Blurry images at certain shutter speeds?

Well the good news is that I eventually got refunded. I got also told that they compared it with another unit and they both displayed this shutter speed quirk. They were keen to stress that is not supposed to be a bug, but a just a natural limitation for a small camera like this, which I find strange. Perhaps it was a bad batch but I won't be trying to find a good one for now, too much hassle.

Denny, over the few days I used the camera I accumulated many 1/800s images at the long end of the zoom and they are all blurry, blurrier than same things shot at much lower shutter speeds, with or without the ND filter. I only applied the filter to shoot exactly the same scene at the same moment in time as a convenient example. If the camera were not malfunctioning, the image with the filter applied would not have looked better. ND filters never make images look better, even quality ones, and the built-in one in this case is actually quite mediocre. Try shooting pairs of images using this kit zoom with and without the filter and see for yourself.

Now the shop in my country has failed to address the issue and they shipped the camera to a Pentax repair facility in another country so I am still waiting for their reaction and they might come back with something you have tried to say here (user error/we don't see anything), but I have been dealing with different digital cameras and lenses for over a decade and I clearly see when something is wrong like this. I hope they have the good grace to either repair or exchange the camera without starting an argument they cannot win.

I am still interested to know if this is a freak defect or something more widespread, like the shutter shock around 1/100s in (older) Olympus m4/3 cameras. But I don't think the Pentax dealership will tell me that :)

Dunno, all I know is what I am seeing and what I am seeing is weird. If anything, the image with the ND filter activated should be the blurrier one, not vice versa, because this is what occured with the 8.5mm prime on the Q I was using two years ago: ever so slight decrease in sharpness due to the ND filter activation. Perfectly understandable as an additional layer of glass (or plastic?) is introduced to the optical path, no complains there.
But the exact opposite happening in this situation, the ND filter image being clearly sharper, only reinforces the blurriness issue at around 1/800 sec.

Couple of years ago I used the first Q with several lenses, but not the zooms. I have now purchased Q10 with the 5-15mm zoom and am generally pleased with it but I have noticed that I am often getting blurry images at 15mm at around the 1/800 second shutter speed. IS is switched off because I have a steady hand and am getting tack sharp images at 15mm as low as 1/100 second. All the more strange this 1/800 stumbling block. I know from personal experience that in the m4/3 system Olympus bodies suffer from shutter shock at around 1/100 second and irrespective of focal length, but in the Q case the shutter is so tiny and light and built into the lens, not the body, and no issues at the wide end where the lens barrel actually extends more. Has anyone had this problem? Furthermore, am I also to expect shutter shock from the tele zoom lens that I want to buy?

In fact you can apply the sticker without removing the original skin, I did that over a year ago and it stayed on fine, no peeling off.

I find it very useful, I shoot in JPEG only and do not like spending time post-processing, so I got 4 most useful to me image modes very quickly accessible/switchable: single-image HDR (settings tweaked to make it look more natural than default), Gothic with Ominous Clouds (you know what I mean), maximum (brilliant??) colour saturation and bold black-and-white. And I don't do Instagram :)

The fisheye and some small things

Yeah the scale is not very logical and I made the same mistake when I was testing the fisheye in the shop, but I see you have already noticed that there is a certain position that ensures everything in focus from about a meter to infinity. So this is actually quite easy, you will soon memorise it (trust me) and set it without even looking at the display :-)

You need not worry about focusing the fisheye. You will notice that there is a certain position on the focusing scale that ensures everything in focus from about a meter to infinity. You will soon remember it by heart and set it even without checking the screen. You will only need to focus via the screen for really closeup shots :)

Dropped my Q

Was switched on, with the flash thingy extended and the fisheye attached. No excuses here, clumsy me, had never dropped a camera in over a decade, was bound to happen sooner or later. It hit a metal surface and then tumbled down and rolled on the pavement. That's the Q fecked, I thought. Wrong. The fisheye got a small dent on the front element, which was hardly surprising as the glass protrudes, but the camera itself escaped without any damage whatsoever, not even the extended flash. Tested the fisheye briefly after the accident and there is no decentering from the impact sustained and no loss of sharpness anywhere in the frame from the dent on the front element, although bright pinpointed light sources are now likely to play some havoc. But there is actually an improvement as well: the focusing ring has become tighter and it is now impossible to dislodge it from the chosen position by the slightest of accidental touches/brushes. I can put the lens cap on and put it in my pocket and then take it out again and it will conveniently remain in the previously set focus position :-)

Locked up Q

Mine has locked up a few times over the months, randomly but too rarely to panic. Removing the battery for just a second is not enough to bring it back to life BUT if you remove it for about 5 seconds then it should suffice, no need to wait for half an hour :)

A few with the standard zoom lens

Same here. Right now I have the Q and four fixed focal length lenses: the prime, the fish-eye, the toy tele and an old Soviet Jupiter M39 85mm 2.0 (inherited, not bought) with the corresponding Novoflex adapter that is suprisingly good when stopped down to at least 5.6. I really enjoy this setup but have been on the fence regarding the normal zoom and would have actually preferred a tele zoom and a dedicated macro lens and a wideangle prime, made by Pentax with AF and especially for the Q, but no dice so far.

