That must have been amazing and inspiring.
There is a well known public gallery north of Toronto. A few years ago they had a showing of Yousuf Karsh's early work. In the room they had an older large print book of the same work. My wife asked me what I was doing...I was looking at the open book in the glass showcase and comparing it to the enlarged print on the wall. The book had spectacular detail in the print. The one on the wall had been printed darker and with less contrast, the prints did not come close to matching in detail. So being the busybody that I am....I asked to speak to the curator, and I inquired how the prints do not come close to matching. So she explained, the prints on the wall are not the original prints, but are sets that were reprinted and approved by the Karsh organization. Very, very disappointing and I am sure Karsh would also not be pleased. Why the reprints would not be matched as close to the originals is beyond me.

So to actually view original Ansel Adam prints...wow! Jealousy here for sure.

Hi Bob. Welcome to the forum. The K1 is certainly a challenge when first starting, but with practice, the instruction manual, and the excellent ebook by Yvonne Bourque, it becomes easier to use and more predictable. The ebook can be purchased on this site. You paid how much for the camera.....get the ebook, turn to page 289 and read the next few pages about the GPS and astrophotography. Astrophotography is not my specialty but you can always reach out to me, as I am in Toronto, if you have any questions about the camera, lenses, accessories. Best of luck with the camera! Regards, David.

I also looked at the lenspen.com site and the photos. There is nothing written, as far as I could find, as to what specific materials, cloths, papers, were used to clean the lenses. Second, one does not clean a lens, glasses or camera, without it being wet with cleaning solution or even one’s breath. Otherwise...it scratches. Last, I am not sure what RF999 AR coating was used (no manufacturer stayed) and the current AR coatings are very resistant to scratches, in general. I am not against the product, have used it in my office, but there is a lack of details on the very long write up on the company’s website.

seems we go through this topic 1-2 X /year....for a general look at various cleaning methods:
Best camera lens cleaners in 2020 | Digital Camera World

Carbon tipped lens type designs will not scratch your camera lens or glasses. But it depends if there are any larger foreign substances on the lenses, in which case rubbing the lens surface will scratch. So blow off dirt first, then clean. The carbon attracts the oil and dirt, then you recharge the tip with more carbon for the next time. The only problem we found in our office using the device, the applicator tip only covers a few mm so you need to go in a circular pattern all over the lens, time consuming, then check the lens as you may have missed some overlapping areas. Sam eproblem we noticed when cleaning lenses in glasses. Sales rep, who we know very well, told us we were the only one having these problems.

Microfibre cloths are usually included with camera bodies, all lenses, and even with $50k eye imaging equipment. The synthetic fibres are smooth and fine enough to not scratch lenses and absorb the oil and films. Again, larger particles need to be blown off forst. Eventually the cloth absorbs too much foreign material and does not clean properly. At that point, the cloth is to be thrown out. Cleaning these type of cloths will result in the fibres becoming looser and possibly scratching a lens. The larger and thicker cloths used for i.e. cleaning a TV screen have larger diameter fibres and can be washed and reused. So generally for cleaning cameras or glasses, use lens cleaner on cloth, clean, use a dry part of the cloth to finish drying.

Lens paper is so finely made that when wet it will not scratch and the alcohol applied chemical will evaporate by itself.

A shirt, silk scarf, etc., may feel soft but the rough edges of the fibres will eventually scratch your lenses. Which is why you will notic lots of fine scratches on patient's glasses when that is how they clean them.

Best source now for all the necessary items, just like almost everything else, Amazon.

You keep telling yourself... look right then left, look right then left, and then you rush across the street and boom...you forgot which way to look first...just human nature. Thank goodness never got hit but did get honked once or twice. Maybe they need to give paper signs to tourists at the airport to stick to the back of ones clothes...TOURIST

Your insurance story reminds me of the first week when my province went to “no fault insurance”. Guy backs up with a pick up truck and takes off the front end of my car..,in a parking lot and takes off, witness gave me his licence number. Insurance company took a week until they agreed to pay for repairs..because if no one was charged then no one is at fault or are both parties at fault!

Simple way to design roundabouts and learn how to drive in them.,.go to London, Rome, Jerusalem. If yo survive all 3 then you have mastered it.

I did not drive in England as I had no use for scar since we mainly stayed in London...but even walking took me a while to remember to look to the right and then the left.

