Des - I am furiously jealous with 1. how you even spot the variety of birds you do (especially the small ones) and 2: that you manage to get such great shots of them (again, especially of the little ones!!!)

Next time I am in Melbourne, gonna try and visit Gippsland. My sister and her family once lived in Newborough (near Morwell) and Moe. Long time since I was around there.

Have a very long-time friend in Melbourne (close friends since 1959) who is also a keen photograph (a la Nikon persuasion at the moment; think he once owned a Hasselblad) and we have promised each other a couple of photography hikes together next time I am down.

EDIT: now realise I was responding to a posting nearly 2 yrs old. No matter - comments still apply.

What a clever composition, Bruce. The leaf looks like it is hanging in space - a lone living thing lost in the cosmos!!

Love it.

Thagomizer: you have very clearly shown what that lens "can do". All those shots have great clarity.

I have managed to get myself confused re posting and linking.

In some posts, I have managed to create a hyperlink directly to the image in my post: in others, I only seem to be able to put the image(s) in, and then create a hyperlink from a text entry in my post. I cannot work out how I managed to create the link to work directly from the image, so that the mouse becomes a hand shape over the image, and a click on the image leads to the original in my Onedrive collection.

EDIT: OK, I figured it out!!

Just bought the kp 3 weeks ago.

Bought the 100mm Macro 3 weeks before that - for use on my 2nd hand K50

Bought the 16-85mm and the 55-300mm PLM with the the KP - the 55-300 just about lives on the camera. But sunny weather is back (after almost 2 full weeks of overcast and/or rainy days), so gotta get off my butt, get to some local nature reserve or botanical gardens, and give the camera and all 3 new lenses a workout.

Love having brand new modern AF lenses, after virtually making do with some old legacy Pentax M series film lenses on the K50.

Thanks for that, Sharky. I had already found this one, and it looks astonishing - but it also looks as if it is only Windows or Mac, but as I said, after an android app

Angerdan, thanks - I hadn't found that one in my searches, but took a quick look, and will go back and study it more fully. That spreadsheet matrix is a great idea!!!

Thanks Adam - gives me motivation to explore Image Sync in greater detail.

I have said this once or twice before in other threads, but I'll say it again: the level of willing sharing of expertise in this Forum is outstanding!

Here is my go at a couple of macro shots on my brand new KP and (also brand new) 55-300mm PLM. Was lucky with the fly catch - was actually photography another spider a metre away when I caught a motion in my peripheral vision, and saw this spider moving to the new catch in its web.

Did this project ever go Android?
And quickly skimming through it, a little confused as to whether it works via wifi, usb, or both??

Recently bought a KP, and my main need is to trigger the shutter without touching the camera while in tripod mount mode. Upgraded from a K50 to KP. Had a Vello(JJC?) pistol grip with 2.5mm rca cable, but the camera end does not fit the KP - ? needs 3.5mm plug, I think?

Am trying to purchase a cable, but meanwhile, looking to use my android smart phone. Have confirmed I can trigger the shutter using the official Ricoh Image Sync app in the (android) play store, but wondering if there are any other alternatives?

Have done a few searches throughout the forum, but maybe someone with more experience can save me time with some to-the-point suggestions?

Is it recommended to use both mirror lock and timer delay for extreme close-up macro and telephoto work, and is this possible with any app - either doing so manually before starting the app, or doing it from within the app?

Only got back into photography in October 2018 with a second-hand K50, after 35yrs of leaving my old film gear (Pentax ME and assorted lens) in an aluminum camera case!!, so still trying to build up an overall mental picture of the ins and outs of digital photography.

Not totally illiterate digitally: have used a universal remote andoid app which has allowed me to to control my hifi gear, and even control playing of chosen albums/tracks for my blu-ray player to play through my receiver. (but not into programming).

It may well be I am wasting everyone's time here by not giving the Ricoh app a full tryout - if so, am quite happy for someone to tell me so, and to tell me to just get on with it!!!

Thanks in advance for any comments or suggestions.

