Using old SMC Pentax-A lenses with Pentax DSLR

I see lots of great advice so far. I went with pentax because of the availability of relatively inexpensive lenses. My photography skills improved sugnificantly when I discovered the Pentax-A lenses and used them with the K-50. Changing the focusing screen did help. But I did not change it on the K-3ii I now use, so it is helpful but not critical with all the aids others mentioned.

Id consider a used K-3 or or K-3ii if the budget allows. If you still have the LX and ME, selling one may offset the cost difference.

Enjoy!

Great work! And all the more impressive because December is not the month I would typically expect all the great flower shots.

Lines on 120 film negatives

I believe the film was machine processed. And I think the lines were visible on the negatives but I am not sure. I did have the owner of the shop look at it and they were going to wash and scan them again. I'll have to pick up the negatives to see for myself.

---------- Post added 01-08-18 at 10:00 PM ----------

The film is Ilford Delta 100 Professional Black and White film. I had mentioned to the owner of the shop that I'd love to see their complete developing process. My intent was to overcome my ignorance on the developing process. Now I am seeing how important that understanding actually is. The roll had a couple of shots that I'd love to have been able to work on in post.

Thanks Tony and Alex! I'll post an update once I learn anything more. And I'll try another lab just to eliminate the camera variable.

Lines on 120 film negatives

Hi All,

I am fairly new user of a Pentax 645Nii. I had some Ilford BW film developed a few weeks ago and the scanned images have vertical lines, not perfectly straight but the frame. The lines are not exactly straight but are very consistent and quite visible. They were rescanned by the local shop that does the developing but it made no difference. Any ideas on what could have caused the lines? More specifically, does this look like a camera issue, a user issue (something I did), or a developing/scanning issue?

At one point this wind blown fire was consuming 1 acre per second. I was about a half to three quarters of a mile from the hills when I took this shot. My house is a couple of miles away and unlikely to be in any danger. But the news keeps trickling in of friends and acquaintances whose houses have burned. More pics will follow in the morning light.

I am in for December but not sure what I will shoot. I flaked at the end of October while I was printing and framing a bunch of pictures (14) for a display at a coffee shop in Ojai and then recovering from the intensity of that preparation I took off November. Though I could post in many of the threads, without the pressure of the daily challenges, I shoot fewer shots and then don't post any.

I'll probably pick something for portraits in preparation for the holidays or a zoom to prepare for spontaneous shots of the granddaughters at holiday events.

Either one would be nice. I'd love to see the 12mm but since I am considering the the DFA28-105 if I don't go with a prime that would be one I'd lean toward.

Being sick, especially when so much is going on is no fun. Hope you get better to enjoy all the activities.

That is what I love about this challenge, life happens and knocks us out of the fun and challenging stuff like this challenge, and everyone is understanding and encouraging.

I changed lenses mid-stream. In my shooting yesterday I was not burdened with the low quality lens I had been singling. Out of yesterdays shooting two just hit Explore.

K-1 or 645n

DCShooter - I skipped ahead a bit in the amassing of 645 lenses, 6 of them and an extension tube.

All - I did purchase the 645n, but did it much more intelligently with the great input from everyone. It came down to what NZ_Ross described as the medium format itch. Plus the fact that my local camera shop processes a lot of 120 film. Mailing film away to be developed probably would have been a game changer for me. The deal came with the 645n, the Pentax-A 645 120mm F4, A 80-120mm F4.5, A 35mm F2.8, L.S. 75mm F2.8, L.S. 135mm F4, and FA 45-85, several film backs, and numerous filters, chords, and even a polaroid back.

Because of the varying opinions, all helpful, I was able to make my decision having thought through the options and now have no qualms. I did come to the realization that I have so very much to learn. So, having attained a level of confidence with my current digital cameras and SLRs, I am back to square one with the 645n. It should keep me busy for a while.

Thanks all!

K-1 or 645n

I would include my A 50 1.4 and M 28 2.8 in the quality level that would work well with the K-1. My A 135 2.8 broke but replacing that would help at the longer end. So in reality I would only need a good wide angle. Hmmmm...

---------- Post added 10-04-17 at 09:08 AM ----------

I do think both the K1 (or K1-ii 😁) and a 645_ are in my future. The itch for medium format grew after taking an MX with me to Spain in the summer and shooting some BW film.