Israel....almost everywhere is a roundabout or a stoplight..,very few stop signs. I had no real difficulty getting used to driving...just fast paced, lots of honking...but gps on the phone made roundabouts simple.

Manhattan, didn’t bother me because everything is in straight lines, grid system, one way mostly, miss a street and just go one more and go around back to where you miss.

Boston...I never want to drive in the city again. Stayed close to Harvard, even my go’s got lost- some streets directions had been changed since unit was updated.

Toronto...where I live...mainly a grid system with straight lines. But one of our city councillors decided to put in 2 roundabouts on a long side street to slow down the traffic. Each year they had to be repaired because people had no idea how to drive around and would hit parts of it. Next city councillor decides we need more stop signs on the road to slow down traffic even more. Wait for it...stop signs at the same location as the roundabouts! So the citizens asked for the roundabouts to be removed since they are now useless. Politicians answer...no.

Remember , after k1 ii came out, and DPR did their annual video review of full frame cameras, Pentax came in last. Why, because their were no radical changes from the K1. That seemed to answer everything I needed to know about DPR and Pentax.

Welcome to the forum.I probably mentioned this in another posting. I was accepted to our College after graduating high school. The College only taught courses that were of a practical nature, 3-4 years long for each certificate. There was one exception as I found out...Photographic Arts. After an interview, presenting one's portfolio, and being accepted...I the stopped at the teacher's lounge and got one of the interviewing teachers answer a few questions.I wanted to know where in the 4 year course do they teach about the science behind photography, or how to set up a professional lab, etc. Or is there a course on photojournalism, etc. All answers were no...I would only learn about the art of photography. The teacher was actually quite nice about it and told me to think twice about accepting the admission.

Enjoy your courses and now you also have all of the Pentax Forum members to help you with your homework/assignments!

Diopters

Hi Sally, Maybe I am the one that is confused...
(1) when you look through a DSLR eyepiece, the focus is for distance infinity. So if you do not need glasses for the distance (i.e. do not wear for driving), then the eypice would be set to zero for no correction. If you are myopic (nearsighted) or hyperopic (farsighted) then you can adjust or purchase tye appropriate lens correction. If you have significant astigmatism then you are out of luck, and you would need your glasses.
(2) the focal distance of a lens used to be in inches a long, longtime ago. Then it changed into using the metric system, and measured in dioptres. So a pair of reading glasses with +1.00 or +2.50 is in dioptres.
(3) you cannot put your reading lens measurement, say +2.50 , into a corrective lens for the eyepiece as the viewfinder would be blurred
(4) the problem most people have is not seeing through the viewfinder but seeing the lcd screen on the back of the camera, or the dials

Hope that makes sense

I drive a Scion Xb trd as my winter car....so really just a rebadged Toyota. Not sure how that makes a difference other than it is a good car made by a good manufacturer.

So if a Pentax lens is designed by another company, then tweaked by Pentax when badged as one of their own...all I care about is how does the lens perform and is it manufactured well.

Now if it was a Sears brand k mount badged as a Pentax, I may have a problem with that.

200000 yen is approximately 1900 Us ($2500) CDN. The full frame KII is only a few hundred more....hopefully when released North American price is not a straight currency conversion.

Hard to find Pentax cameras in local camera stores...been like that for several years and likely not going to get better. The larger stores in Toronto will usually order one for you but don’t expect to actually see one in any store.

Stock of electronic items is low everywhere here. A year ago I could walk into a Staples store and pick out one of 10 different HP printers that they had in stock. Not anymore. Even on the HP Canada store, inkjet printers, lots are not in stock.

So a camera company that stores do not like to stock their product, plus a pandemic, equals little stock.

Driving in the Toronto area has always been bad. Turn signals on the highway seem to be optional, turning your lights on at night also seem optional, staying in the passing lane below the speed limit is almost like an enshrined human right. Now with Covid things got crazier. For about 4 months there was very little traffic on the highways. So the crazies thought the highways were their own personal racetracks. Cars are racing each other across all lanes and no police out there. Worse episode personally for me...about 1 1/2 months ago. Was moving into the left passing lane to pass someone, checked all my mirrors and blind spot, was going above speed limit. Just moved to the left and a car zipped around me at about 180 km/hr. You could not see him coming. He then got upset with me and blocked me! For real! Every time I moved over to get away he moved over to the same lane and slowed down. This went on across all the lanes for a few Km’s until he cut across 6 lanes to get to his exit. Thank goodness are roads are now getting busier.
