How common is the aperture block failure, really?

I've totally struck out! Suplemented my trusty K-x (Still works, NEVER aperture solonoid issue!!) with a new K-30, which failed TWICE w/n 3 years: 1st repair under warranty, 2nd, shop discounted me on a new K-50. It ALSO failed TWICE w/n 3 years: first under (paid extra for - extended) warranty, 2nd out of MY pocket recently (THIS time, I got me one of the "WHITE" - "good" solonoids off eBay for them to repair it with). Praying this time it will live a normal lifespan and die for some OTHER reason. As far as I can tell, if you have a GREEN solonoid, it WILL fail (ymmv)!

About Lens Hoods IMPORTANT!

One little trick I've discovered on my FA501.4 is taking the rubber expanding hood that I bought for it and then screwing the tiny little metal hood that comes w/my DA40mm limited prime into the filter threads of the rubber hood (making a double-hood) works really well w/o viginetting! The inner hood is close to the front element and blocks more centralized stray light that can make it thru the larger outer one, whereas the outer one blocks more pherphral light. It also allows me to collapse the rubber hood and pocket the lens w/o the cap.

Sticky: Dark exposure problems on K-30 or K-50? Discussion Thread

I must be the UNLUCKIEST photog on the planet: I bought a K-30 a few years ago. After a year or so, I started getting the dreaded "first image dark" crap, took it to repair shop, cleaned, worked again (for a/b 3 weeks), started up again, took it back, cleaned & checked "more throughly this time", same result. Read a/b this pbm, credit-card ext. 2nd yr warrantee reembursed me, shop sold me discounted new K-50 (w/FREE EXTENDED WARRANTEE!!!). Now, 21 months later, my K-50's doin' the SAME FRACKIN' THING! Gonna call shop tomorrow. GRRRRRRRR!!!!11111 At least THIS time, I KNOW what the pbm is and will insist they REPLACE the Aperture block. I guess Ricoh won't step up and fix all these 'cause it'd pbly bankrupt 'em. At least I was savy enough to get the ext. warrantee (as I knew the credit card's already PAID OFF on it's warrantee for the orig. purchase).

Twice Bitten.

Want long lens, Pentax FA 200mm f2.8 or somthing else?

My LBA is nipping at me - I've got primes up to 90mm (mostly "limiteds"), but for longer shots, I only have my kit DA 55-300. I'm sorta fancying a Pentax FA 200mm f2.8. I see used ones for $700-900 and wonder if this would be a good improvement over my kit. I find myself usually using the 55-300 at between 200-240mm and f8-10 to get the best IQ and cropping if needed (usually for moonshots, tops of tall buildings, and other distant things). I hope to get better IQ at lower F-stops (and tighter DOF) w/a prime. The FA is of particular interest over the DA* due to the fact that I have both a K-50, a K-x, and a Pentax ME-Super (film), since if I'm going to spend that much $$$, it'd be nice to be able to (occasionally) use on the ME-Super as well (requires an aperture ring). Autofocus (for the digital cams) is critical as my eyes are crappy (I know my ME is manual only but has excellent viewfinder). Any thoughts, advice or suggestions? The reviews I've read all seem to say this is an excellent lens. Some I've seen have no hood, so I'm also wondering if it's possible to get a reasonably-priced properly-working hood for one if I buy/end up with one w/o a hood.

Thanks!

No apology needed! I apologize to you not realizing that English isn't your native language, I was just teasing you about what I assumed was a typo. When I said "classic English", I meant OLD (middle ages) English, like the 1600s, etc. where "my/mine" and "thy/thine" were used (like "a/an" in front of words beginning with a vowel sound). That is no longer true today, but being a frequent King James Bible reader, I couldn't miss the humor. Cheers! :D

In classic English, you only use "mine" in front of nouns that you would use "an" in front of! (See King James Bible) Just sayin'! LOL :D

In bright daylight, I usually have to use -0.3ev (better highlights, color, and bluer skies), then up the shadow correction as needed in (RAW->JPEG). If too much contrast, HDR-1 or (in rare cases HDR-2). HDR-1 usually works best as HDR-2 often produces a slightly cheezy-looking image.

