Extension tubes without aperture ring question

OK well I feel dumb. I didn't need to try it after reading torashi's comment. When the lens didn't have an aperture ring and I saw the SDM contacts, I assumed that the aperture was controlled electronically. However, there's still a lever on the lens with a return spring so my idea is pointless. Thanks for the help everyone!

Extension tubes without aperture ring question

The idea is to lock the aperture at what it was set at when I removed it since nothing is able to change it after the fact... so the first two paragraphs of your reply are completely expected and all fine. I have new lenses on old cameras and old lenses on new cameras and I'm comfortable with the ins and outs of all that. I have no intention of controlling the aperture while it's mounted on the tubes. My tubes don't pass any connections and no aperture lever and no ring on the lens. I dug around and found I do have a cheaper camera and lens I could give it a go on so I'll try that tomorrow unless people start screaming no no no. If I remember right, a Canon or Nikon guy I talked to years ago did this, but I don't know about Pentax.

Extension tubes without aperture ring question

On rare occasions, I'm wanting to use manual tubes on a lens with electronic aperture control. Are there any risks of breaking anything and would it work if I do this?

-lens is mounted directly to camera (no tubes)
-set desired aperture with the camera on
-remove the lens while holding the DoF preview button
-turn off camera
-mount tubes and lens
-turn on camera
-shoot at the previously set aperture only. repeat procedure from first step to use a different aperture.

The camera is a K-1 if that matters. I think I remember reading about this before, but wasn't having any luck finding it with searches. And yes I know it's a kind of silly thing to do... for as infrequent as I'd use this technique, the hassle doesn't bother me if it works and no risk of shorting anything, etc. Thanks.

For Sale - Sold: Sigma 24mm Super Wide II AF 2.8 - hard to find autofocus version, .18m min focus!

Hi. I have one person who messaged earlier and I just replied to them and said I would hold it for them today. I'll let you know what happens there. I don't have the original hood, but a combination of a step-up ring and a wide metal hood would work well or those vintage shallow wide angle rubber hoods look cool too. There is a specific US seller on eBay, "heavystar", that has the best selection of wide metal hoods in my opinion.

Thanks for the bump! Yeah I'd love to see this go to a good home :) it deserves to be used more than I have been lately

Item for Sale
Sigma 24mm Super Wide II AF 2.8 - hard to find autofocus version, .18m min focus!

Asking Price
180.00 USD

Item Location
Kansas City, MO (United States)

Item Description
An awesome lens in great condition. Clean and clear optics. Focus ring is smooth and useable for manual focusing too. I believe it is the only compact 24mm lens (52mm filter thread) with autofocus in Pentax mount. The close focusing down to .18 meters is my favorite part...it can facilitate some really interesting compositions. Compatible with full frame and APSC and has the A setting so it works with all Pentax features with metering, flash, etc.

Focus Shift

Interesting. Yeah, I wouldn't want to buy something like that. I guess you could adapt to it over time, but why. The only similar lenses I've used enough to comment would be the DA* 55mm 1.4 and an old 75-200 3.8 on full frame and I didn't have any issues shooting people, but that's a sample size of 1. I agree. That would be a valuable metric to test in lens reviews. On these forums, Pentax has a reputation for being more photographer-friendly and Canon has a reputation for getting better numbers in tests if you spend a lot more $$. So maybe it's true ;)

Focus Shift

Yes you're talking conceptually which might better directly answer the OPs question. I was answering in relation to what the final image looks like. If your autofocus is backfocusing 1 meter let's say (or your manual focus was off) and then the focus is shifting back another meter because the aperture changed vs what you focused with, that's more noticeable than only missing focus by a meter with no focus shift or being spot on with focus and the focus shifting 1 meter. In this crude example, 2 meters off is worse than 1 meter off. If your depth of field is a touch over one meter, then you wouldn't notice any focus shift without specifically testing for it. The roundabout point I was making is you shouldn't get overly concerned about focus shift because most lenses will accommodate for any focus shift with the resulting increase in depth of field with the narrower aperture. So maybe a more specific question so I can be educated, how many lenses in typical shooting scenarios (people, places, events...let's not argue about what typical means :) ) would be unusable due to focus shift if the initial focus was perfect? My assumption was none. Yes, I know your initial focus could be off one direction and your focus shifts the other direction... but being spot on with your focus is obviously the best place to start to reduce problems.