So I will reduce the issue to one of sequencing rather than an A or B decision. If my wife likesbthe results of the first, the second may be easier to bear. And maybe not...

K-1 or 645n

I am at the decision point of whether to purchase a 645n with a wide range of lenses and accessories or purchase a K-1 without any additional lenses.

I currently have a K-3ii and film cameras. I have the DFA 28-105, numerous A and M primes and a couple DA limited lenses but no high quality full frame lenses. Landscape photography is my main reason for an upgrade at this point.

Any input?

I am in this month. MoNovember sounds like a good challenge.

Good point. I don't often compose my digital shots with monochrome in mind. But I know when I shoot BW film, my view of a scene is different - I could not tell you how exactly. So planning to shoot monochrome will build some new skills or, perhaps, apply old skills to new tools.

A work deadline on September 30 put a crimp in my posting the last week. Data submitted at 11:59 pm last night, so hopefully I'll be able to post a bit more regularly once I recover from the last week. I picked up an old lens, but new in the box, a couple of months ago, Quantaray MC Auto Zoom 70-210mm F4.0-5.6 Macro. It is an A lens so that should be fun. It was very inexpensive and certainly not a quality lens so we'll see if I can find its sweet spot. After shooting the DA 70 Limited in September, it will be a challenge to use.

Welcome! This group really is a great way to get familiar with a lens. I look forward to seeing how your new old lens works for you.

Since I always forget to come to this thread when I post late at night, I rarely see the themes before I take my shot. I guess I could actually set a reminder but that would be too logical. So now it is late and I don't have a shot so we'll see what I come up with.

My Daily and Single In shots from Monday were both Explored. They were the first I have had explored. I'd never really looked closely at the instructions until recently. I had been uploading most of my photos at the max resolution required here, 1024px on the long edge, and not the 1600px required . Not that it would have made a whole lot of difference, but ...

Catching up on the thread and seeing lots of lenses that I really need to try. :)

I would not have thought of this.

I am also thinking through my kit for late June and the first half of July in Spain. For the Single In I may start with a Sears Auto 135 2.8. But not sure yet - and today is the day to decide.

---------- Post added 06-01-17 at 08:06 AM ----------

You can't go wrong with the A 50 1.4 but the challenge of the others may make it a great learning experience. I love finding the sweet spot - when I do find the sweet spot - of the lenses.

Just throw it in the diaper bag, you'll just think it is a few extra diapers. Also, I don't make it to this thread to comment on your pictures, so wanted you to know the recent baby picture was precious, well captured.

Indecision, indecision... I am right there with you.

I flaked out for most of April. I apologize for not commenting on some of the great shots I glanced at during April. After a couple thousand pictures in Equador and the Galapagos, I ran out of steam, to say nothing of time following vacation and two trips to see kids/grandkids took two of the weekends. Life is a bit quieter now. So, I am back in for May. Not sure on my lens, perhaps the Pentax-A 50 1.4 or perhaps a more structured approach to the D-FA 28-105, which I have had on my camera all month. A few hours left to make the final decision. I'd better get some shots with all of the candidates quickly for a little insurance.

So sorry to hear about your dad. Hope his infection clears up quickly. and that you are able to get some rest.

On really bad days when planning a shot would not happen, just getting a shot of anything somehow feels productive.

I flaked on the last part of March due to work though I did get shots with the sigma 10-20 for most of the last part of the month, just no time to post.

I get the D-FA 28-105 in time for vacation so that is what I will be shooting. But it is unlikely that I will be able to post the same day I shoot for the next 8 days. The student tour my wife leads each year, usually Europe but this year Quito Equador and the Galapagos Islands, is in full swing. I'll post what I can of the hundreds of shots I am likely to take per day. After the 9th it should be more regular.

Welcome to the forum Ian. I look forward to your contributions.

After you absorb the threads aslyfox shared, the Single In [month] challenge is a great way to hone your skills. Using a single lens for a month, you post one picture a day - that is the goal anyway. I've learned alot about how to get good photos out of mediocre or even poor quality lenses and what the strengths of my better lenses are.
The instructions are here, Single In March 2017 - PentaxForums.com

The photos for March are here: Monthly Photo Challenges - PentaxForums.com

Enjoy!
