Focal length doesn't affect subject compression - demonstrated

I would stress that these images depend on the fact that the F-number was fixed, while the aperture (size) was changed massively along the focal lengths.

---------- Post added 4th Dec 2020 at 18:00 ----------

Given a constant aperture size and same subject framing the longer FL actually gives you linearly more/deeper DoF at the exact same distant background blur/separation. :)

DPReview owned by Amazon?

+1

It is a commercial site built to make money off the users.
In order to do this they have to work by 100% click baiting.

That works by
a) writing opinion pieces shallowly disguised as "reviews" which the current mainstream wants to read and supports their confirmation bias
b) being not critical versus mainstream to avoid pissing them off
c) generating heated, click-intensive discussions where the heat is directed at non-mainstream groups
d) being nice to the companies providing income by adverts
e) generating income by generous amounts of blog posts about "what to buy"

Do not mistake this tabloid approach to something related to "journalism" or professional/balanced "reviews". It is not.

Go count the number of blog posts about "build your skills" or "gear is not important" or "why you do *not* need to upgrade to the ten last monthly camera minor upgrade models".

If they were even a little bit independent from Amazon then a 50% volume of "no need to buy this toy" blog posts would happen and would be no harm.

But it is 100% BUY! BUY! BUY! - at Amazon.

No need for screenshots. All images can be downloaded directly by standard browser features. Its just 4 or 5 clicks instead of 2.

Obviously any content which your browser downloads anyway to display is easy to save as a file.

But I agree with Rondec that the most efficiency have any means which make all this a little effort. People are lazy.
It is not a unique 50 million painting we talk about, which would be worth substantial effort.

That's not their only "ouch".

Basically they are falling like a rock and reacting with measures from an accountant.

People do not want to buy Nikon and their current management thinks it's smart to mainly cut costs (which they need to, but that certainly will not be anywhere near a solution). Look at their slides and tell me where they explain why someone should buy Nikon instead of any other product.

"I buy Nikon, because they just fired 2,000 staff." ????

Compared to that ignorance even the most esoteric videos from Ricoh seem like coming from geniusses.

Mirrorless camera and long focal lengths for 4K video

  1. All current hybrid cameras "get rolling shutter", because they have not global shutter electronics like old CCD sensors had.

  2. The column the XT3 is listed in is simply because the XT3 only has a "APS"(C) = "Super35" format sensor, while the listed FF cameras have the choice of FF or APS framing

  3. You want the smallest numbers you can get in that table, since a camera with 25 ms rolling shutter versus one with 20 ms is -25% slower and that much more likely to show deformed images of fast moving subjects.

A newer R5 has a rolling shutter value of 10 ms in 4k24-60p, 8 ms in 4k120p.

"Brand value" expresses the value of the abstract brand. It has nothing to do with sales, employees or any other similar hard fact item.
It is about the intangible value of the brand name recognition. Usually this is put as goodwill asset on balance sheets.

You can be the worlds largest producer of weapons for murderers with billions of sales and millions of employees, but still your brand value will likely be zero or negative.
Or you can be a non-profit organization of five people and still have a huge brand value.

It is basically the monetary value of how many people recognize who the brand is and how positive the image is.

I would interpret the breaks as places for actual AF points, so the extreme left and right ones are sitting quite a bit higher/lower than your sketch, as they are breaking the horizontal 1/3 lines. Same height as the central area ones.

For the employees certainly. But they get problems with any change of market share and following firings. That is not restricted to closing shop.

If Pentax would close down I would be sad, but certainly not a person requiring sympathy from other people. The current real world offers a lot more important things which let me feel sympathy for other humans (and can not be discussed here ;)) .

No. That all balances out.

In the case of a static market size the 3rd parties just switch over to support the others.

I like reciprocal relationships. On the day a company shows me real individual case tailored emotions when I stop buying their products I will show emotions if if closes shop.
That might be the case for a small business where I know the owner and he provides excellent service and remembers my name by heart. That business closing will touch me.
That will not be the case for any companies with internet contact forms and call centers. They cold, me cold. :)

The app has to be stable and reliable, which is amodern issue with all the smartphones havingdifferent power management interfering with background activity. You want to be able to stow away the phone and to use other apps on top of the gps app without interferences.

