To clarify a point or two;
If I had been born with a spoon in my mouth, it would have been rusty tin.
Both grandfathers were dead long before I was born - paternal, a couple of years, maternal, 20 or 30 years.
Inheritances from both sides of the family ranged from zero to not that much.
Pocket money was also zero - I had a morning paper round for a few years from where any calls on my offer to return the pommies home would have come. I heard lots of complaints about Australia from the pommies but they are all still here.
:lol::lol:

Well said, but don’t call me Eenglish.
(I’m Aussie, mate. As a kid I used to offer my pommie “friends” ten pounds (the price of a migrant’s fare in those days) to go back home.)

When our daughter left home her greatest fear was that her parents wouldn't be able to manage the PVR, and that her mum would burn the house down leaving the hotplates switched on.
Her mum's last words (almost) to daughter was to not forget to use garnish on her meals.
fwiw, House hasn't burnt down. We managed the PVR (have now upgraded and have a new smart(er) TV and a universal remote which confuses said daughter when she visits.
We ate at her place today - d-i-l's birthday. Mrs R took garnish (obviously not trusting daughter!!)

Oh, Tim, please be assured that no offense was meant to the good people of Oxford.
My complaint is directed to the industrial "giants" who turned multiple companies into BMC and British Leyland (or was it the other war around).
My own experience with the brands; Dad bought an Austin A40 (Devon) in about 1953-54, and a Morris Oxford Mark 2 a few years later.
The Austin travelled from one side of Victoria to the other annually for the years we had it - 2 kids in the back seat with a couple of suitcases that wouldn't fit in the boot (US=trunk) and one kid between parents in the front. We even slept in it once!!!!!!
The Morris towed an old bondwood caravan (US=trailer) for a number of years. (Didn't get in to top gear one day, travelling into the wind)

That's why the Brits colonised so much of the world.
There was so much stuff that they needed back home, which could be made in the colonies!!
In return, they sold us Austins and Morrises and Vanguards that have all gone the way of the dodo.
EDIT; ...and Land Drovers which Mark will attest that are half the reason that the world is short on oil!

Back in the 1960s I was a junior officer in a bank in a country town. The no1 customer was involved in quarries, contracting, had numerous dairy farms with share farmers running them (read tenant farmers) and also owned a Mercedes Benz dealership in another town.
He pranged his Benz and checked with the workshop at the dealership how long to fix it. The answer didn't please him "I can't wait that long"; walked into the showroom and pointed out a car and said I'll have that one!!
His office manager received the repaired Benz as his next Christmas bonus.
If only Prince Phil had owned a dealership; could have had a replacement the same day!

Just before my first child was born, I jumped from a Praktica IV to a really lovely AutoReflex T. I think the lens was 52mm 1.8 or was there another 52mm lens?
(I guess anything would seem lovely after the Praktica.)
It was a magnificent camera and I only gave it up when the light meter became unreliable and I couldn't get it fixed.
Ended up with a Pentax MZ50. I didn't think it was a patch on the Konica.

Walt, there is a church at Paynesville on the Gippsland Lakes in Victoria where the pulpit is in the shape of the bow of a boat and picture windows behind it looking out over the lakes. It is a long time since I saw it but you probably had to be standing to see the lakes beyond the preacher. Probably very distracting when there were power boats on the lake - particularly when there were races!!
EDIT
Well, it is not quite as I remember it (maybe 50 years ago!) https://stpetersbythelakeanglicanchurch.org/contact-us |

We are pretty normal here (for rain that is!)
But you may have noticed on your news service that Queensland* and New South Wales have had more have there fair share.
They just get over on flood and then another comes along.
Given that there is only so much rain to fall over the whole earth (Grant's law of climate equilibrium), the more that we get, the less there is for others - and vice versa.
*Actually it is not all of Queensland and NSW; just the eastern half - parts of Queensland are still in drought.

Can't argue with that either.
The swelling is hard on the eyes.
There are other factors that are exceedingly hard on the nose.
