I have issues with my galaxy s7 when I listen to podcasts, this might help you, it stops and gets disconnected. I used to restart the phone to make it go again. Then I found a better way. The fix I learned was to press the icon button with stacked rectangles, it shows all your apps, (I use many apps and never close them) press the CLOSE ALL option, then reopen the app that fails, it works better (for me) doing that.

bjsoccermom23, you mention you use a 75-300mm lens and that you want to go to 500mm. You said the photos are grainy. You didn't say what exposure or ISO you use. The problem as you describe it is from using a very high ISO, not a problem with focus.
I'd have to think you are trying to capture motion with a high speed shutter with an wide open aperture and with available light either you or the camera sets the ISO to the highest value.
If I'm correct, you can do this simple test to verify:
In bright sunlight go outside and get the sun to your back and shoot something with the lowest ISO your camera can use with a proper exposure.
Now go indoors into a room with low light, now shoot a test shot there with the highest ISO your camera can take,
Compare the two, see a lot of grain in one and not the other? That might be the problem.

I am a person who is not spending a large part of my savings on cameras and lenses, so I hear you on the "ton of money" part.
I have a Pentax K-5, its ISO gets up to 51,200 and ISOs up to 6000 are very nice. I paid $300 for it used a few years ago. I think its a good compromise to value and cost. You might need to think about upgrading your camera to just a couple grades up but still inexpensive.

Mirrorless cameras to me were very interesting to hear about at first. When I saw some youtubes about the new Sony mirrorless and how the flange was so close to the sensor that you can put any lens on it with an adapter and have no issues, that was interesting. I was so glad to see Sony come out and show the big boys things they didn't think of. So the universal lens mounting and the smaller size and less weight seem good. But I need my optical viewfinder and like the battery life of one not running some display all the time. For me the pluses don't outweigh the minuses. I think its a fad and if consumers like what I do, these will fade off and go away. I think smartphones have influenced the situation. Do we think/hope that real photographers drive this market and not iphone users?

K-5 would be an excellent choice in my opinion. 16mp, live view, you can save both JPG and raw, many other pluses.
