No problemo. In fact it was my friend who had booked it, so it's completely unrelated to your suggestion.

I kind of figured that was the case, couldn't they just put stickers on the flashes on the phones an cameras? :)

Well it's a shame and for me not worth the money, since there are so many tourists there and very crowded.

Wow what a great photo you got of that owl, middle of the day and all.

Actually I went to Maru as well and got some closeups of koalas wallabies and kangaroos among other animals.

I was at St Kilda a few days ago and got a so so photo of a penguin and in fact I'm going there tonight to have dinner, naturally the gear is coming too so I well definitely have a loon for those penguins.

Right now I'm checking out the grafitti art and I even met an artist and got him to pose in front of his art! Heading on to a few more allies and then I'm off to cool down and change. See you guys at St Kilda, or not.

Well I've been doing quite a lot of photography and have been outside of Melbourne as well. Yesterday I went for a short trip to Phillip Island, to the Nobbies and later that evening to the penguin parade which was a bit of a disappointment. No photography or filming allowed, of any kind, with or without flash. That kinda drained my enthusiasm but I endured the somewhat expensive and underwhelming experience.

Speaking of experiences, one just replaces the other and I have no time to even review my photo's, need to spend time with the mrs as well. I'll have to put a raincheck on posting the photos until I get back or the weather gets worse. Sitting outside of Melbourne museum writing this. Just enjoying 30 degrees and sunshine. Compare that with my Swedish friends who have -6 and snow. I can't complain :D

That's a name to be reckoned with. I might just have a visit to the botanical gardens this afternoon then! Hope the 60-250 is enough if I manage to see it. I'm guessing that it's hiding/sleeping mostly during the day.

clackers - I haven't gotten to the Botanical Gardens yet, I'm kind of saving it for when I'm running out of city ideas but I will be visiting the gardens eventually. I might even go take a trip or two outside of the city limits as far as the trains and buses will take me, to see the wildlife away from the urban areas. Since I'm my starting point is east of Melbourne, Dandenong hills doesn't seem that far off for a day trip, good tip! When it comes to guides and the like, I'm trying to keep the costs down and do the photography hunting as much as I can on my own, I might consider doing a guided tour once though, just have to find that trip that I really want to do!

It seems that I can tick off one of these suggestions off the list, I'm actually heading to Healesville Sanctuary tomorrow. Apparently I have some one on one time with a wombat booked thanks to my friend here.

Des - Phillip Island seems like a great place to go, I'll see if I got some money hidden in the mattress for that trip.

surfar - I'm from Sweden, nothing is too cold for me :P

I really got to thank you guys for all the tips, I'll do it by posting some photos here, something I suck at, usually they end up on my instafeed. (PM me if you're interested in having a look I don't want to advertise it hehe, or just convince me that I shouldn't be so prude). Anyway, the Melbourne photos I've taken so far haven't quite passed the first critique filter (me) yet, but as soon as something good turns up I promise I'll show it to you guys!

Thanks for all the great tips, I will definitely check out the "real" stores but the eBay one seems to be the cheapest. buberfan, that is an extensive description of the town, the links are great, it's a big help! p38arover, that's a good tip, didn't know about it, I guess it's a bit of a catch 22, tourists don't know about it but aussies can't use it :D

I'm heading out to the town center today, so if buberfan or some other Melbournite happens to see a guy dressed in black with a Pentax busily clicking away, don't hesitate to say hi!

If you told me two weeks ago that I would be going to Melbourne this year, I'd say you're pulling my leg, but here I am and hungry for photo's, and maybe, just maybe a lens.

This is a shout out to the Aussie pentaxians, you VICs out there, what's good and what's not? I won't have my own car so I'm relying a lot on local transportation, and when she has time, a friend that lives here might be able to drive me around. Are there any gems that can't be missed? I'm usually a nature photographer so this city photography is new to me.

I'm working on getting rid of my jet lag, over one day travel time to get here so this is my day to scout locations. I'll be here for a few weeks so I got some time but I would like to be able to return to places for better lighting etc.

