Advice for new KP user: lenses

The IQ of any lens, even the highly respected Pentax Limited lenses, decreases when viewing out from the centre to the edge of the image circle. The IQ also tends to decrease towards the extremes of aperture and zoom range. Whether the deficiencies of a lens have any impact on the image depends on lots of factors, not least how they are viewed - print/screen/size/distance. I view normally on a 21 inch screen and/or print up to A3 (16 inches).

For my copy of the 18-135, my views generalise according to the circular regions in the sketch below. In the central circle the image quality is always very good - close to prime lens quality. A slight softness begins to appear in the next circle, becoming more noticeable beyond about 70 mm focal length. There is always some visible softness and vignetting in the corner regions. For many subjects (and lenses), the corner performance is of little or no consequence, as the subject is usually framed within that central circle.

For the 18-135, as the general purpose, highly versatile lens that it is intended to be, stopping down by one stop or more can produce very good quality images - and the KP will be fine with stopping down because it has such excellent higher ISO performance. It is just probably not the lens for photographing brick walls at 18 or 135 mm.

George, the shots in #221 and the first in #218 appear to have quite a strong cyan colour cast, but your other shots look natural ?

That would depend on your view of "pricey"! Mine was converted a few years ago for about 250.

The K-r has been converted by ACS in Norfolk, England, to respond to infrared light. Their technicians fit the infrared filter directly onto the sensor, so the camera will no longer capture 'normal light'. The images are formed only from the infrared light emitted by the scene - the bright parts have emitted the most infrared. To make the monochrome image in the posted example, the image from the camera was processed in Silver Efex Pro.

To fulfil that brief it is doubtful that there would be anything else that could compare with the DA 18-135.

One of comedian Rich Hall's comments about Montana was that the highway police there will pull you over just to have someone to talk to.

Nice images - the MX-1 is a very capable compact camera with a great lens. It's a shame that Pentax didn't follow it up with an upgraded Mark II model.

High/Low key adjust vs. exposure compensation
Posted By MrB1

Apart from their application at different stages of image making (as described above), I think you will find that moving the Key Slider is intended to affect the mid-tones - e.g. higher key makes the mid-tones brighter while preserving the highlights. On the other hand Exposure Compensation will affect all the tones - e.g. + EC will make the whole image brighter, so care must be taken not to go too far and blow out the highlight details in the JPEG image.

For those of us who are not working for a client, surely it must be a personal matter. I work on my captured images just enough to please me - sometimes that involves a little processing, at other times a lot. If someone else enjoys the product then that's a bonus.

Pentax, a forgotten camera brand

Sometimes there can be legitimate complaints regarding factual aspects of ergonomics. One irritating feature of the KP for me is subjective - all the changeable grips are uncomfortable compared with the built-in grip of the K-70. However, the other is objectively true - the changeable grips are a waste of internal space, which could have been used to house, e.g., the larger capacity D-Li90 battery.

On previous form, the most likely forecast should be that Pentax would be a non-runner in the firmware update stakes, but what odds would you give?

Investigate the HP Instant Ink printers - the cheapest scheme allows you to print up to 50 A4 sheets per month for $2.99. The grandkids can fit four snapshots on an A4 sheet or, of course, print a full A4 size photo.

Pentax K70 or KP with the 18/135 Pros & Cons
Posted By MrB1

The 18-135 works well on both cameras. In my opinion (before and after purchase) the changeable grips on the KP are a silly gimmick, and even the biggest is too small to give a feeling of security - I prefer the large built-in contoured grip of the K-70. I also like the fully-articulated screen of the K-70, which enables shooting at low/high positions in both landscape and portrait orientation. However, both are excellent cameras, and I can live with those two negatives (for me) for the extras in the KP which others have listed above. In practice, the most significant difference for me has been the extra control dial on the KP - it's great to have instant control of three shooting parameters.

Yes, I have no idea what the (rough!) rotation angle should be in your photo but, in a shot with a water reflection like yours, the image often looks better to me if an imaginary line joining corresponding points is not tilted.

It seems surprising that up to here there are few mentions of the DA 35 Ltd - a compact, astonishingly good, versatile, standard lens for APS-C.
