Pentax-DA 35mm F2.8 Macro auto focus weakness

Rather than the lens itself, this 'issue' probably has more to do with Pentax AF in general and the way that 1:1 AF macro lenses function.
It could've been the reviewer's first time using a 1:1 AF macro, so maybe didn't know what to expect. It's a long focus throw from infinity to macro.

This is a solid and very sharp lens, works best for me on the K-01 ! :)

Def get the HD version, and it will cover FF (at least in the close up range) according to this:

Idk that you understood what I was saying.
Using OCR and the same type of optic path as those old models mentioned, Pentax could now visually read the actual aperture set without the need for any mechanical coupling(s). No need to make any mount changes, all simple optics and software.

Are you sure it's not set to 'display off' ?

Double click the INFO button and check.
Chances of two failed units are pretty slim..

On a related aperture ring note .. Pentax killed off the old rheostat aperture detector and forced us to use stop down metering years ago on DSLRs.
Well remember those aperture readout windows on the prisms like the KX, MX and others?
So how about a modern version with OCR so that the body can know exactly what aperture K and M series lenses (and 3rd party) are set at!?
The info is always in that same spot on those lenses, should be a relatively simple optical and software implement, no mechanics needed.
I would welcome such a feature!

To buy a k20d or not

I find the limit on the K20d at iso 800, so I always stay below that. For an old cam it's still surprisingly good for outdoor and telephoto work. Something about that sensor, although noisy, it presents almost a kind of grain. I especially like the look when converted to b&w after the fact, reminds me of Tri-X film. I never use the built in b&w settings, way toooo much noise. It pairs well with legacy super tele lenses and resolves excellent details, in comparison the KP produces kinda 'milky smooth' results with same lens .. BUT there's that shadow noise on the K20d. Still I use mine most often with the cheap Sigma 70-300 for decent results. Since the cam is weather sealed (and the lens so cheap it's almost disposable) it's great to use when paddling. The build quality is pretty good, even if mostly plastic the weatherproofing seems more substantial than the likes of the KP. Also .. like others mentioned it's ergonomically nearly prefect the way it fits in my hand!

Anyone ever have a broken Q series camera or lens?

I've found the Q to be very durable overall, surviving at least 3x collapses / falls with my various poles for aerial photography.
One fall cracked the back screen (and nearly my a ankle) but it still works fine. Another time one "kissed" a saltwater tidal pool in a similar way.

A few years ago I acquired a 'non-working' Q off eBay for $10 delivered for parts.
This one also had a fall and cracked glass screen, but the lcd was also toast.
Out of curiosity I connected this Q to a TV via A/V cables and determined that it worked fine.
Here's my story on taking it all apart and repairing it, still works fine!
The Q is actually easy to work on, although the tiny memory battery can go bad over time and I believe is soldered in.

I thought about turret mounted lenses adapted from old movie cameras, but D mount wouldn't work on the Q.

1000mm and 1200mm lenses

The K 1000mm f/8 is an old school design but still a very sharp lens. It's a very large lens, about 15 lbs with cam, so needs a heavy duty tripod and a gimbal mount to balance on properly. After that you feel like a tail gunner swinging it around! Aside from the portability (or lack there of) I've taken mine to remote locations in the Everglades via kayak. It gives a reach of 1500mm with APSC and I found my K20D to be the limiting factor, not the lens (sensor too noisy above 800)! I've successfully used it with my Q also, and even with a 2x TC for a ridiculous effective reach of 11200mm!!
It's able to pull in distant details from many miles away provided you can focus it and the weather is good. There is some fringing on highlights, but not bad f/11 - f/13. The rack and pinion focus action is super smooth and very precise. I only wish that it had a focus lock screw!

See here for a trip I did with this lens: (scroll down to the lens)
Winter birthday triad on Florida Bay with the ‘Banana Boat’! | kayakfari ( kayak .. far .. i )

Another option is the 1000mm f/11 reflex which is a lot lighter and a lot smaller, hence will naturally get more use. I use a larger video fluid head and a medium duty pod, rock solid! The reflex is not quite as sharp as the refractor (to my eyes) but focuses much closer than the big gun. Excellent for moon shots, again with APSC cams like the 24mp KP (same pixel density as K-1) and an older Sony 16mp Nex-3N. This one also good for solar observation with a safety filter on the front. The reflex also has a bit of fringing on highlights, but the secondary mirror obstruction is comparatively small, so not too many donuts (unlike the 500mm mirrors!) which is nice! The KP is a huge improvement in higher ISO performance, and the K-1 MII will likely give similar results. Very well made lens, handles easy for what it is.

See here for reflex eclipse shots (also with a Q):

Here's the last 'pink' full moon with the reflex and KP:
The Coronavirus might stop our world, but can’t reach the sky nor the moon! | kayakfari ( kayak .. far .. i )

To sum up, lenses of this focal length are special purpose, you need to plan ahead to use them properly and successfully. Also you will probably need to do some PP to boost contrast (esp the mirror) and adjust colors. The reflex I'd recommend if you can get it at a good price. The big refractor get only if you're willing to lug it around, it comes in a big aluminum case. It will draw a lot of attention if you pull it out in public! ;)

PENTAX Reverse Adapter K fit

Thanks all! This helps to confirm my suspicion that they are made to fit really tight. Both are about the same and it makes no difference what body or other K flange I try to attach it to. So any tips on making them go on smoother?

I have two of the PENTAX Reverse Adapter K,
PENTAX Reverse Adapter K reviews - Pentax Camera Accessory Review Database

in 49mm and 52mm.
They look beautifully made, however both go on super tight onto the K mount.

In fact it's almost impossible to fully click into place. I have tried with film and digital bodies.

What gives? Aftermarket 3rd party adapters go on/off smooth. Chances of both being this bad?

What am I missing on this?

I would not alter the original mount so lens can be returned to original condition if needed. The brass flanged adapters tend to be thicker and stronger than the typical cheap aluminum versions, but you'll have to experiment with the thickness.
If you don't already own it, you'd be much better off getting the M42 version and adding a PK ring to it!

The new lens is the same as the older version, just looks a lil different. It remains a preset manual aperture with no contacts or any pins or levers to deal with.
I would rate this as one of the simplest conversions, just need to find a good brass M42 -> K flanged adapter or suitable donor lens. The hardest part looks to be drilling the 5 holes precisely. There's no reason to alter the lens, just take off the F mount flange and replace.

Thanks! I thought about that but it looked like the IR glass was just a very thin cap at the end. So I didn't think it would help much. Now that you've cut out the Q IR cut filter no need to mess with the lens!

Removing the top cover is the first step, then the back comes off per what I previously posted.
I never separated the LCD glass from the back - I replaced the entire back cover as a unit!
