Astrophotography + SMC Pentax-FA* 24mm F2 AL [IF]

Some of the Samyangs seem interesting for this purpose, I've read varied things about the 24mm f1.4

The Irix 15mm Firefly/Blackstone f2.4 I think looks a very interesting lens

31 is a jewel but it might exhibit more CA than some of these more modern lenses though - though its a jewel you shouldn't be without [if needs can make this a realisation] if you know what I mean ;)

Thoughts on the 60-250mm for the K-1?

That's awesome, the quality speaks for itself. Might have to investigate the baffle mod if I ever get one (prices currently quite high on the 60-250 and seem scarce 2nd hand - might be a waiting game).

Yes that is looking a very good combo. I have the 28-105 and it is impressive. I tend not to shoot much wider than 30ish. Do you find you are ever short at the long end though? (I guess a TC and switch to crop mod could take care of that though!)

The 60-250mm seems the obvious lens for zoom to go with the K-1 to me.

How do 60-250 owners get along, do you find the 250 enough at the long end? Has a 300mm prime reduced your 60-250 usage?

Rear converter 1.4x on 55-300 PLM

The PLM does seem an upgrade over the non-HD metal mount 55-300 I used to have (in pretty much every way).

I would possibly go as far as to say the 55-300 PLM might even be the best value lens Pentax has right now. Its pretty darn good, its only weakness is the slow aperture. A great travel lens, especially if most of the time you will have good light.

awesome pictures there

I note the 15mm irix is also significantly lighter than the Pentax 15-30 (something like 600g vs 1kg)

Is There a Place For DA*55mm f1.4?

Its a great lens, but I find it a bit of a wierd FL on crop, think I prefer wider or narrower. Don't be deterred though.

Also consider the DA* 50-135mm (which is WR)... insanely good lens for a zoom

A K-3ii with K-5iis DR levels would be awesome.

Perhaps it'll happen one day :D

Its also worth considering being a heretic - the 28-105 will do a good job on crop or FF

This is why the 55-300 PLM is awesome.

The new 28-105 seems very capable too and not big for FF glass.

Pentax 31mm f1.8 vs 77mm f1.8

Not much between them

I prefer the FL of 31

There's perhaps a marginal extra sprinkling of magic in the 77 shots (in terms of rendering) IMO - this is a subjective thing though... let your eyes be the judge

If you need these approximate focal lengths... there can be no compromise - you need these :D *

---------

EDIT: Then rampant LBA should perhaps continue with the DA* 300 another insanely good lens..
and if crop lens size doesn't bother you add a 50-135 in there
and also the....

Irix 15mm for astro/night?

Also considering Sigma 18-35 despite looking at it ages ago and knowing of some flaws or not so good points (from this forum), AF, bokeh... but these are things that wont matter so much for this purpose.

Obvious its a crop lens not a FF lens and a pretty big one at that!

I currently have the K-3ii and its ideal for me. The thing I miss is probably DR more on a level with the K-5iis sensor. Though I could probably budget for a K-1/FF, I think I'd struggle to justify it* - despite having some FF capable glass already.

Though LBA/CBA voices may one day say otherwise.

Thing which puts me off the 15-30 is its sheer size/weight*, its IQ does look good though

(*for a lens I'd mostly be using a the 15 end as well)

On paper looks like it might be a decent lens for night sky.

Would be interested to hear about it on either recent crop K-5x/K-3x or K-1... I don't own a K-1 at the moment, this wouldn't deter me from getting it though.

Have read the thread on decentered copies...

GR / GR ii - rough idea of shutter count/longevity?

Just wondered if anyone knew the shutter count/lifetime for a GR / GR ii? or a reasonable guestimate as to how long one might last.

Can we have a ricoh/pentax model similar to the lx100?

yes ive been trying to hold out...

as its a great camera but you also wonder if Panasonic will refresh it.. or if someone else will make something similar

mind you there doesn't look to be much scope for improvement (if it is to stay the same size - which is a key attraction) .. other than making it WR and having a different sensor - sensor is already pretty good though

Can we have a ricoh/pentax model similar to the lx100? :p

Something with similar specs would be very nice IMO.

What would be different from the Panasonic lx100?

-WR :D
-Pentax ergonomics menus
-Pentax/Sony sensor if they can cram one in

What would be the same/similar

-be great to be close in physical size
-zoom like lx100 or mx-1 .. not fixed like GR

Pentax mx-1 was some of these things, but smaller sensor than lx100. lx100 has bigger sensor, better dr, speed/buffer.

K-3ii is very capable.

The K-1 would be nice for its bigger sensor (light gathering) and dynamic range.

It'll be interesting to see if the K-3ii successor (APS-C) has improved DR. I think the both the K-5iis and K-1 are better than the K-3ii for DR.

lens pouches

Last two lenses I bought new were the:

55-300mm DA PLM
28-105mm DFA

Neither came with a pouch.

Not the end of the earth, but I find them useful.

Just thought I'd mention :D

---------------------

Pretty sure the DA 55-300mm metal mount (non-HD, non-WR) used to come with a soft case.

I think both of the above would need a S80-120 soft case which judging by current prices is not that cheap... 30 or $50 USD.

Does anyone have a recommendation for other lens pouches?

Don't compromise on this next lens - save for it if necessary... you have top glass and it should also be high quality and slot in

----

FA 35 or FA 31 to give you something at around 30 with high IQ and FF compatibility should you ever need it

DA 35 macro is great but you already have macro with the 100 .. the FA 35 and 31 give you a slightly different rendering... though the 35 macro is also obviously decent in this regard

otherwise perhaps the 20-40 which will provide WR
