I do shoot film almost always B&W, although not lately. Not a bad idea either. I have a Pentax 35mm body, several 6x6, 6x7, and several 645's so it's not too hard to pull out one of them and shoot. I can develop at home too, just got out of practice. Thanks.

Been off the SIC for awhile now. Given that I began back in 2011 and participated quite a bit then over the years, stopped, started again, etc. I got to a point (actually the same point several times) where, I realized that I was just taking pictures to take pictures. Really not creative at all, just drudgery. So, I stopped with the challenges. Actually, going into our COVID shutdown here in March 2020 (remember that?), I stopped doing a lot of things and over the time since, I find it really hard to get interested in photography again. I've done some shoots, but I haven't even processed the bulk of those images. Just can't motivate myself and considering the amount of Pentax gear I own (and love), I'm looking a downsizing at some point, but...I have also been thinking that I need to jump back in on the SIC's (or perhaps the Daily challenge), just to have at least one photographic purpose again.

The point here is that the OP is, as I recall, one heck of a good photographer and I always enjoyed viewing his work. But I wonder if, as I have, hit a point where I've shot so much locally that I only get interested when I'm exploring somewhere new. Or has he, as I have, burned out on this hobby? Don't know, but I feel your pain. :(

Well, as it's been more than a year since I got my gear out, it took me awhile to remember how to make things talk to each other. I have the Cactus RF60X flash with the latest firmware A.08 and a Cactus V6II with the latest firmware PEN.A.005. Had to check but I remember updating all my devices firmware in 2000 when I bought the setup. Bottom line here is that it works just fine on both my K-1II and 645z. I haven't done test with my 540FGZII as that's another recall of forgotten memory issue for me. I kinda recall that the 540 + Cactus was a bit touchy, but again I'm relying on memory here. Anyway, that's what I've seen here. Not going to worry about the 540 / Cactus combo though. YMMV

Yes, this happened to me on Safari in 2017. Cost about $1,000 for the repair and it had to be sent to Japan for the fix. Mine just completely separated in half at smallest tube when fully extended. This and other similar issues are discussed in threads on the site. I don't feel that I abused my lens. Ok, bouncing around on the Serengeti in a land rover is kind rough but I do take care of my equipment. The only thing I can think of was that I was tending to rack in / out quickly many times on that trip. This may have been the cause of the separation. It was ugly by the way as I started with one lens and ended up with two halves and a bunch of wires dangling between them...

Best of luck on your fix though.

Well others may be able to answer quicker as I can't pull mine out and test it but I have a Z and Cactus triggers + flash. I can test it later today, but I have every reason to expect it to function just as well on the Z as it would on other Pentax bodies. I don't recall any camera model specific setting just brand.

Anyone else?

Lens recommendations for Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks

You might want to have a look at my flickr album from my 2011 trip to Utah (A lot of Bryce and some of Zion). Can't remember what my lens choices were but given that I was shooting with my then new K-5 and I did have a fair number of lenses with me, my exif data might give you some ideas. Both places by the way, are favorites of mine. Enjoy the trip.

I use my most of the time as I geocode almost all of my images. I have the O-GPS1 as well for my z and K3 but I really like the built in GPS in my K-1.

Ideal Day-Hiking 645z Kit

Good call on your z hiking kit. I don't hike much with my z and I usually feel I need more lenses than are comfortable to carry. The 55 IMHO never gets enough love and I have to say that the 200 is a light and very useful lens. Recently I've added the 45-85 to my gear and have been very impressed in the niche that it fills. Regardless, your post gets me thinking that I could live with just the 55 and 200 but I'd want something wider and the FA 645 35mm would fill that bill. I'll have to give it a try the next hike. Thanks for the thoughts here.

Only 6? 645z, K-1II, K-3, K-5, K20d, K100DS, 645, 645n, 6x7, WG-6, hmmm... I know there's more but can't remember right now. So, you have GAS (gear acquisition syndrome). So do we all.

What's your favorite wide-angle prime lens for a K-1?

I'd echo the above. The Laowa is a very good lens (they could make the lens cap fit a bit tighter though..lost one over a deep canyon...shown below] and for landscapes it's almost too wide, but for the size and weight, I be hard pressed to find one better.

Renting Lens from Online question

Yes, lensrentals is a good biz. I've always had good experiences with them. I will say that if you do rent, read the terms of the rental, particularly about returning the rented.

I haven't looked at them lately but I have also rented a lens from them and then bought that lens from them for a somewhat better price than getting a brand new one.

I use them - good ones too - but with a purpose. I've stopped using them on wider angle lenses (>24mm) as they will partially darken a blue sky. Again, use with a purpose.

28-45mm opinions

We are talking about 645 lenses right?

I own the 28-45, I also own the 35 and an A 45 as well. I wish, wish, wish, I owned the 25 too as there is a significant gap between 25mm and 28mm IMHO. That said, since getting the 28-45, I haven't found any use for the A45, and although I usually carry the 35, I have to force myself to use it as the 28-45 just does so much good stuff. For me, for my landscape work, the 28-45 even with all of it's weight, is indispensable. Can't talk you out of it, but would rather talk you into it. Even with the 28-45, you my rue the day you let that 25 go...

This exactly the same thing happened about two years ago on my Q7. Sent it in to get repaired (Precision) and was told it's too old to repair. I'm afraid it's a goner. Sorry.

Thanks for posting that video. Rambling as it was, as is pointed out above there are some interesting points made. First off who is this dude? Just wondering what kind of authority he is.

To keep this comment short, I'll just say modern or classic fine, call it whatever you wish, it (the Pentax system) just works well for me. Oh, and I don't really give a whoot about video. Nice to have but I use it well less than 1% of the year.

Ricoh WG-7

Given that I have a Pentax Optio W80, voted the worst camera of 2009...which I used for many years sea kayaking. When I upgraded last year to the WG-6, I felt like I stepped in to a new generation of water proof cameras. Big technology jump for sure. Skimming the previous comments, I can't imagine adding much more to the WG-6 than, clearly shooting in RAW, and a few menu changes, but who knows what will be added or not? Considering that my old W80 had terrible low light performance as was noticed in reviews than and by me as well, jumping 10 years forward is naturally a great improvement. Watching the evolution of the Pentax/Ricoh water proof cameras over the past 11 years, they just seem to keep adding stuff as they go along.

I think Serkevan has it correct, the entire point is weatherproofing. I just returned from a 5 day camping / kayaking trip to a lake in the mountains. I took my K-1II+several lenses for hiking, and the WG-6 for paddling. Quite happy with that combo and if a WG-7 had been available last year, I'd be using it instead.