I mentioned a lens, are there any good camera stores that sell Pentax equipment? If I buy a lens, it will probably be the DA 15 mm, I'm really keen on getting wider angles than my current 18 mm and I heard it's good.

Have a great day guys!

Just wanted to let you guys know I decided to go for that screen calibrator, what a difference it made! My screen was way too warm, so a few of my cooler photos are a tad on the blue side. Better late than never, now I don't have to worry about that at least.

Thanks for all the help!

Yes, I'm beginning to realize that. Maybe the best solution for me is to calibrate my monitor and find a good online lab to print my selected photos.

You're right, I've fixed that issue. It was actually that ink ran out and the printer didn't tell me until I had printed another eight 4"x6" prints. The prints are as usual now, but still not fully to my satisfaction, I'm mean they are pretty close but I can do better. I'm not color blind, I've passed several tests with flying colors (pun intended).

I'm using a standard Canon printer for my simpler projects and when I want accuracy I order online at the moment. My settings are Printer manages color and I've set the printer to manual intensity where I've adjusted it slightly to correspond to what I see on the screen. It's close, but it can get better!

I'll give the color matching photo tip a try but I'm still quite keen on getting a calibrator, at least for my screen.

It's been a hectic couple of days, business and pleasure combined, but now I've finally had the time to review all these superb comments.

As I feared, getting a dual calibration setup with my budget might not be possible, but you guys say that you can come a long way by only calibrating the monitor.

My number one example of a terrible photo was a tricky lighting situation where I took a photo in a gaziboish house where one subject was exposed to outdoor lighting and the other indoor lighting. Eventually, I kind of got it to blend nicely in Camera Raw but upon printing the indoor subject was green and the outdoor subject was magenta. Is my screen that off or is this one of those situations where I would benefit from a printer calibration?

Alex645
Your response was not long considering the value of the input!

Funny enough I found the Spyderprint for cheaper than you mentioned, it's still 700 kr over my budget though. This is the one you mean, right? Datacolor SpyderPRINT | Japan Photo Sverige

When it comes to color space, I too use AdobeRGB with the intent on printing as the final process.

lsimpkins
I'm using Photoshop (CameraRaw), haven't looked into the possibility of softproofing but I'm guessing if it's there, it will be pretty similar to Lightroom.

A screen calibrator is better than no calibrator at all. I've heard a lot of people mentioning ColorMonki having a nicer color profile than XRite's models. Does anyone have experience between different brands and a little input on how much they differ, or does it not matter for a guy who will probably never buy a screen with a 98%+ gamut? Finally, if I decide on buying a screen calibrator, what do I benefit from buying an expensive one from the same maker compared to the cheap one?

I've been using this chart (http://www.normankoren.com/Stepchart_large_HSL.jpg) to test some prints using ICC profiles by the manufacturer and the greyscale has a significant blue shade. In fact all colors have a slightly colder feel to it than one would perceive in reality. I feel my printer needs calibrating.

I'm getting pretty tired of the results I get when printing at home and I am therefore looking for calibration hardware that will suit my needs. When it comes to my monitor and printer setup, it's nothing fancy and I know that if I pay more I'll get better results, however I know that I can dish out more from the things I've got with some proper calibration.

My goal is to calibrate my monitor and my printer, and be able to create ICC profiles for printing depending on paper, hence the need of a calibrator that can do paper as well as screens. The key word here is low budget. I'm willing to forgo some quality just as long as I get acceptable results, it's not necessary that the photo is an exact replica of the color rendered off the wallpaper in the living room, just that it's close enough. It would be nice to be perfect but... low budget.

What is low budget? Well, I live in Sweden and taxes are higher and all that so a simple calculation is 10 SEK to a USD for electronics. My budget is around 1000-2000 SEK i.e. 100-200 USD. At first glance you can find lots of calibrators for that price, but upon further inspection you notice that many only calibrate screens. This is where I need your help guys, I know just about what I'm looking for but I just can't find it, or perhaps it's not within my price range...

