If SDM fails once... how likely to happen again?

Sorry haven't been around in a while. First, thanks for all the advice. I sent the lens to Precision camera. I finally got ahold of someone to pay for the lens. I seriously, had to let the phone ring for close to 6 minutes. I'm hoping to have no more issues once I get it back (Obviously) But am going to look into that Sigma 50-150. Especially after reading the comments regarding how fast they do repairs and that they have head quarters in NY.

I was told when I paid that the lens would be repaired and on it's way back to me in 7 - 10 days. I sure hope that is an accurate estimate. I really miss this lens. I'll post when I get it back.

Why do people like manual focus lenses?

I didnt' read all the other responses, but I wanted to add, the reason why I like manual focus, is because I can usually find them at auctions and/or yard sales dirt cheap! (My H is an auctioneer, and often finds cameras and lenses) anyway, years ago I got a 70 mm manual focus lens for a STEAL and it's amazing on my K5. Tack sharp. So for me it's the price that I spend on them. But then again, I'm kinda cheap ;)

Australia sounds good Mate ;) (The only place in the world, besides Alaska, I'd actually like to visit)

I was considering getting a Tamron 70 - 200 f 2.8 lens to replace the 50 - 135. Not sure anyone would want to buy it used though if the motor has already failed on it once. I'd love the extra range, especially when shooting sports. Heard good things about the Canon version, but may see about renting it once for my camera just to see if it's worth it to switch.

I need to read up more on converting to Non SDM, although it is a bit late now. I'm really clueless on what that means. Is it still AF then?

My quote is for $306. However, I'm trying to get in touch with them via telephone to pay for the repair and the phone just rings and rings and rings. It's making me mad! I sent my lens in way back in August. I've missed most all of H.S. football season and I want it back!

I have my 50-135 lens in for repair. The dreaded SDM failure that seems to be quite common. so my question is, how likely is it that it will fail again once it is repaired? It's not cheap to repair it! I'm hoping it's just once and done!

Beginning signs of SDM failure in 50-135???

Last fall I had my 50 mm lens quit focusing on me. While it was in for repair, I started relying more and more on my 50 - 135 and fell in love with the lens again. used it for all of my Fall High School Senior photo sessions and it really Wowed me! So the other day I had it out and noticed it took a bit of a "warming up period" before it would focus at all. After trying for a minute or two it would finally catch focus and once again took amazingly sharp photos. I'm wondering if this is the beginning signs of the SDM failing? And if so, should I send it to repair now? or do you have to wait until it totally dies to send it in?

I agree with this... all of it. Go to manual mode, you will never look back!! A great book to read is Understand Exposure by Bryan Peterson. It's a great resource! I don't remember if he gets into flash photography at all or not. but it's a great start.

I agree also with don't be afraid to hike up that ISO. I've shot many church wedding ceremony photos at iso 6400 that were more than useable. It's always better to expose properly even if it means a very high ISo than it is to underexpose to avoid hiking up the ISO and then trying to fix in post processing in my opinion.

It tries to focus, it makes a noise kind of like a grunt. sorry, I can't think of any other way to describe it. It will not manual focus either. The focus ring does move smoothly, Contacts seem clean and free of particles. I will have to look into focus trapping and try that. I'm not familiar...I'll look it up. Thanks for the reply

replace or repair FA 50 mm 1/4??

Last weekend my FA 50 1.4 quit focusing :( It was odd, I had used it the day before and it was fine, took it out the next day, wouldn't focus. Put it on a different body, nothing. It's my go to lens right now during my busy season doing family and Senior portraits (I'm learning to love my 50 - 135 while my 50 is down) But I'm curious if it's worth fixing. I have an e mail in to CRIS and Eric from the pentax repair site but when I put in for a quote from CRIS I got a message saying that some of the parts for this lens may not be available. I'm curious if anyone has had any experience with having a 50 1/4 fixed? Is it possible? Or should I just buy a new one, since they are only $399?

I am anxious to hear back from both sites regarding this, but wanted to ask here hoping someone will say they've had one repaired recently no problem!

I think I can make it through my busy time with what I have and then replace the 50 in the Spring before next busy season starts. I'd rather not spend the $ right now right before the Holidays. But I feel lost without it!

I didn't read all the responses (In a bit of a hurry this a.m. but I will read later on, I'm curious to hear what everyone suggests) But I wanted to tell you what I do when I have to crop an image but still want to print it big. I'm not sure if this is helpful.

I go to Photo Printing, Photo Cards, Holiday Cards, Announcements, Photo Books : Mpix and upload the photo. When I click on the picture, it shows on the right side, how big you can go. I normally don't order my portrait work from mpix, but do this occasionally just to make sure when I crop if a client wants a big print.

I had to crop in a good bit on a family photo a few years ago because the Mom didn't want their feet in the picture. However the Mom wanted a huge print made, so this worked well for me to see just how big I could go.

I hope that helps. I'm anxious to read the other responses

I want to order a set of Cactus V5 Transmitters/receivers for now to use with my Alien Bee Strobe, but I am not sure if the cords that come with the Cactus will work for going from the receiver to the AB. Does anyone know? Or know what the cord would be called so I can order one along with?

edited to add... I think this is what I need http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/682563-REG/Impact_10032280_Sync_Cord_Male_Mini.html But it's un clear if that is included when you buy a set of transmitter/receivers

Maybe just try to move it more at a 45 degree angle or maybe a bit further... to your subject, then see how that looks, move it slightly until you get the look you want.

Using off camera flash

Where was your OCF? and were you triggering it with the on camera flash? When I used my on camera to fire my OCF, I always thought mine looked flat too. and I can see a flash in her sunglasses that looks like the on camera flash, so I'm thinking that may be why. However, I don't think these look too flat, I can tell that the OCF was camera right, I see the Camera left side of her face is in slightly more shadow than the right, the shadow from her vest on the camera left etc... So I really don't think this looks bad.

By the way... I'm in PA too, Lancaster County to be exact... where are you?

Ah! I thought I had it narrowed down! LOL I think it's one of those deals where I'm on information overload and I'm just confused! So, sell it to me. Tell me why you'd go that way... In the mean time, I'm going to look at the review section here and see what is posted about them.

Thanks!! I do appreciate the suggestions and comments everyone!

Does the vivitar stay on? Or does it turn off after not being fired for a certain amount of time? (I'm trying to find the manual online, but figured I'd ask)

Also the 433d' s I found online says it is for Nikon. Is there one specifically for Pentax? Or will this Nikon one work?

Thank you for the reply. I was also curious about the beep on the Vivitar that I read about. I read it beeps when it is ready to fire and continues to beep until it is. I'm curious how loud it is and if it would be heard if up on a light pole a bit away from the action at a wedding reception. any input on that?