Yeah guys - pulled the trigger on Thursday 20/6/19 and THE PACKAGE arrived am on Tuesday 25/6/19: Pentax KP body (black); Pentax 16-85mm zoom; 55-300mm PLM zoom.

And yeah, you only get the standard small grip here in Oz - but that's okay, I'm a bit of a runt (and at 75 shrinking rapidly!!) with small hands.

Over the moon. Went bananas (Queenslander) taking shots almost as soon as I got everything out of its box!! The autofocus on the 55-300mm PLM is so quiet, and FAST.

If you are interested, have posted first posted sample pics here:

Well folks, took delivery of my new upgrade package (from K50 with mainly legacy 1970s film lenses) 3 days ago.

A brand new Pentax KP black body;

the 16-85mm zoom,

the 55-300mm PLM zoom.

Here are a few early shots with the 55-300mm (man, the autofocus on this is sooooo silent, and very quick);

Many of these are crops of the original: if you are interested in seeing original DNG Raw files click HERE

Yes, you are right about the learning curve. I was still learning all the finer details of digital photography after buying my K50 in October 2017, after not using a camera since the early 1980s film days of Pentax K2 and Pentax ME.

It took 3 or 4 tries on the new KP before changed it from shooting JPEG to shooting RAW (.DNG) - with a half-way step of shooting both!!

You were right, carlb, it was a long weekend. But it was worth it.

The whole package arrived around 10:00am Tuesday. Man - this 75 yr old was like a 5 year old on Christmas Morning!!!!

Megapixelmk: you were also right: the 55-300 is amazing: cannot hear it focusing, and sometimes I find myself realising I am waiting for it to focus, when it already has. Don't know why Pentax has a reputation for slow autofocus - the 55-300 PLM seems near instantaneous! And sharp! And such a great minimum focusing distance. And yeah, have to keep remembering that zoom release button, just like you said.

Here are a couple of my first shots with the 55-300mm:
Attachment 456312

Attachment 456313

The 16-85mm is also very sharp and quiet, and such a useful range - it sure beats the lowly 18-55mm kit lens that came with my second-hand K50 in every way.

Here are early tests on both ends of its focal range, and its near-macro ability:

Attachment 456314
Attachment 456315

Attachment 456316

The last is a crop of the original.

Thanks all for the encouragement, and esp carlb who alerted me to the eofy discounts in time.

Thanks Des.

Yeh, could have done with a little more DOF in the second picture - would have got more of the ants in sharper focus. shot at F7 - should have gone up to F16 maybe.

Was having intermittent probs with the shutter locking up - was using a Vello pistol grip with cable as below

May have been occasionally knocking the Lock button with my fingers!!

And the last shot definitely need a higher F stop than the F5.

Need to train myself to pay more attention to these issues for each photograph - maybe even take multiple shots with different F stops to give myself a better chance of ending up with the result I want.

Will be going back to this friend's garden with that in mind.

Ho, Megapixelmk - you have got me there!!! Never gave that a thought, but a good point.

Rather than just change the K50 to KP, maybe K2 to K50 to KP? But that leaves out the Pentax ME (which I still own!!).

Something to keep my mind occupied with while wait impatiently for my new gear!!!

Thanks, Sunman. And just a couple of weeks ago, I had also bought a new Pentax D FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR lens for a good deal. So when my new order arrives, I will have a nice new KP with 3 modern lenses to add to my collection of legacy 1970's film lenses.

Need to improve my concentration and technique when taking pics. Took a stack of pics in a friend's garden with my K50 and the new 100mm macro, the bulk of which were with the camera on a tripod. Realized later that I hadn't shut down the shake reduction function. And while I did use aperture priority, and got a few really sharp pics, in some cases I can now see that I should have shut down even more.

It is an on-going process!!

Mega: how did you go?

Hmmm. Both Pentax.com.au (Ricoh) and C R Kennedy are showing stock of the KP body (black). But I have received advice from DCXpert that they do not expect to have stock until next month.

Very frustrating - fighting temptation to say what the hell, and buy the KP at full price from Kennedy, and not wait any longer for a possible discount. Grrrrr!
