TriLens: does anybody use it?

The way they are advertising it, with photographers using hoods reversed on the lenses and a lens under their armpit, is ridiculous. The magnetic stick-on clips for your lenscaps to "protect" the mounts (talk about weather/dust-sealing...NONE), makes this product one I cannot imagine photographers would really use, pro or amateur. To me it seems just one of the many products created to solve non-existent problems. A gadget which will end up at the bottom of the drawer.

I have moved my photo collection from Flickr to my own website and while doing so I have tried to be more critical and apply a filter. Not everything I thought was great 13 years ago, still is. One of the goals I've set myself is to dig into my 5Tb store of raw files and pick out the original of one of my posted Flickr images, rework it and post an image of the day on FB. It's a lot of fun to see if, with up to date software and expanded processing experience I can "re-life" old images. Usually that works out prettey well and I end up being amazed at how goods that K110D, K20D, K-5 etc. actually was. I also see results from lenses I have since parted with and with new techniques and lens-profiles the images end up cleaner wnd with less distortions.

Today's image was a HDR 3-exposure bracket shot 10 years ago in the center of Bucharest, Romania with a K20D:

Earlier this week a tooling detail from one of the largest steam-powered pumping stations in the Netherlands:

And of course a beautiful and very tranquil bit of La Palma, the least touristic Canary island - 2017 so K-5 IIs:

An awesome jellyfish in the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta(2011):

En the "Waag" the tower at the edge of my hometown's (Alkmaar, NL) cheese market, in 2010:

I have noticed how relaxing it is to dig into this virtual mountain of pixels in those 5Tb of raw files and see whether any gold nuggets can be found. Reprocessing also enables me to be astonished at the amount of detail there still is even in those smaller files, sometimes even more than was possible with my software skills at the time. All in all, great therapee which I can recommend to all!

My image of the day on this rather gloomy and grey Saturday. We may not be able to travel in these lockdown days, but I can certainly travel backwards in time to 2011 in my personal image collection, back the the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. I took the file (originally shot on a K20D with the DA50mm/f2.8 macro) and reapplied some cutting edge software to really bring out the vibrant colors of this magnificent creature. At the same time I was able to get rid of some ugly dirt and greasy streaks on the aquarium pane. Have a great weekend, everyone! See you tomorrow.

Somewhere in Milwaukee back in 2009 with my K100D-Super and the Sigma 24-135mm - I just redid the processing with ART1.5 as I'm currently doing with a lot of my K110D and K100D-Super raw files - see if I can squeeze more out of them.

Import tax / GST threshold

Of course foreign ebay sellers (or aliexpress, or US Amazon or etc.etc.) do not show duty or VAT - that is the responsibility of the importer i.e. us the consumers/buyers. Ebay does have an international shipping and clearance program though which will quote the price inclusive of everything D2D and will handle clearance for you - at a premium obviously. Next year, foreign sellers such as ebay or aliexpress will be able to sign on to the EU Comission's "One Stop Shop" concept which will hopefully increase the number of online sellers who show all-inclusive prices to EU consumers.

Import tax / GST threshold

Currently, the EU wide threshold for duty is €150 and for VAT it is only €22. The VAT threshold will disappear next year so that every package is taxable for VAT at whatever the rate is in the member state of import regardless of the value. VAT rates are quite high (between 16 and 27% across the EU27) and duty rates are quite moderate - 0% on cameras and 6.7% on lenses and filters. It does not matter whether goods are new or used, the rates stay the same, only the value on which those rates are applied may vary (according to WTO guidelines). Lowballing is an offense and if caught will lead to penalties and/or seizure of the goods.

Duty applies only to import as others have correctly stated but VAT is a non-discriminatory tax as it applies to all consumer purchase inside and outside the EU. Only difference is that consumer prices in the EU are required to be shown inclusive of any VAT (different from the US f.i.) so what's on the pricetag is what you pay at the cash register or checkout webpage.

New software on old files

So I have moved my total history stack from Flickr to my own website and with that came the need to do some much overdue culling. I also thought i would be quite neat to have a go at some old captures with new software (as well as the new skill learnt over the more than 10 years since).

So here's a 2009 conversion of a PEF raw file shot with the K100D-Super and the Sigma 24-135mm zoom. It's a bit noisy in the darker colored areas, the lens' pincushion effect is visible, it is clearly a bit oversharpened and the keystoning could have been more precise:

Back to 2020 and redoing this raw file with the newest release of ART (Another Raw Therapee), Gimp and GMIC. I am quite surprised the file stood the test of time so well. I can put it in between my KP's 24MP files on a web gallery or even large screen and and would not seem out of place. I even printed off both versions and the new one is that much cleaner and show ample detail.

My conclusion is that we had damned good Pentax bodies back in 2009 and we have superb software available today, way more than was available to your average open-source photographer back then.

