KP look and feel

I have never fully bonded with the KP. It doesn't fit my hand the way the K-5 did, and never will. But it's such a good camera I own two of them and use them every day. My hope is -- and based on the teaser photos this is probably true -- that the K-new will go back to that incredibly sensual feel the K-5 has, but will offer the functionality and great image quality of the KP. Sadly, it looks like the K-new doesn't have an articulating screen, so it may be a complicated decision. I've gotten kind of addicted to using one.

645D advantages over K3II?

One thing to consider is how useful your old 645 glass will be on the 645D. I rented one a while back as I also have several manual focus 645 lenses. It's a beautiful camera and, as mentioned, the CCD sensor creates nice colors. But I found my manual focus lenses too fussy to use for my style of photography, which admittedly is more spontaneous than will allow much tripod use.

Does anyone actually print photos any more?

I print regularly -- about three or four 18x24-inch or larger prints a week -- on a wide-format Epson 7880 I got used last year for $800 (it replaced a well-used Epson 7600 I ran for seven years after buying it for $500). Using aftermarket ink from Ink Owl makes the cost of running it negligible, and I use a variety of papers, none of which carries the word "photography" anywhere on the label. I rarely make conventional photographs; instead I'm producing black and white prints on non-photo papers for hand coloring with acrylic paints, destined for fine art galleries. For this work I like the character of everything from watercolor paper to good printmaking paper such as Stonehenge to used grocery bags and even newsprint. OK, I have odd tastes.

That first Epson was a big leap of faith, and I have to say it changed my photographic life. Size matters. It's great to be able to print large -- I often do vertical panoramas of up to 24 by 84 inches -- and it's great to be able to try something out you just thought of, at home, any time day or night, without involving a commercial printer. The cost of operation has been much cheaper than hiring things done, not to mention all the transportation and shipping (we live well out of town) that would be involved.

Also, whenever I suffer an attack of GAS -- and who hasn't? -- I find the best cure is to go out and shoot something and print it large with the cameras I already have and then try to imagine what buying a new piece of gear could possibly improve ;)

Yes, you have to maintain the equipment -- it helps to be a tinkerer -- but the pro printers are well built, and you can find most of what you need to know to fix them on YouTube. Basically I wore the old one out. My current model has worked without clogs or jams or any other issues for more than a year.

My son and I stopped there last summer. I found it curiously difficult to photograph convincingly, especially in midday light.

Landscape lens question

My favorite landscape setup involves two lenses on two KP bodies: The 15/4 Limited on one and the 55-300 PLM on the other. Fabulous, light combo that can do practically anything.

Do you set the date and time on your cameras?

For the past five years I've kept my cameras (four of them) set to standard time throughout the year. Made that decision after I realized I never would remember to reset all of them twice a year. So now I know what time my photos were actually taken --- and it's a lot less work.

I do touch up the exact time now and then to combat drift.

Try the Windows version of Darktable. It's free/open source. Darktable does just about everything Lightroom does, and does some things better. It will take some time to learn -- but so does Lightroom.

This is a great deal for someone who's got a KP to put all those lenses on. I should know -- I've got all but the 40 (I do have the 43) -- and they're a match made in photography heaven.

I use the small grip on one of my two KPs. It works really well with the small DA Limiteds, making the KP almost as small as a film camera. My other KP has the large grip, for the DA* 300 or the 55-300 PLM. If I'm headed out in the woods to shoot photos, my favorite setup these days is the 15 Ltd on one body and the 55-300 on the other.

The 1Ds has 45 autofocus points compared to nine in the 5D. The AF is faster and more reliable.

I see the OP has stayed in the crop fold, which is probably sensible.

For future readers who might be tempted by cheap older Canon FF bodies, I'd rather shoot (and have shot) the old 1Ds body than the original 5D. It costs about the same -- $200ish -- and has real autofocus, unlike the old 5D. Amazing image quality at reasonably low ISO and is built like a tank. Another possibility for about the same price is the APS-H 1.3 crop 1D II, a real sports shooter.

I'd also pass on the Canon 50 1.4, which is kind of a dog in the Canon world. Get a cheap 50 1.8, or the pancake 40 2.8. Add in a used 85 1.8 and the world is your oyster.

Jumping back into Pentax - KP, K1, or switch to another brand?

I love my Pentax gear (a pair of KPs and an assortment of lenses) but find I reach for Canon for portraits: a 6D and an 85/1.8. Add a 28 and you'e covered most possibilities. The autofocus is more responsive for capturing fleeting expressions, and Canon's wireless flash system is simple and reliable for shooting both indoors and out.

Current KEH prices: 6D $650; 85/1.8 $240; 28/2.8 $130.

Anyone done any birding shooting jpegs on a K-P

The KP's JPGs are so good that I've started shooting JPG-only as a default; in other words, I'll switch to DNG only if I have a particular reason, like a high-DR scene or concerns about white balance. Those Pentax engineers apparently know how to get a good photo out of the camera they designed.

Glad to read that you're liking the KP. Do give it time, as it's quite a different experience than the K-5. Some people like it right off; more people, I suspect, take time to warm up to it. I certainly did, but now feel very little need to buy a K-1 -- though I certainly will be interested in looking at the K-new when it appears.

The thieves were probably Canikon snobs.

Sorry about the OP's gear.

Is a 'Fast' lens stopped down the same as a 'slow' lens at the same aperture?
Posted By bkpix
Replies: 37
Yes, they are the same, at least in theory. One practical difference, though, is that faster lenses -- especially f2.8 and faster -- are often better in quality than slower lenses. That means that sometimes the faster lens will have less distortion and greater across-the-frame sharpness, for example, than a slower lens, even at the same f-stop.

There may also be minor variation in the amount of light transmitted by any two lenses set at f8, depending on the quality of the glass and the number of elements in the lenses.

Eleven Pentax "specific / distinctive features" : do they impact your photography ?

1- Astrotracer : only proposed in Pentax SLRs, since K-3II (K-1, KP, K-1II) ; previously and otherwise available with O-GPS-1 add-on module. Don't use it.

2- Pixel-shift : only on Pentax SLRS, since K-3II (K-1, KP, K-1II ; some other makers produce resolution enhancement via multi-exposure like Olympus and Fuji). Use it regularly to photograph art work.

3- Composition adjustment : only on Pentax SLR, since K-5. Nope.

4- AF precise adjustment : first on Pentax SLR, since K-10D. Use regularly.

5- TAV mode : only on Pentax SLR, since K-10D (equiv. to M mode + ISO auto on GR III ; and other brands). Use all the time for long lens work.

6- Green button : only on Pentax SLR, since MZ series. Use all the time.

7- Sensor shake reduction : first on Pentax K-10D (and Minolta 7D) Use all the time.

8- Effective "all weather"/"weather resistant" sealing : systematic on Pentax SLR, after K-S1 ; and in Pentax new lenses since a few years. Use all the time.

9- Pentaprism versus pentamirroir : systematic on Pentax SLR, since K-S1

10- In-body raw development : first on Pentax SLR, since K-10D

11- DNG raw format : first on Pentax, since K-5 (and Leica). Use all the time.

Single-Step switch to monochrome on a KP
Posted By bkpix
Replies: 6

Yes, KP has 5 user settings on the mode dial. I've got one set to monochrome, another set for monochrome HDR, so that I don't have to menu dive. Works great. If you want to make the transition even easier, you can program U1, say, to regular program shooting in color, and U2 to monochrome. That makes it a single click back and forth on the mode dial.
