10 reasons I will not buy K new
Posted By Fenwoodian

Two main reason's I won't buy:

1. I prefer my newer Fuji X mirrorless bodies for my APS-C needs. They are small, have great ergonomics, can accept more adapted lenses than any DSLR, and they do good 4K video.
2. For my serious still images, I use my Pentax K-1's. I likely will never upgrade from them as they do everything that I need and then some. Minty low-mileage K-1's are regularly sold here in the market place for around $1,000 USD. I suspect the K-New will sell for hundreds of dollars more than that. Let's see, a minty used full-frame K-1 vs a more expensive APS-C K-new? That's an easy decision for me. The fabulous Pentax K-1 has spoiled me, I'll never look at another stills camera, not even a new Pentax one.

It's super easy to replace a boring/blown-out sky with "Sky Replace A.I." in Luminar 4....

Don't knock it til you try it. You absolutely can not tell the sky has been replaced.

My K-1's have been pretty much "bullet proof" since I bought them. I think that the K-1 is a very rugged camera, even in the heat.

Frankly, I worry more about damaging my lenses in the heat/sun than I do about my K-1 camera.

Pentax Lenses Falling Apart - Stripped Internal Screws

I have taken apart many lenses. All my screwdrivers are magnetized. Over the years of working on lenses, I've only run across a couple of lenses that had non-ferrous screws (maybe aluminum?). Their metal was very soft and they stripped easily, so I replaced them with steel screws.

If in the future you ever run into what you think might be inferior screws again, you might want to check to see if they respond to a magnet.

645D advantages over K3II?

The 645D has a CCD seonsor in it. The K3ii has CMOS. Some, like me, believe that colors are richer and more vibrant on a CCD sensor.

The 645 with have shallower DOF, and for a bokeholic like me that's a big plus too.

For my type of photography, I'll take a camera with a CCD sensor and shallower DOF any day.

I've had it with them, and have moved all of my business to Roberts Camera in Indianapolis. Much better and more responsive service! No kidding.

Being a former owner/creator /webmaster of 3 websites (I've sold them all) I believe that websites that are privately owned (I assume Adam owns PentaxForums.com) have every right to do with that website whatever they want (restrict/eliminate comments, modify/delete any content, restrict any/all visitors, terminate/sell the website). On one of my websites, I tired of the valueless comments that were being posted, so I deleted all existing comments and terminated the ability of visitors to my website to comment in the future. Adam has 100% control of the website, it's not a democracy nor do visitors have any rights. This website is private property and we are all here as a guests who must adhere to any and all rules that the website owner specifies..

However, with publicly owned websites (like Facebook, Google/YouTube), I believe that there may be legal requirements to adhere to the freedom of speech laws that apply in jurisdictions where that website can be accessed.

I just noticed that Adorama has Pentax O-ME53 Magnifying Eye Pieces on sale for just $20.95. I bought two of them for my K-1 and K-10D.

No sure how many they have left or how long the sale is good for.

Is the Pentax D FA Macro 100mm WR the best macro option out there for my K1?

You want "the best"? Check this link out (click on the PDF file).

I own two of these lenses and none of the many close-up/macro lenses I've owned over the years compare to it's sharpness and bokeh!

I use them regularly on my K-1 and K10D Pentax cameras. Here's a link to a photo I recently took with this lens on my K10D.

While this "Leica M39 mount" CRT Nikkor-O 55mm f/1.2 lens is expensive, it's worth the price in my opinion.

I Came Back To The K-1 And I'm Glad I Did!

I've owned Pentax K-1 cameras since they were first released. I own and shoot other brands too. Lately I've been stuck in a groove shooting only my Fuji, Nikon, and Sony cameras. It's been months since I've picked up my Pentax K-1 body.

Yesterday, I was having trouble getting acceptable results from my manual focus M39 Nikkor O 55mm f/1.2 CRT lens on my Fuji, Nikon and Sony bodies. Then I decided to pull out my Pentax K-1 and try this lens on the K-1. Well, this rare and exodic lens just sang on my K-1 body! I nailed focus much more often with the K-1's focus-peaking/IBIS/4x-magnification; and the images it made just looked better to my eye then what I was able to get from my non-Pentax bodies. Also, the K-1 has better ergonomics - it feels better in my hands, and the buttons/menus just work for me.

I guess one doesn't really appreciate how great the K-1 really is until you leave it for a while and then come back to it. While I intend to keep my other cameras for specialized applications (4k video, giant telephoto lenses, when weight is critical), when it comes to serious shooting with my best lenses when IQ is critical - I'm sticking with my Pentax K-1.

