All my image where shot with DA 14mm. I figured just about everyone else would be shoot with long lenses, so I'd challenge myself with a wide angle. It took a bit of scouting to find a good position, but once found, I was set. Almost too set.

Couple more orchids out in flower. Both have flowers around 15mm. Still shooting with the Macro 100mm on manual.

Oh, recognising you was easy, what with self portraits in your flickr stream, the vague smell of KFC wafting off your person...

I do have a habit of remembering faces that was useful for work, so that might have helped!

Good one Blue, I really like that control of the area in focus. Drives me nuts trying to shoot on cloudy days to get the same effect. Might have to buy an ND filter or two.

This image was the result of the office clean up! Being a scrounger by nature I watched for anything odd being thrown away. There was a bag in a bin with a badge belonging to an organisation that preceded mine by several iterations. Hauled it out and found six lovingly packed and labeled Pentax M lenses.

"They are not digital lenses." I was told.

Well they are all back in service, this was my first outing with a Pentax M 100mm macro. I'm sure it has done sterling work in the past doing just this task. There was a breeze blowing on the day, and I do not, as yet, own a plamp!

Indeed the circles I see are rainbows as described. I'll have to do some neck exercise work to hold my K10D and that 14mm as a helmet mount!

I'm off to warmer climes flying next month, will see if I can wing mount the lens.

190XPROB tripod droop

No worries!
Your idea sounds interesting.
For what it is worth, I've just rechecked the tripod, and there is something going on inside the clamping device. Depending on how I hold the tripod (and my tongue) the clamp will occasionally lock the column solid. Time for a visit to the shop I think.

No worries,

You guys bring us hints of a spring to come every winter here, so I appreciate the chance to offer something unusual and rare from down here. I'm fortunate to have such diversity in orchids so close by, and a job that takes me searching for the same.

I'll endeavor to get some other flower stuff soon.

Ok, I've had a go at way more than finger tight.

1. When set vertically, the clamp thread feels smooth, and just more than finger tight has the column clamped immovable. No rotation and no creep. I reckon I could sit on the thing and it would not move.

2. Set horizontally the clamp thread feels rough to turn. At way more than finger tight, the grip on the clamp screw is bending under pressure. Column can be slid with a light push with one finger. Still has 10 degrees of slop.

I'd apply a pair of footys (plumbers wrench) but I secretly suspect that a fine piece of Italian engineering should not need such an accessory to make it clamp.

I've had a good look at the clamp design, and cannot see why it will not hold in horizontal.

G'day all,

I have an issue (or a feature) with my 190 with the centre column in horizontal mode. The column will rotate through about ten degrees with the clamp done up at a touch more than finger tight. If less than horizontal the column slides slowly through the clamp.

I have a K10D with a Viv 105mm macro on the end, surely that is not overloading the tripod?

Anyone else have a similar experience?

From memory it was taken the day or so after my DA14mm arrived in the mail. I'm not sure if the image would benefit from some tweaking in LR to pull out the underexposed road. Funny enough I have not seen a sun halo since.

With reference to rainbows, I've seen a fair few rainbow halos when above light cloud in the hang glider. And, no, I have not taken up the K10D with the 14mm to try get handheld shots!

It's spring here in the southern hemisphere, and for the first time since the mid nineties we have had winter rains that we used get for the last century. All around the parched forests have been springing back to life, watercourses dry for a decade once again have water and life.

The forests here full of tiny flowers, the area some 300 species of orchids, mostly tiny. To set the scene, I found an area of orchids known as greenhoods, carpeting the forest floor. For the last ten years it would have been noteworthy to find a clump of fifty. This year is different.

In amongst the vast carpets of greenhoods, small lilies reach for the sun.

Early Nancy

This is just the first flush of orchids, the coming months will see scores more erupt. Happy to post a few more if you are interested. All of these were shot with a DA14mm in very close focus mode!

The area has had quite some fire put through it over the last three years. many of the orchids only flower after fire, so that and the rains have made a real treat for tiny flower fanciers! So much so I'm off out on Friday to get some reference photographs of an orchid seen for the first time since 1983.

G'day all,
(Good shots John.)

Been out shooting at ground level, this is Early Nancy, a native wildflower. Shot with a DA14mm with the flower just about touching the lens.

Carl,
It got to 45 out my way. We even had a couple of lightning strikes in the arvo. Thankfully a bit of rain had put both out. Pretty quiet otherwise. (no pyros)
