flare and high contrast.
So, your exploration might take you to identifying Pentax compatible glass which uses the Sonnar design. Six or seven elements in three groups.

It's a fascinating subject and thanks for getting our minds going.

Spherical aberration as a friend of bokeh - which lenses?

Lots of files of my work get dumped due to unpleasant bokeh.
So, I started to look for alternatives.

I attach three files. The first is a Zeiss M 50/1.5 that Kelly referred to above. The second two used a "soft focus" lens which which allows one
to shift an aspherical element. So maybe this post is not too far off topic.

In a landscape pic, I find leaves hard to photograph and I am pleased
with the softness and mystery.

While focusing and metering are different, on a K20D you do get

Kelly requested shots from the 50/1.4 at 1.4 to investigate the background
character. Sorry to be so tardy.

First shot is a wall covered with vines and the bright strip on the left edge is
the end of the wall. You can see that the OOF begins rather quickly.

The second and third shots are the same wall with the background up close.
Apologies for the subjects being out of focus.

Hope these help with your analysis. I have a few others if you want to go further.

be well,

You are really the boke master. I agree that the larger the subject most often finds the background further away producing the softer dreamy thing.
I so enjoy your committed approach to the discovery of each lens varying characteristics. You are a credit to this forum.