I haven't run into trouble yet. Supposedly, minor/moderate focus shift is common but if the autofocus is accurate wide open and you focus on the right spot, it's never a problem in normal shooting conditions. About the only times it would be a problem is if the autofocus needs calibrated or the lens is defective. Maybe there would be extreme circumstances where you could coax a working lens into the issue too.

Friendly bump. It's a nice lens if you're looking for something high quality, compact, and light weight. It's the only lens that fits the bill in Pentax mount that goes down to 24mm on full frame. Price dropped to $225. Looks like I forgot to edit the last price drop, woops. Get it while you can :)

Item Description
Mint condition Sigma 24-60. Looks like new and these are getting hard to find. I've used it on a K-1 and it takes great pics at all settings. The reason I'm selling it and the one major flaw is it consistently backfocuses at longer focal lengths at f2.8. On APSC, this might not be much of a problem especially combined with an AF adjustment. It would be fine for anything stopped down a bit or something that isn't too close to the camera as well. At $100, it's a hell of a lens for manual focus only if you went that route too. It's pretty much parfocal as far as I can tell.

Ki Mark ii and 128gb memory card problem
Posted By scottDee

For future reference, 128GB cards should be fine in your camera so I wouldn't worry about purchasing 128GB next time. I have 128GB "Lexar Professional 1000x" on my K1 without issue. I'd still try to exchange the cards if it's within the return period. Some devices have better error handling than others or better compatibility so it gets tough to conclusively prove what is or is not causing the problem. If either the camera or card is within the warranty period, it might be worthwhile troubleshooting because worst case scenario, you wouldn't want to be stuck with a faulty expensive camera. It probably isn't that from what you describe though. Good luck and happy shooting.

It shuts off while writing to the card in the camera right? On day two, the card had been formatted by the camera and it hadn't been inserted into anything else between then and the camera shutting off?

I'd have to guess bad card. You could try the suspect card in another camera or run a diagnostic utility against it on your computer. You could upgrade firmware on your camera to the latest if it isn't already.

For Sale - Sold: Samsung ECX 1 35mm Point & Shoot Film Camera - Coolest camera ever :)

It's a Porsche designed camera and they put a legit zoom lens in it designed by Schneider-Kreuznach 38-140mm. It was $360 in 1994 dollars when it came out. In my opinion, some useful modes not frequently found in other film point and shoots: continuous shooting, multiple exposures on one frame (as many as you want), interval shooting (up to 60 min), bulb, exposure comp (this one is big because most others I've had to focus on something at a similar distance that has more or less light to achieve this), single and multi-beam AF, snap shooting mode is great for street photography (1.3-5m in focus @ 38mm), manual focus by +/- distance selection, self-timer, two-shot self-timer, 2 sec shutter delay release for low light if you're caught with the wrong film speed, a remote control is available for it, lock infinity focus, and some others. It's a fairly long list...but those are the ones that would be useful to me anyway. Definitely a neat camera. My only gripe with it is the viewfinder is pretty small. My favorite feature is the smiles you get with it around your neck :D

Pics are of actual items. Three available at the time of listing. They all work well and are in excellent condition. I have one or two copies of the manual as well. This was a very expensive camera when it was released in the 90s. It has some neat modes and some are very useful that are hard to find on a film point and shoot. This would be cool for a tourist costume as well haha. I love the look of these.

Rare Lens MIR-1A 2.8/37A M42 f2.8 37mm Russia Flektogon. This is the close focusing version that goes down to .24m. This version is superior to the more common MIR-1B and MIR-1V. The rings don't turn quite as smoothly as when it was new, but still fine overall. It's in great condition for its age. Optics are perfect. Hard to come by and a treat to shoot with.

Price dropped to $245 obo. It is a really great lens. The shots with this one do stand out. I think it's better resolution and contrast than a lot of other lenses. On full-frame, there's some subtle vignetting which I think adds to the image. Lightweight, compact, and the build quality is surprisingly good. You just don't see many bad copies of this lens which says a lot.

New Old Stock Sigma 28-70mm F2.8-4 UC AF Pentax

Asking Price

Item Description
I purchased this new old stock. I opened the box to inspect it and try it out on a K1. It's a surprisingly great lens with great image quality. F2.8 from ~28-30mm, F3.5 from ~31mm to 50mm, F4 from ~51mm to 70mm. Optics and cosmetics are of course perfect. I wasn't impressed using the manual focus ring, but it does appear to be basically parfocal. Autofocus is blazing quick! It has a smart, compact design with the built-in hood and reverse zoom. Reminiscent of the old Canon 24-70 2.8. A rare find in new condition, this is one of the best bang for your buck options for an all-around Pentax zoom.