Well my copy of the 01 is ever so slightly decentered (blurrier) on the left which I did not notice when testing it in the shop, only sometimes see it in distant objects shots when the camera is focused on infinity, but stopping down to about 4.0-4.5 virtualy eliminates it. I don't see the whale yet, I will keep looking :)

Monochrome with a blue tint, that shot displays blurry corners, especially the bottom ones, which I find strange considering you were using the 01 prime? I have never experienced such corner blurriness with it at any focusing distances, even when wide open.

Pentax Q a Failure?

My Pentax Q packaging has a list of accessories and that includes the AC adapter. Almost a year after the camera announcement I am still waiting for that incredibly technologically complicated (NOT) additional device to become actually available, ahem. And trust me, I have searched, online and offline, across the globe - literally, from London to Hong Kong. Pentax has plenty of these things out there for much less prominent cameras, so why not for the Q yet? If they can't deliver on the promise of a simple AC adapter, how are we supposed to trust them that they will develop the Q line?

Can the OP please elaborate on the zoom being softer than the prime? Is it all focal lengths, what aperture values were used? Because on the one hand the general opinion seems to be that it is quite sharp, but my personal experience of carefully testing one in a shop was disappointing, the sharpness just was not there. Maybe it is sample variation, I do not know, but I have gone lukewarm on the zoom considering its rather hefty price tag.

What new kit bundles? The double lens kit (prime + zoom) has been around since last year, are they now bundling the toy lenses?

Really? Never thought that overpriced ugly crate would enjoy good sales. If they made it more like a DSLR, with a proper grip and without the Lego buttons and put a reasonable price tag on it, I would gladly buy it for the sake of the wide range of lenses available that I could cross-use on the Q.

I would have been stupid if I even contemplated peeling off the original cover. These stickers should have been designed for installation on top of it. This way, they could have also been installable if someone wanted to mangle the camera by removing the original cover - they would only have to cut off a few mm on the side of the larger part of the sticker to make it fit. It is all about giving the client a smart choice. Right now I don't have this choice as the larger part of the sticker is horizontally shorter than it should be for installing on top and I can't make it longer, I am not a magician.

Also the workmanship should have been better, the sample images show both parts of the sticker having the same height, unlike what I got in the mail. So I pay the money AND have to finish the job for the maker of this merchandise by cutting off the extra one mm from the top of the smaller part so that the merchandise actually would look as advertised.

Bad investment and I have every right to warn others, money does not grow on trees in my country, unlike yours.

I think they are just playing safe, I did re-stick one of the two parts because I was clumsy the first time and it stuck again fine. What I don't like is that they were designed to be attached INSTEAD of the original bits and I did not see this information on the website. Hence the longer part of the sticker that goes around the picture mode dial is shorter on the side than it should be when installed ON TOP of the original cover. I think the idea that you have to remove the original cover is inherently wrong, I do not want to fiddle with my camera like this. I think these stickers should have been designed for application on top of the original cover, and unfortunately they are not.

Furthermore, my smaller (left, by the grip) part of the sticker is approximately 1 mm taller than the larger part of the sticker. This became visible when I meticulously installed/aligned them with the mic holes along the bottom. It would actually not fit in vertically if I removed the original cover to install it. Hence I have to carefully cut off 1 mm on top if I want both parts of the sticker to look level on the camera.

If I knew all of this beforehand, I would not pay so much for this thing.

I see plenty of other Pentax AC adapters everywhere, online and in shops, even in my little Estonia. Only the version for the Q is still nowhere to be purchased, although announced early on. Weird.

It's the little things that worry me, the roadmap might exist but there are already signs that Pentax is backtracking. One of the reasons I purchased the Q was to do lengthy (days, not hours) time-lapse videos as there was supposed to be an AC adapter designed specifically for the Q. Searched for it online, also while in London and Hong Kong over this winter, nowhere could I buy one. Has anyone seen/used it in real life? Enough said. I have had to invest in a camcorder now to do what Pentax had led me to believe I could do with the Q and an official accessory. For me this (maybe insignificant to most users) failure to produce what was already announced very early on indicates that Pentax is not really committed to the Q.
