Hi all,

I am selling my whole 645Z kit on now. A while back a had an accident and caused damage to my hand and fingers so I am moving on to a lighter kit that will be easier to hold.

I have already sold one of my 645Z bodies and this one is my backup. Shutter count of 2500 confirmed from one of my latest RAW images from the body.

The body is in great condition with a few minor wear marks on each bottom corner of the LCD screen. Body comes with two RRS quick release plates as shown. Also comes with and IR remote and spare battery.

Would prefer to sell as a whole kit if possible but happy to split.

Pricing for the body and lenses are as follows:

645z Body with DFA55 Lens: $3200 USD

D-FA 645 35mm f/3.5 (excellent condition) $1000 USD

FA 645 300mm f/5.6 (mint condition) $350 USD

FA 645 80-160mm $150 USD

FA 645 150mm f/2.8 $200 USD

Whole Kit for $4500 USD

I think I have priced this to sell quickly, based on what I have seen online.

Buyer pays for shipping and any insurance worldwide. Please PM me for any details.

Youíll find pretty much most Pentax MF sales are those leaving the system, especially over the last 3 years.

You canít say that somebody purchasing a used 645D and a bunch of used FA lenses is somehow doing anything for the brand.

I am not blaming anybody for not purchasing new, Iím just saying that if somebody does purchase their whole system used, then they might want to re-think whether their opinion actually has weight. There are plenty of people out there with money like Foamberg who if Pentax had the goods they would re-invest in new gear. Same goes for all the money being dropped on Fuji MF systems, if the product is good then people will invest.

The reality here which is the whole topic of this forum thread is that Pentax has literally done nothing with the system for 5 years, yes 5 whole years.

You say that, but............

Most people on this forum for the 645 system have never purchased anything new in their 645 kit, only used and they are typically the most vocal ones about supporting Pentax. However they have never actually contributed a single cent to Pentaxsí bottom line by purchasing an entire value 645 kit used.

Lightroom Alternative

The 645z is an old camera now, so why donít you just pick up an old non-subscription copy of Lightroom to load your 645z images into then export them as TIF files to use in your chosen software.

You can still load camera profiles into the old versions of Lightroom for raw processing of the 645z files.

If you donít shoot much with it then this is the best way in my view.

I will test the AF later and report back but I don’t have any issue.

The main problem with the 3 new lenses is they still have a manual aperture lever, so they still are sitting in the past there.

I had the 28-45 and replaced it with the new DFA 35mm and although it’s a remake of the old FA 35, it’s as good if not better than the 28-45 because it has no field curvature like the zoom does, plus it’s very sharp.

I did some damage to one of my fingers on my right hand so needed to lighten the camera weight so the zoom had to go. I’m very pleased with the new prime.

If they did the same with the 45-85 and 80-160 as they did the 35 then they should be great. I’m happy for them to keep the aperture ring so that they can be used on other cameras like the K-1 and Canon DSLR as a backup body.

I had not seen this. Itís more promising.

Perhaps the delay in the two new zooms was to make them D-FA rather than DA so that they could be used on a full frame 645 sensor.

A larger 645 sensor would give them the advantage they need while still having backwards support for those with DA lenses like the 28-45mm.

Iím not asking for mirrorless here. Iím saying that thereís times that would benefit from an electronic finder for framing and fine focus when sun/glare is affecting the lcd screen.

Something clip-on would be fine. If that means the body is a mirrorless version of the 645z then thatís fine too.

I think itís foolish to say that an EVF is trendy and something that doesnít make sense. If you do then obviously you shoot differently to me. An OVF is only good for so much.

I agree and have said that for some time.

- Iím still happy with 50mp

But need the following:
- EVF option would be good for the Z
- array of shutter options
- faster processor and operation
- better LCD screen, higher res and lower reflection
- those new zooms 45-90 and 90-180 I lust for
- revised 25mm lens
- there is some size loss to be had with the empty space inside the Z

I am travelling right now in the UK and have brought my Z with DFA35 and FA80-160, plus my Canon 5D4 with 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200, BUT Iím still using my Z for almost everything because the end result is better and itís so enjoyable to use.

If a revised Z arrived with those lenses I could actually lighten my carry load and not bother with both systems.

I did yes. But it didnít say much as usual. Commitment without commitment is easy to do.

Well I would like to see this sensor in the 645z body not for resolution but for the conveniences that come with that sensor tech such as better shutter options.

I donít need IBIS as I use a tripod almost always.

I could do with the newer lenses such as a refined mid zoom.

As for the 100mp Fuji. Itís now the same weight as the Pentax with a poorer grip and even more difficult to store in a bag because of itís height.

Fuji just dropped their 100MP sensor body.

Any word on the street if Pentax will look to utilize this sensor in a 645 body?