I would say even Dropbox is not a very good solution - still someone else holding your files

That makes quite a lot of sense. Unlike you, I didn't invite feedback, nor participated very much in offering it to others. I always used Flickrs as a platform from which to share images to other websites through the use of direct linking or BBCode. With such a successful feedback loop you would indeed not benefit from a move.

For me, that is slightly different. I tend to get my feedback here, on FB and Instagram and on other websites where I post images and/or comments. Also, I intend to use my webspace to host a professional blog in my field of expertise and maybe more bits 'nd pieces. For the exact same amount of my Flickr subscription I can now manage my own requirements. On top of that I would prefer a more simplistic and graphic way of presenting my images.

Love that Bokeh image pool and your images by the way. I experiment quite a bit with a Revuenon 55mm/f1.2 and a Sigma 85mm/f1.4 and try to get better. Love your shots! You've seen this lad a number of times on this very Pentax Forum:

I get you. That makes a lot of sense. Viewbug have been trying to swing me with goodies like that as well basically stating I would end up with a free account and then some if I redeemed all of the codes. However, I do not use anythin from Adobe, no Windows or IOS software, nothing, nada so those "goodies" don't do anything at all for me.

To me, the cost is the cost. TANSTAAFL

Here you go! This was my order history over the past few years:

You'll see that I paid $45 for two years in 2016 and $50 a year in 2018 and 2019 each so the price basically doubled. Fast forward to today where I've received a notice to update my payment for the coming year:

If I do nothing, my cost will immediately go up to €7.49*12 and that is €90 which equals to a whopping $105 (!!!). This will happen fully automatically if I do nothing and I quote "Your plan will automatically change to a Flickr Pro 1 Month on November 12, 2020."

But I can do myself a favor and pay for the whole year so the bill comes to €65.88 which works out to $77. So even though they are "giving me a discount" my cost compared to last year still goes up by more than 50% - compare it to only 4 years ago and my cost has even tripled (or more than quadrupled if I do nothing)!

Saying goodbye to Flickr

I've been a Flickr member since 2007, that makes 13 years this year. The last few years a paying Pro member. As prices slowly went up I had investigated the cost of my own hosting and domain name before but it never made too much sense. Until this year, that is. This year Flickr/Smugmug came with a new nuissance: changing payment processors from Braintree to Digital River. Why that needs to affect me and why I need to be bothered by this is anyone's guess. Of course this is just for "our convenience" but in the meantime Flickr lets us know that "Monthly subscriptions have a higher monthly rate" and that "you will be automatically moved to a monthly plan."

You know what? Enough is enough! The ever-increasing cost since 2013, the fact they cannot manage my switch from Yahoo Mail (who even remembers) to Gmail and now this. I have purchased an account from a national hosting provider for 15Gb and unlimited traffic, registered my own domain which I intend to use for a lot of other things besides photography and have invested in a paid account for Chevereto, a neat web album software.

Points in order:
1. 15Gb is not a lot, certainly not "unlimited" like on Flickr Pro
2. Using and having to set up your own album software is complicated
3. Flickr made it easy to share to FB and by the use of BBCode to almost every forum

Yep, but since the FOTKI scandal (it announced to its paying subscribers on June 8th, 2012 that it is holding their original files ransom unless they purchase extra credits... will remove those files contrary to its original terms of service.) I have not entrusted my originals to any webservice and I have my own triple-redundant backup system with a 5Tb drive connected to my router and two identical drives being mirrored, one which is kept outside the house.

Storage of 15Gb is more than enough for 1280px wide images which I generally use to share. Point to tell, I currently have some 550 images uploaded which including the gallery software take up about 600Mb space. And I have taken the a small hosting package at €50 + VAT.

The hosting provider supplies a variety of install scripts such as zenphoto, chevereto, phpmyimage and more so I tested a couple and eventually did a one-click install of a couple of them in different subfolders on my webspace. Chevereto came out trumps even though its formatting of albums and imagepages is a bit limited. The sharing options are abundant and very convenient:

Social network sharing:

And embedding or linking:

I'm sure I'll find more negatives as I go along not in the least due to my lack of experience with websites and self-hosting of images, but here we go! It's a start. Take a look and let me know what you think: Photo-Graphics - Photography with a twist. I do want to limit and curate my images a bit better than I used to do on Flickr, not just share anything and everything indiscriminately, provided I find some self-control in a drawer somewhere around the house:lol:.

Not anymore and not with your current setup. For sure, of all my Pentax bodies, the K20D was the all-out winner in terms of form factor. I loved the way it fit my hand with- or without grip. The shots I got with it I still cherish. But as stated elsewhere, high-ISO was nowhere near what we could find even slightly acceptable today. Even though I truly stand in awe of what my current KP is capable of, it still feels less good than my K20D did - or maybe I'm idealizing the K20D too much in hindsight. I replaced it with a K-5 and never looked back.

Guess who was a good boy yesterday? Shot as PEF and converted with ART as I'm starting to take to this new addition on the open-source raw converter stage. (In a straight shootout, the ART conversion trumped both RT itself as well as DT)