The timing has a simple solution. Just do the bluetooth connect once for a minute on the beginning of a two week trip and the camera clock will be perfect as it will sync with gps.

Sadly it never came close to becoming a standard. That is why they all think it's so easy to get rid of it.
We need to get used to the idea of living with external solutions.

I personally think it is less pain to generate a track on a smartphone with a free app and then once sync the images with it compared to constantly worrying about bluetooth sync being there when you need it. I like collecting tracks anyhow.

The recent number for Nikon are out.

Nikon is booking a loss of -$1000 on each sale of $3000 for cameras this year.
https://www.nikon.com/about/ir/ir_library/result/pdf/2021/21second_all_e.pdf

That is utterly abysmal.
After already firing 4,000 employees in the last 4 years. The next 1,000-1,500 employees they intend to fire in the next 12 months are all non-Japanese, e.g. likely service and sales.

And then this:

Nikon Malaysia to cease operations
Nikon Malaysia to cease operations - The Malaysian Reserve

QuoteQuote:

Nikon's real problem has been and continues to be the low end. DL, KeyMission, Nikon 1, and virtually all Coolpix completely disintegrated, and DX DSLRs are currently doing the same thing. Nikon has virtually nothing to say in the US$500-1300 price range now. The Z50 is a nice camera, but it won't generate the traction Nikon needs in the low end, particularly given that Nikon is once again neglecting DX lenses (buzz, buzz). Nikon is currently not competitive with Canon, Fujifilm, or Sony in APS-C mirrorless. One camera and two lenses don't give you any traction.

New Camera and Photography Articles, Nikon DSLR camera and lens

bye, bye Nikon.

Actually I disagree. If the marketing freaks from any company choose to name their product "flagship" or "the best camera since sliced bread" I'd rather not use that. Especially when it comes from marketing. :D ;)

If we then do better and call it "action-oriented" it is much easier to discuss what such a camera should have as features. Which suddenly would also shine some light on flippy screens (which is mostly - not all - favored by macro and astro shooters). At least we had some more clear understanding of the flying offroad truck racing car with low carbon footprint. :)

The use of a term like "flagship" really is for small kids only, as it has no meaning at all beyond a single brain, simply because photography is a large field and requirements are very different with the makers offering solutions for all the requirements but never in one box.

If I own a Porsche 911, a mega expensive super offroad car, a large 40 ton truck and one car which can also fly: Which one of these is the "flagship"?

Adapting Nikon lenses: slowdown problem on Z mirrorless

Hm. If a new body improves it then it would imply the issue is slow calculations in the body.
Since DSLRs bodies do not have the issue, it would imply the DSLRs bodies have more powerful chips than Z bodies, which I think is very unlikely.

Adapting Nikon lenses: slowdown problem on Z mirrorless

I was quite surprised to see how much Nikon Z cameras slow down their own lenses when being adapted (see at 14:49):
Nikon Mirrorless: Tips For Performance And Action (Z6, Z7, Z50) - YouTube

Roundabout 100% more slow on Nikon Z versus DSLR.

That definitely is not the case on Canon's own mirrorless cameras.

And I absolutely wonder why it happens. Nikon should know everything about all the hardware involved and it's still allegedly PDAF at work.

So why this poor performance of their own lenses?

I did not advocate using the worst possible setup. I just said that 90% of the discussion here are unrealistic and esoteric and mostly overstated by people who have no grasp of the concepts themselves.

#1: Windows is able to offer some basic calibration without anything else required other than the hardware screen adjustments. That can improve this already quite a lot.

#2: as PCs nowadays all offer HDMI output to TVs any middle class TV is fine as computer screen and can be calibrated pretty nicely with a Spyder or similar. No need special computer screens at all.

---------- Post added 1st Nov 2020 at 11:40 ----------

Relative to the appeasement policy versus poor Sony and Nikon products Canon did receive some pitchforking - just not on the ridiculous level of Pentax hate.

Look at the tabloid's A7C advertising:

When talking about a 2,100 EUR FF camera with the worst viewfinder in the industry for current models (worse than a 2007 APSC K10D).
Go wait for the day that they find some feature in a Pentax camera which is significantly worse than 2007 level in a much cheaper camera and then call it "adequate but not amazing".
