If I could only have one, I'd pick an MX with a 50 f/1.4.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The corner softness doesn't really bother me much. Typically what is in the corners is not the focus of my photograph.

Example from this lens attached.

I was pleasantly surprised by the 18-135mm. I bought it because it came with my K-3, but I've ended up using that lens for nearly everything I shoot that doesn't need a fast aperture. It's plenty sharp for anything I need.

This technical bulletin only applies to T-Max, not Tri-X. Sorry, I misunderstood.

Tri-X has a colored base and I've not been able to do anything about it. Like Chris, I use Ilford roll films now pretty much exclusively. Foma for large format.

I would not worry about the colored base with your Tri-X. When printing optically and scanning digitally, it does not pose an issue. I would only say to ensure you fix with fresh fixer (recommend a rapid non-hardening fixer, like Ilford Rapid Fixer) for 5 minutes. Then do the Ilford archival rinse (look up the instructions on Ilford Photo's website). Finish with Photo-Flo. Good luck!

I PM'ed! The gaff tape looks fine but a replacement cap would be a better solution - thanks for sending me that thread!

Same with the P30T, but you can dial in manual exposure - so it isn't too difficult to make sure your actual exposure is 2 stops off, if using 400 speed bulk film.

In some ways it's a shame that digital came on so fast and heavy - cameras like the MZ-S and Dynax 7 were really the top of the mark for 35mm SLR technology, and I would love to have seen what else they were working on before they had to rip up the blueprints and double down on digital.

You can also buy used cassettes on eBay, or ask local labs if they have any they'll give you. Of course all the Fuji 400 and Gold 400 cassettes they have are DX coded. Their machines typically leave a small tongue sticking out of the cassette, all you have to do is tape on your bulk film and wind back in. Commercial cassettes have thinner felt traps and can't be reused as many times as reloadable cassettes, but they're fine for a good while.

Popular Photography in the early aughts rated the FA Limiteds as the best lenses on 35mm period - for any mount and for any system. Including Leica.

They are sharp sure, but a cooke triplet is sharp as well. They have a certain rendering that can't really be replicated. The FA 43mm, the only one I currently own, never has its rear cap affixed because it's always on one of my cameras. I might as well cement it onto my MZ-S.

You should begin by reading the reviews on Pentax Forums submitted by users. They're all here, in the FA Prime section: Pentax FA Prime Lenses - Reviews and Specifications - SLR and Interchangeable Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

Where are the Black Friday & Cyber Monday 2016 deals for Pentax lenses & cameras?

If they own such a large stock of glass blanks, it looks like they'd be willing to release more new lenses and sell those lenses at reasonable prices. Pentax lenses were very well priced earlier this year - the FA 31 in particular was well below $800. DFA 100mm was well below $400. I was a fool for not buying then, but Ricoh is a fool for expecting us to be happy with these black friday deals.

This can be stacked with their current cyber monday deal of SAVE10 for 10% off $150+ orders - this is a super deal on Kodak film! Whatever format you shoot - stock up now! When Hollywood goes 100% digital, Kodak film will be gone for good I fear - or at least will be so expensive it will no longer be worthwhile to shoot as I do now.

MZ-S cable release/grip rubber covers turning into goo

It's sad to hear that I could have prevented this by maintaining the rubber. I will likely leave the grip contact covers off, since I typically use the grip anyway. For the cable release socket, I will likely cover it with gaff tape - I don't want to leave the socket open for fear of something shorting it out. Thank you both for your advice.

MZ-S cable release/grip rubber covers turning into goo

Folks,

Does anyone have a recommendation for dealing with the issue where the rubber covers on the MZ-S for the cable release socket and grip contacts degrade into goo? The cover for my cable release socket in particular has basically turned into play-dough - it does not hold its shape at all. I think this is because the rubber used just degrades and oxidizes over time - same reason why a lot of F100's and A2's have a sticky rubber grip nowadays.

Any tips are appreciated.

Thanks!

77 limited : awesome, but focus past infinity ?

I think it's probably worthwhile to send that lens back to Pentax - needing to dial in that much micro adjustment plus the issues of infinity focus is not normal for that lens in my opinion. Others may disagree, but it doesn't take a lot of money or time to send the lens back to Pentax's repair facility.

Scanning 4x5 pretty much means using a flatbed for normal people without the budget for a Hasselblad/Imacon scanner, but the quality of the negative is unmatched by anything else out there. Large format will probably be unmatched by digital for another 5 years at least.

I've got wet 20x24 prints from my 4x5 film that are grainless, tack sharp, and truly immersive. Nothing digital can match that, yet.

If you have to dial in +9 AF adjustment and infinity focus is that far off, either something is really off kilter with that lens or your camera. I've never had to use AF adjustments on any of my cameras.

Do you have to dial in that much AF adjustment with other lenses?

If you ever want to sell that Pakon scanner, let me know.

Personally, if I'm going to deal with a medium format camera I'd just as soon shoot my 4x5. It's equally as heavy, and equally as difficult to process/scan/print for me, but gives you so much more control and image quality. The only medium format camera I have these days is a Holga, but I have a few 4x5 cameras and of course a couple 35mm too, besides my K-3.
