There was a famous photographer by the name of Ansel Adams who is counted among the greatest photographers of all time. He was not only a great photographer but a pioneer in post processing. In his time this was of course all done in the darkroom and was a lot more complicated and time consuming.

There is also a famous quote from this very photographer: „You don’t take a photograph, you make it.“ As others stated before an image is not created by pressing the shutter. That is just the first step. The image the photographer had in mind is being created in post processing. But that of course doesn’t mean you can take any photograph and turn it into a masterpiece in processing. You have to be a good photographer to turn a good picture into a great picture. Just like Adams did many years ago in the analogue times.

Sony a9 II announced

I don’t get all this complaining about not enough megapixels. No matter what camera is being announced and no matter on what photography rumor/tech site there is always someone who thinks the new model doesn’t have enough megapixels. I guess at least 99% of all pictures taken with A9 cameras are either printed in magazines and newspapers or published online because that is the market for this camera. And for this market which this camera is built for 24MP is more than enough. I guess to most pros that are using the A9 a new sensor with 42 instead of 24 megapixels wouldn’t be an improvement but even a disadvantage because of much more demanding and time consuming post processing and file storing. The right tool for the right purpose. There are people that need more megapixels but there are other cameras made for them.

The page is well made. Only thing in terms of your page is that I get a 404 error when clicking on the „view more pictures“ button on the home page. I also like your pictures in terms of composition and ideas.

But something you should really work on is color. Your whitebalance is all over the place. Try viewing all your pictures from one wedding in a grid view and you will see what I mean. And look especially at the skintones. Some pictures have a strange yellow/greenish cast to them. You need to be more consistent with your color grading. People want to know what they get when they book you for their wedding.

Sharpening in Photoshop

There is a different technique for sharpening in Photoshop that I found to be much superior to unsharp masking. It’s called high pass sharpening. If you go to YouTube and search for „photoshop high pass sharpening“ you will find lots of tutorials on this technique. For me it really was a game changer.

Camera for beginner - thoughts?

Wow that is a lot of input to wake up to. Thank you all for your answers. Many interesting thoughts to help me out with.

I talked to her a little a few days ago and she seems to be very serious about learning photography. Her father is a professional photographer but unfortunately he lives in a different city now and has no interest to stay in contact. So there has been more contact with photography in the past than just her using her phone.

She is in fact not the typical thirteen year old teenager who wants to look cool.

That is of course true when you already know a bit about photography. But when I was learning photography crop was quite confusing to me because in all the literature and all the video tutorials people were talking about the classic 35mm focal lengths and not about APS-C equivalents or angle of view. That’s part of the reason I considered a full frame camera.

Some seem to still be confused about crop. I see no other reason why someone would recommend an APS-C camera with a 50mm as a single cam/lens combo for a beginner.

Good thought. Didn’t consider that before. But anything that makes this possible with either bluetooth or wifi would probably be much newer and thus too expensive.

So since she seems to be very serious about it I thought about giving her a serious tool. That is why I didn't consider a point and shoot or bridge camera. The weight is of course something I thought about for quite a while. I will have her try out my K-1 and my other neighbors K-r. I still consider APS-C to be a viable option even though i.e. a K-5 is only 60 grams less then the original 5D. But of course there are lighter (cheaper) APS-C options as well. But I would definitely pair it with a prime for said reasons (reducing to better learn). I also remember that I wondered why my K200D gave me soft, uninteresting pictures until the point when I swapped the horrible kit zoom for a good lens.

So for now I guess I will have her try out different cameras and see what she likes and don’t likes and talk to her a little more to see what is important to her. But any more input from you is of course very appreciated.

Camera for beginner - thoughts?

Hey folks, I have a thirteen years old girl in my neighborhood who wants to get into photography and her mum asked me for a camera recommendation. She has a budget of around 200-300€. My thought was to recommend getting a Canon 5D MK I that is still highly regarded for its pixie dust as we Pentaxians would call it plus a 50mm F1.8.

My thought behind this was that coming from a smartphone as her only camera I want her to have a camera that gives her that wow when looking at the pictures, that doesn’t make learning photography more complicated by having to learn about crop factors and that will be a good basis to build upon. I want her to be excited about photography right from the start. Also starting with a prime is something I would not only recommend to her but to every beginner to make it simpler and more challenging at the same time. Simpler by taking one variable out of the whole process to make her concentrate on composition and exposure and more challenging because she has to think and move more to get a good picture which helps in the whole learning process.

A friend of mine had the objection that a 5D might be overkill especially considering the weight for a 13 years old girl. Which could make her leave the camera at home more often. Another option would then of course be an older APS-C Pentax with the 35mm F2.4

What’s are your thoughts on this? I need some input and maybe hear about things I haven’t considered yet.

I have a generic 49mm screw in hood that’s 20mm deep and made out of metal that I use on my F 50 1.7. It cost me ten bucks including a lens cap that clips into the hood. Works like a charm.

Yes it’s Nikon. Besides the tab that Lowell mentioned there is no notch for the locking pin where it should be for K mount.

How to say DSLR in German?

DSLR should be a known term. Alternatively you could say Spiegelreflexkamera which should make clear what you want to bring. Bringing a camera shouldn’t be a problem (especially in the Dritte Liga) as long as it’s not looking like you shoot commercially like you would with a Canon 1DX with a big white telezoom.

The beauty about this lens is it’s size and weight. The XS is hardly bigger than a mount cap and weights next to nothing. Releasing it with a faster aperture would make it much bigger and heavier. Also because the lens elements are few and lightweight it has probably the fastest autofocus of any screwdrive lens out there.

Nikon Dropping 1/3 of their DSLR line-up in move to Mirrorless

This is great news for Pentax! I hope Canon will do the same so that at some point Pentax will be the best or even the only choice left for entry level DSLR. I think it was pretty wise by Ricoh to not jump into the mirrorless war and stick to DSLR. They don’t have the resources for a mirrorless system and are a niche brand anyway. There will always be people who prefer the mirror and my hope is that at some point Pentax will be the only choice left for those.

One K-Mount PRIME to rule them all 2019

For me it’s definitely the Pentax-F 50mm F1.7 on my K-1. It’s very light, sharp, fast, has very quick reliable autofocus and I simply adore the color rendition and that gorgeous 80s look of the F series lenses.

The only other option would be the HD FA 35mm F2 which is a little gem on it’s own and would probably be more versatile than a 50mm.

There is a profile for the new HD version of that lens. Since they are almost identical except for the coating it should work just fine.