Has anybody here using the FA45-85 can comment on the image quality at 85mm stopped down to f/8 to f/13 on the 645z?

I am thinking of getting one to compliment my FA150 or a possible purchase of an FA120.

Thanks

Hi,
My FA80-160 lens has copped a few falls over the years and needs replacing. I have been waiting patiently for the new tele zoom listed on the roadmap but surprise surprise......it never came and I doubt that it ever will come.

So, should I replace it with another cheap used FA80-160 or should I look at an FA120 Macro? I also have a DFA35 and DFA55, plus when I travel I typically take my Canon 5D4 and 70-200/4 L IS and an Ultra-wide zoom to cover the range that the Pentax does not.

If you have the camera set to mirror-lockup on the side dial, no matter what you do the IS will not come on. Try that.

Pentax 645Z vs Fujifilm GFX 50R

Yes itís quite obvious where you are going with your comments here.

This was the second time I tested the Fuji MF and I said the same thing after the first occasion, so Iím not hiding anything. I was excited for it when it first released, now Iím not.

As for the switch to FF. I bought into the Pentax MF system when FF wasnít at that level. I donít need more than 50MP for my work and well, the other systems have caught up now. Is it a crime to want to travel with something smaller and lighter, wanting your favorite brand to fulfill that need? It certainly seems like it.

You might also be ok with having all your money tied up in a system thatís not going anywhere, Iím not. It also seems like itís a crime for calling out a brand for not progressing their system. Even Biz-engineer just said in this thread that the lack of perspective from Pentax is putting him off buying into the system, what does that say?

Not to worry, Iím sure youíll have yet another amazing retort up your sleeve for me yet again. ;)

Pentax 645Z vs Fujifilm GFX 50R

I just did a head-to-head test with the Australian Fuji rep with the 50s, 50R and my 645z.

I have to say that the experience of using the Fuji bodies was the most frustrating and unrewarding experience I have had in quite some time. I doubt based on that experience if I will ever own a Fuji body.

In saying that, I feel that the P645 system is all but dead as well, so I am weighing up my options of possibly going to FF mirrorless later this year and forgetting about medium format for my landscape and travel work. What Canon is doing with the RF mount is truly spectacular, I have never used lenses quite like them, they just need to put out a high res R body to match.

Travelling with MF - how much kit do you carry?
Posted By 2351HD

For travel with MF, I’ve found the key is to have the right bag for the airline and hotel part, then have another bag for the actually photography part.

I pack my Z, DFA35, DFA55 and FA80-160, Canon 5D4 with Ultra-wide and primes, filters and accessories into a Thinktank Airport Navigator with my laptop etc, and then pack a photo backpack (filled with clothes) into my large travel suitcase. When I arrive at my hotel I remove my photo backpack and prepare it for photography, swapping gear in and out before each outing. I also have a small photo shoulder bag that can take my 5D4 with one lens for general walk around.

Then, I travel very light during the day when site seeing with my wife and I only venture out for serious photos at sunrise and sunset/evening. This maximizes quality time with my wife vs me getting good images. I use the time during the day to scope out good locations for the coming afternoon and following morning.

Because I’ve already scoped out the place that I’ll be shooting, sometimes I will only take the Z and 1 lens to that particular location.

pentax 645 system outlook...

I think that the OP is trying to say that he invested in what he thought was going to be an ongoing growing system, but since there has been no meaningful updates, lenses, bodies, news and signs of life since late 2014 (apart from a re-released DFA35), he now feels that he’s invested in a system that is going nowhere.

Regardless of whether or not it can still do what he wants, there is a valid point to be made.

Also, when you know that you can have the same level of performance from a new body less than half the weight, with lenses that your system simply can’t offer, you can’t blame him for looking.

I see some validity in your thoughts.

Firstly, if Pentax simply throws the 100mp crop sensor into a 645z body, then yes there is no reason at all to stay with the Pentax system. There simply is no advantage in doing so.

I have used both the Hasselblad X1D and the Fuji GFX and I can’t stand the Fuji system. The cameras are clunky to use. I need more time with the Hasselblad to fully form an opinion.

I am waiting for the new Hasselblad X Mark II to arrive before making a final decision, and I could even just end up with a FF mirrorless system and leaving MF altogether.

News on the Pentax 645 front---Japanese magazine interview

Compared to the Pentax 645 lenses, actually not really at all.

Pentaxís current DFA 645 lenses, the 28-45, 35 and 90mm are quite expensive, more so than the Fuji lenses.

I understand your position fully on budgets etc. once you are committed to using 645 then itís not so bad.

If I end up selling the 645z, the difference will be less than $7000 easy.

Like I said though, still not sure about it all as the Fuji workings might not suit me based on a couple of things Iíve read.

Pentax do need to really pull out the stops and get on with it.
