I can add a comment on this topic too. I managed to capsize my kayak while out photographing birds on a lovely, quiet afternoon. I had never accidently capsized before and often went out with a camera. This time it was my K5 and .a 50-200mm lens. The camera was underwater for several minutes and I admit to some concern as I got to shore. However, I returned to our campsite, patted everything dry, took out the memory card and battery and left everything as open as possible to dry completely. It took some will power but I waited until the next day to try it out. It was fine. I haven't been disappointed with my decision to buy Pentax.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I tried a different memory card as recommended without success. Then I noticed that the top dial had moved - and instead of being set on Manual it had shifted two settings (past B to whatever that is after it!. I'm really not very technical I'm afraid.) I have no idea how the top dial got moved - but I recall it happened once before, but a long time ago so my aging memory didn't remember it in time to check it.
So between returning the camera to Manual and reformatting the memory cards the problem seems to be fixed. Well - apart from losing my images from this morning and possibly gaining a couple more grey hairs.
Sometimes I wonder how I learned new things, and fixed problems before computers came along and gave me access to wiser people like you guys.

This morning I was out with my K20 taking photos in a local orchard. Everything was going well and I was looking forward to seeing them on my computer. I took a shot of a nest - looked at the screen to check it for exposure etc and saw a message. 'Cannot display this image' (or words to that effect). At that point I realised that all my lovely images were GONE!
The camera still won't take and retain a shot. The images I KNOW I had on the memory card don't seem to exist anymore.
Anyone got a clue about what is going on? Any ideas of ways to fix it? Currently it will take a photo and the back screen says Delete - the photo disappears into Never Never Land or somewhere and the message becomes 'Cannot display this image'. Very aggravating and disappointing.

As I'm getting a new computer I bit the bullet and bought an external hard drive to back up my Elements catalogues. I have a catalogue for each year.
I read the instructions and thought I understood. However what arrived on the external hard drive is my images, no tags and no version sets.
Is it possible to save that information too? If so HOW? HELP!

We drive about three hours to the closest store dealing with Pentax and are well served by them - Don's Photo in Saskatoon. We've bought four Pentax DSLR cameras and seven lenses, plus tripods, filters, an external flash and various 'other bits' over the years. Sometimes we get to show the salesperson why we think our cameras are superior to the Canikons in similar price ranges and .sometimes they agree with us.

Thank you Barondla. I really enjoy my Lensbaby and bag of bits. Unfortunately I haven't been able to use it much all summer (or any other lens) because of a damaged wrist that has been casted, uncasted, recasted....what a bore!

Took the camera out to try to find some 'end of the growing season' shots.
The wheat was taken with a K20 using the double glass+wide angle optic.
The fall leaves was using the double glass+a close-up filter.

One also tends to hear every bang and crash as the gear tumbles in exquisitely slow motion!

This was such helpful info - thanks to everyone who chimed in. Having a few clues helped me gain the confidence to at least try to use the tools available.

Actually I have two of these but............I have no idea how to use them If anyone is willing to share info with a 'non-technical' person I'd be grateful.
How do you get started with this type of storage?
When do you have it on and when not?
Does it have to be 'told' what to do or does it just 'happen' because of the computer's programmes?
Do you just have your photo files on it or do you also need to store PS Elements catalogues?
What do I really need to know so I don't get things in a muddle?

I'm not sure whether this is the best spot for my question, hopefully someone will move it if that is what needs to happen.
During an extended camping it seemed to make sense to 'empty' my memory cards onto hubby's laptop. When we got home he burned the images to three cd's.
Could someone please explain to this 'computer idiot' how I get them onto my computer?
I managed to do 'something' that gave me thumbnail views in Elements, but trying to work with them was painfully slow and the computer kept sayng the programme was unresponsive. At that point I realised that I couldn't find the originals on the hard drive, I deleted the thumnails and originals and tried again. The computer said it couldn't complete the task because the cd was Read Only.
Hubby suggested that I was probably only one click away from success but not to look his way for help!

Thank you for the responses, you are very kind.
Yes, it is a northern hawk owl but I wish he was a bit sharper - next time maybe?
I really wasn't sure about the shot of the snowdrifts and the 'whatever it is' - the weed? woody plant? At first I thought it was a bit boring - basically just some white snow and a plant. The hollow intrigued me though, especially when coupled with that bit of sunlight that got caught on the face of a drift. It wasn't really a planned shot - just something that I pointed my camera at. To be honest, most of my photography is unplanned, except for planning where to go to look for photos!
I love my Pentax gear!

Lovely capture of a grey jay. I love the contrast between the snow and the strong blue sky.
I think I've driven past Ilford. Many years ago we were headed from Saskatoon to The Pas for the sled dog races and I seem to remember spotting a road sign saying Ilford. I recall being surprised as I was a recent immigrant from England and Ilford was near my home!

Several local people have spotted a Great Grey Owl recently so a friend and I went out today to see if we could get some shots. Diligent looking did us no good whatsoever, but on the way home we got to point our cameras at a different owl. Not a brilliant capture - he was quite high and quite a distance away - but I was very happy to see a bird that wasn't a raven or a magpie!
I also got several snow shots one of which I've attached.

Nice images Rupert. I confess that I feel so sorry for you because you have limited your opportunities to enjoy spending time with little ones. A day playing and learning is just so much fun - but the diapers will need changing at some point. It isn't rocket science but it is an important part of family relationships.

We got another three inches of that white fluffy stuff today. I tried to get some shots through the windows but they may have worked better if the windows were cleaner.

Thank you for posting such an interesting series. I found nothing offensive about them. I have taken similar shots at an open market in England - plenty of fish, meat and offal just sitting there waiting for a buyer. Butchers with bloody aprons serving customers (and though I didn't check I expect money was taken and change made before going back to handling meat). We saw rabbits and wild game hanging as well as pigeons. My Canadaian raised adult kid was amazed and wondered whether there were any food safety laws in place? .
When I was a kid that same open market was where my food came from.
