Shutter shock format dilemma

The Pentax Q has leaf shutter lenses :) Now we just need a 50MP - 100MP model in the Q line-up...

No, seriously, I had hoped to see a MF camera with leaf shutter lenses from Fuji or Hasselblad. That hasn't happened, perhaps that could be a niche for Pentax?

I tested my K-1 a while back just by eye-balling the results. My test showed that speeds from 1/90s to 1/180s are to be avoided. I suspect that there could be sample variations.

The test came about because I was baffled that 70% of my images from a trip to Lofoten had to be discarded due to being unsharp. It turned out that they were all shot at 1/125s.

All There is to Know About Pentax & LV Electronic Shutter

It would also be of interest to know the time it takes for the full exposure to be captured (i.e. time needed to record all pixels). It is thought to be in the order of 1/15 s or so even when the shutter time Tv is set to a faster value. Which again makes handheld use of ES subject to distortion from camera movement and moving objects at all shutter speeds.

@leonine, if you haven't done so already I'd recommend that you read our K-1 II vs. K-1 review. That should give you an indication of whether or not dynamic pixel shift and higher ISO are of value to your way of shooting.

The K-1 with a 450 mm lens has more reach than the 645Z with 400mm. Just as the KP will have even more reach with the 450mm.

The difference between the K-1 and the K-1 II is marginal. I myself prefer the K-1 "classic" - for one thing the battery lasts longer.

The 36MP resolution allows for tight cropping if needed.

Avoid shutter speeds with the K-1 or K-1 II in the range 1/90s - 1/180s due to blur introduced by shutter vibration. Most/all FF camreas of any brand seems to suffer from this. An APS-C body doesn't exhibit this issue (at least it isn't at a noticable level).

Given your requirements for battery life and quick wake up from sleep a K-5 or K-3 might be the better option for you. My K-3 easily lasts all day without being turned off. I just let it go to sleep after a set time.

Can film SLR split-image focusing screen systems go haywire? If so how & what then?
Posted By Ole
Replies: 15

As you mentioned yourself it could be a question of the shims which are used to adjust the position of the focusing screen. If the screens are user-exchangeable, then a do-it-yourself fix is possible, otherwise a repair shop can do it. Or perhaps the focusing screen has been put in upside down?

It could perhaps also be that the mirror on the bad copy isn't positioned in the required 45 degree angle due to worn (or missing) components such as the stops in the walls of the mirror box.
