I have considered the same thing. Aside from the $$$, the versatility of the zoom is important to me. I am currently in the Black Hills and wildlife opportunities are overwhelming. The major drawback of a fixed lens in this situation would be changing my location to adjust the composition. The terrain can be a challenge, or even dangerous, and the subject is not usually cooperative. If shooting from a blind or similar fixed location I would think the prime would shine. As for IQ degradation of the PLM at full focal length, I extend to 300mm but then back off slightly to +/- 275 and get acceptable results. The speed of focus is a gift. As always you need the proper tool for the particular job.

Barry Lyndon was supposedly shot using only "natural" light. Would the technology of the time allow it?

We watched Carol Reed's, The Third Man, earlier this week and it was the first time since I became half-way serious about photography. What struck me was there were few straight-on shots, cityscape or human portrait. Perhaps it was particularly noticeable in black and white. It was (almost) too much but said wake-up and think. This recalled The Duelists for color and contrast as an example of sets the mood. My background is dealing with history so there may be a bias. Of course, John Ford is a constant lesson in composition, especially "where is the horizon."
Please suggest other movies that are photography lessons. I find that repetition in a film get through to me better than looking at photographs.

Hwy 87 Blue Bell area, Custer State Park, South Dakota. Many of the bridges in the park were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. This bridge and the pig-tail bridge above were probably from that time, with multiple repairs and updates of course.

There is an unconfirmed report that the local whiskey distillery accidently discharged into the lake.

Pig-tail bridge in The Black Hills, South Dakota. When you pass under you continue on a tight curve to the right and pass over the bridge (one lane-two way traffic).

Often I like images but less often do I say, "I wish I had taken that." Outstanding.

Noel,
Thanks for the HM and kind words. I have attached a "mostly unedited" color version of the mission church per your request. Ansel Adams shot here a wee bit before me.

I "window shop" cameras and lenses as a way to waste time. Recently, Amazon had a used KP for 900 usd. By that measure the deal you have (with grip) is good. The lack of KPs in the used market makes a meaningful price range impossible. I bought a Ks2 as a backup for my K70. It arrived with aperture block so it was returned. I immediately liked the ergonomics and was sad to see it go. As there were many similarities to the K70 I thought it a good 2nd camera. Bought the KP when it was 700 and to answer you question, absolutely no regrets. Is it a meaningful upgrade? I would think so. I believe you will get better images and the bells and whistles are convenient. I would add some weasel words. I shoot landscape and man-made stuff associated with it. The KP is fine if not outstanding. As you will see in all reviews the K3 III is the guy for wildlife and other action stuff. Get the tool that is appropriate for the job.

Prof in grad school was adamant that "Clear speaking leads to clear thinking." In her presence, you were extremely careful to use the proper word/term. Things are, of course, a tad more creative in the real world.

"Scots, wha hae. . . ." Kerrowdown wins. Note to Jumbleview, this is in The Painted Desert. Ain't it just like a Pentaxian to shoot B&W.

This appeared in the morning (US EDT) for $85. I would have not hesitated but for having a Rokinon 16mm. The positive reviews for these lens are IMO accurate.
