DA 50-200mm Won't Focus Infinity

The photos were take with matrix focusing, 11 point, not center. Using center is s good idea. I am guessing with the trees and the mountains at different distances, the matrix didn't know which to focus on.

As for exifs, if when looking at the pic in Flickr, you go to Actions>view exif info, you'll see it. Although it does not state focussing method or any lens info, i am guessing because that comes from the lens, not the camera and image file.

Example 1, Manual focus, lenses/camera would NOT focus on mountains.

Example 2, Auto focus, lens/camera WOULD focus, I guess because of the horizontal vs landscape layout.

EXIF data with photos.

Now putting these here, I rather like them. Which one do you all like best, and how would you improve them. I did 0 post-processing, straight export from RAWs in Aperture. The landscape mode has nice lines in it and depth, I think. The vertical one seems shortened and flat.

These are the mountains one sees west of Hoosier Pass, a few miles above Breckenridge, Colorado, USA.

I recently purchased a Pentax DA 50-200mm lens from B&H and it seems to have difficulty focussing to infinity with K-5 body. Like if I point it at the moon or a distant mountain, it won't auto focus. Fine if I use manual, but ...

Anyone else experienced this? Fixes?

Turn AF Off on Shutter Release?

Thanks everyone, I found it where you said. Holding the AF button to stop the shutter release from activating is right on. My only complaint about using the AF button is that when looking through the viewfiner, my thumb on the AF button gets in the way of my face and makes it hard to look throughout he viewfinder,

Does anyone know if you can, and how, to turn the AF off of the shutter release so one uses only the AF button on the back?

That way you can focus, and then the focus will stay where it is when you push shutter release. Good if something come into the frame as your shooting and the camera doesn't refocus.

why not just move the camera? i can't imagine that you could use the Comp Adjust to change the composition significantly enough to notice. we're talking millimeters here, right?

I purchased a K-5 about a month ago, and feel pretty competent with all its features at this point, except Composition Adjustment, even after reading the manual.

Can someone please explain exactly what it is, and how and when one would use it?

DA 55-300mm in WR Version?

so what would you all consider their best zoom lens (I've got a K-5), or even other manufacturers, for sports and wildlife? I'd love a weather resistant lens, but I'd rather have higher build and image quality. (assuming I can afford it).

Lenses in Addition to the Kit 18-55mm

I bought a Pentax K-5 with the kit lens, and am considering which 2-3 lenses to add to my quiver next. I am an advanced amateur and the types of photography I most enjoy and practice, in no particular order, are: kids sports (inside and outside), portraits/family photos, low light/night photography, street photography, landscapes and closeups/macro. I know, that's pretty much everything, but I really do enjoy it all. These lenses seem to be good choices, but what else should I consider?

  1. Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED

  2. SMC Pentax-M 50mm F1.7 (macro with 2x or 3x Adapter)

  3. SMC Pentax-DA Limited pancake lenses 15 or 21 mm for wide angle and 35 or 40 mm for portraits/street photography

I am open to older, discontinued lenses and other manufacturers.

Thanks, Toby

Hello fellow Pentax users,

I am 49, wife and 3 kids, full-time job as a geologist for an engineering and environmental consulting firm. I live in Steamboat Springs, CO where it is now cold and snowy, just how I like it. :-)

I am new here, but a long time Pentax user. I first got into photography several decades ago in high school; I was given a Pentax K1000 with a 50 mm prime lens and soon after became the high school photographer, black and white darkroom, then onto color Kodachrome. Fast forward a few decades, add a few kids, and got into P&S with a Pentax Optio W10, which I still have and still love. About a year ago I decided to get back into (D)SLR photography and purchased a Leica V-Lux 2, which is actually considered a ZSLR - fixed lens, 28-600 mm F2.8 - excellent camera for what it is, but not a great sensor, and no ability to change lenses.

So yesterday I took the plunge and upgraded to a Pentax K-5 with the 18-55 mm kit lens. Woohoo! I wish I'd kept my 50 mm prime and a zoom I used to have. Any tips or suggestions on using this camera and lens?

Now the next step, after I take a ton of photos, is to get a prime lens (35 mm f2.4?), and a telephoto zoom (50-300 mm?). Any suggestions?

I will be here often, and look forward to discussing photography with all of you.

Ciao, Toby