Exposure and color matching three images

Nope, didn't do the trick...I can't get those reds to really pop up. I'll try some more though, I hate giving up on a good photo. But if all else fails, I only see two ways out of this jam, either manipulating the photos or doing some movie magic and blending the sequence.
I've learned now that you can only go so far with exposure compensation until it's not retrievable anymore, in my case, my limit goes at about 1.6 stops, after that, one needs a higher dynamic range.

However, if someone has any other tips, feel free to share them!

No, unfortunately this is not a white balance issue. The last two photos were taken only seconds apart and the sunlight hadn't changed much during that time. The problem lies in that the second photo is gravely overexposed and I've tried to compensate as well as I can but the exposure slider is not good enough for anything more than a stop +/-.

Assume that the rainbow is brighter than the cloudy sky, the cloudy sky would then be closer to midrange exposure. In the second and third photo you can clearly see that white balance isn't off by way to much in the clouds but the rainbow is nearly washed out due to overexposure. I'm trying to find a way to rescue this.
Perhaps by concentrating on the reds in the high end of the exposure curve might help?

Okay guys, here's a tough one. I'm using Adobe Photoshop CC and am in Camera RAW tryign to get a large set of images taken with interval shooting at two different exposures. I started off by taking 60 images and then the landscape changed, the sun appeared from behind thick clouds causing a lot of images to be overexposed. I modified the exposure setting and shot another 60 images. Now, I could just skip the overexposed images if it wasn't for that I am going to make a time lapse video out of it which I will gladly link to if I succeed in PPing these images.

As you know, just pulling the exposure slider to the left won't do the trick, the color is just plain wrong. I need some tips and tricks on some PP magic, saturation, hue, brightness etc. I just can't seem to get it right. Is there some method I'm missing or do I just randomly pull some sliders and hope for the best? Look carefully at the rainbows and notice the lack of reds in 3549 (center image). That is the overexposed work in progress so to speak.

My local camera store sells Pentax cameras and has them on display as well. One of the guys that works there even worked at Pentax when they had an office here. Both my K10D and my current K-3 was purchased there along with a lot of other equipment. They also match online prices from other leading stores so I'm very satisfied. Yes I got to look and feel before I bought :)

Okay! Now I understand! No software recognizes the bundled photos apart from Digital Camera Utility 5. That's kind of a drag because it's a nice feature to have the photos bundled up like this for HDRs.

Where is that darned CD...

In camera HDR with RAW

I'm not new to HDR photography. I've used several different computer programs for the job, Photomatix being my favorite. You can sit there for an hour tweaking the photo until your eyes go pixel-shaped, but if you just want a quick HDR you might just want to try out the in camera HDR, it does a pretty good job... in jpg mode or post processing in camera...

But I'm a RAW shooter and like to finalize my images on the computer. So, how does one go about using these RAW images?? Adobe Bridge tells me the huge 80+MB photo has a 14 bit depth so its hardly an HDR but the size is nearly three times that of a normal RAW photos from my K-3.

I have the DSLR Video Fastpack 350 (DSLR Video Fastpack 350 AW Camera bags, backpacks and rolling cases) and find it very comfortable with the straps. It has plenty of room and when I bought it, it needed to have room for a 15.6" laptop which this one has. Here's an example list of what it can carry, have in mind I don't own everything on this list but it will easily fit (for example grip and several lenses mentioned below):

Camera compartment
DSLR with grip and 16-50 mm attached
70-200 mm
100 mm
Flash with diffuser
Cables for laptop
One of those rocket bellows

Top compartment
Two pairs of underwear, shirts and socks
Book or small bag for toothbrush etc
Special case for small cables included in backpack
Pens, batteries etc in inner compartment

Rear compartment
15.6" laptop
Magazine

Hidden rear compartment
Some extra cash
Passport

Outer holder
Medium sized tripod, for example Manfrotto 190XPROB or a water bottle

I've actually walked with this pack filled with nearly this much in it, apart from the tripod and even then it's pretty heavy but if you have to, you have to.
I don't do any weekend business trips but I could imagine that it might work if you want to mix some pleasure in the business trip :)