K-50 vs Bridge Camera

My friend has a bridge and she gets awesome moon shots with that "telescope" zoom, blows away anything I can get w/my DSLR and 55-300 kit (I don't have any of the long primes)! One other advantage nobody mentioned with the bridge is: NEVER getting dirt on your sensor!!! :D

Worked for me, tvcrder (after 3 attempts at repairz failed) I have no doubts that most K-30s are great cameras, but this model does seem to be "prone" to this and if it develops this problem, it's probably not worth paying to fix as it seems difficult to keep fixed.

"0.7 Hours clockwise" - That's pretty precise! That would be 42 "minutes" in "Clock measurement" or 21° (which is also 1260 "minutes") in angular measurement, meaning there's 30 "minutes" of angle in every "minute" of clock time! I never thought a/b that calculation before, sorry, but your post awakened my inner nerd! :D What I find interesting these days is how many ppl. under say 25 struggle to read an analog clock, since they seem to be becoming somewhat rare now!

To answer enoeske, I've sometimes wished that Ricoh would release their software developer specs (not their actual firmware) to allow for other software developers (like myself) to create open / alternate firmwares (in my case to tweek a cpl. UI annoyances. This would cost Ricoh nothing (since one must purchase their camera). My point was to call Ricoh's, et. al. attention to the fact that hey, another DSLR company was being opensource-friendly!

Exposure problems with new K-50

I'd be curious if maybe the newer camera is programmed to try harder to capture the image more like the eye instead of brightening it up to a "neutral" brightness? What happens if shooting night / moon shots? My older K-x would have to be manually set to underexpose several stops to get a more eye-accurate image and not blow out the moon to look like the sun.

Is ISO 100 significantly better than 200?

I think the better question (which I have and has not been addressed) is what iso can be used that avoids in-camera amplification (100 or 200)? I would think that would produce the minimum noise, since it is amplification that brings out noise (assuming no shadow-correction option, etc.). I'm shooting with a K-50. If I have enough light to shoot at my desired aperture and enough shutter speed to avoid motion-blur and camera shake, such that I don't need amplification, then I'd just assume not have it!

K-30 going to shop again

UPDATE, failed again same way after 5mo. Shop fixed again, failed again after 3 DAYS, I bought a new K50. What I understand is that this is not common at all, but if your K-30 has this "aperture control" pbm, get a different camera, it's apparently hard to keep fixed, if it IS prone to this pbm, it's a "lemon".

K30 random underexposure problem

*MY* K-30 is a POS, it has failed AGAIN (STRIKE THREE) with this issue after TWO cleanings/repairs to the "aperture control system" magnets. This time after <1 week. The camera ls <2 yrs OLD. I'm really considering a K-50. The K-3 is tempting, but heavier and more expen$ive. Weight is important to me as I still miss the lightness of my K-x. Does anyone know if it's more reliable or have a better suggestion? Shame too as I love this camera and it's features, but I apparently got a Fsckin' LEMMON!

K30 random underexposure problem

My K-30 just went back to the shop, 2nd time in 5 months for this issue. Tech explained to me that it's not the aperture motor, but magnets inside that work the aperture that get "dirty" (oil+dirt) and then randomly "stick". (The symptom is that the camera mechanically stops down to a much higher aperture than selected, one can see this in the clear dust-specs on the sensor, if any, in a low f# photo, as if one had used a high f#.) He cleaned it all up 1st time & it worked fine for 5 months, said will clean extra-meticulously this time (and check everything else). Said it happens regularly with this model but I'm first one to have it happen TWICE (I have the best luck of anyone I know). All I know is that this is strike 2, if it happens again, I'm likely throwin' it against a brick wall & buyin' a new, different camera. Should I go w/a K-50, a 5 IIs or a K-3? This lemon? is <2 yrs old.

K-30 taking dark shots

I had this happen, took to a local shop in Dallas, they repaired it, don't think it took any parts - issues was aperture-control magnet or arm or something had accumulated some dirt (I use primes and switch lenses aLOT). They said it was an issue w/this model. Fortunately for $169 (i think) they fixed and cleaned the sensor in-house in < a week. My credit-card's extended warranty reembursed me! I suspect in a cpl years it'll need it again. Symptoms were as you - lens stopped down to max aperture resulting in very dark shots, particularly when 1st turning on the camera, got gradually worse.