Do you prefer your Pentax K-1 to your other non-Pentax cameras? If so, why?

I recently sent some gear to Poland, and it is very delayed - tracking indicates it's disappeared.

I continue to ship with confidence within the continental USA; but because of recent hiccups sending outside of the USA, I will no longer ship anything internationally in the future. It's not just the shipping, but International requires me to go to my local post office. It's usually quite crowded and poorly ventilated - a cesspool of corona virus if I ever saw one.

I've shot dressage competition at the Olympic games.

Forget shooting from the stands. Shoot low angle shooting up at the horse. Be mindful of the background - it can be very distracting - choose a wider DOF that blurs background yet not so wide that the entire horse is not sharp . A bit of dust in the air adds a 3D-like effect.

Obviously, you can not usually use a flash; so underexpose the image a bit to darken the background, then dodge the horse/rider in post.

While the USPS does a great job overall, occasionally they have hickups. For example. Last month I ordered a rare bokeh lens from Germany. I arrived in NY, then went to North Carolina, then went to a couple of locations in Florida before finally finding it's way to me here in northern Wisconsin.

This new Pentax is $100 more expensive than the highly regarded Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4. I'm not going to buy this new Pentax lens, I'm keeping my adapted Zeiss Milvus 85/1.4 lens for use on my Pentax K-1 cameras.

I prefer the Zeiss 85 Milvus': rugged all metal build, silky manual focus and exaggerated focus throw, IQ, and 77mm filters (this Pentax takes 82mm filters).

I don't care if Samyang and all of the other lower-quality, manual-focus lens manufacturers permanently drop the K mount! Why???

I greatly prefer the overall IQ of older "easily adapted" : Olympus Zuiko OM, Contax Carl Zeiss C/Y, Canon FG, MOG, Fujinon EBC, Leica R, Voigtlander SL/SLII, Nikkor non-Ai/Ai/AIS, and yes, even some Pentax M42 and early K mount lenses to the rendering of the modern/low-quality/cheapo third party lenses. But that's just me....

Well that's news to me. I guess I should immediately sell all off the many Zeiss, Leica and Nikkor lenses I've adapted to K mount because my Pentax K-1 cameras "deserve Pentax lenses". ;)

Does anyone shoot video with their Pentax?

I've tried video on various Pentax cameras. When I was new to video, I guess that I was happy with them.

However, I no longer use Pentax cameras for my video tutorial videos. I've switched to the Fuji XE3 (terrific color and B&W shooting modes) for video these days. Mostly 4k. Once you've tried 4k video, there's no going back to 1080P.

With all of the cameras that I've used, an external microphone and pre-amp are required for high quality sound.

Why? Because the only lenses I have laying around that I don't use and can give away are manual focus vintage lenses. I'm not going to go out and buy new auto focus lenses for the grandkids to "maybe" use.

Plus, I believe that a great way to start with photography is to first master the basics of manual lenses and fully manual camera settings. Once they are mastered, then move up to auto everything gear and modes.

I currently own no modern auto-focus lenses. All of my lenses are film-era, manual-focus, primes from the last century. While I can afford the latest and greatest auto focus lenses, I still prefer to shoot manual-focus lenses. I'm an old guy who grew up manual focusing. Heck, I used to shoot birds in flight with manual focusing lenses.

I prefer the build, tactile feedback when focusing, the ruggedness, the bokeh, and the overall rendering of older manual-focus prime lenses. Also, it doesn't hurt that many fine old manual focus lenses are inexpensive. I use live-view with a 3X Zacuto viewfinder and actually nail focus with my manual focus lenses more often than I did when I had auto-focus lenses.

I have way too many 2005 - 2012 era digital camera bodies and was thinking of giving some of them with a few of my lesser used manual focus lenses to my grand-kids. They all have smartphones and sometimes use their built-in smartphone cameras.

I'm searching for something to tell them that would motivate them to want to give a real camera with a manual focus lens a serious try. While many real cameras have huge megapixels, the bodies I'm giving them will have only 10 - 14 megapixels (comparable to the resolution of their phones) - so increased resolution from a real camera isn't an incentive. Their smartphones can produce pseudo out of focus blurs, so I don't expect they'd get very excited about using fast manual focus lenses on a real camera to produce nice bokeh. Their smartphones are lighter, always with them, and smartphone photos can be immediately posted to the Internet without wasting time with post processing (these young people don't even have access to a laptop or a desktop computer).

So, why do you think a newer photographer would want to give a real camera with a manual focus lens a try? What short "elevator speech" would you tell a young smartphone generation person that might get them to give a real camera and manual focus lens a try?
