Heard a joke by Anthony Jeselnik, comedian know for a dark sense of humor.

Last year was a bad year for my family. My mother should have been celebrating her 60th birthday but because of drugs, alcohol and other bad decisions, we all forgot.

What happened with 35mm roll prices!!

For me the prices are a deterrent to using better offerings like Ektar but still cheap enough to shoot the cheap stuff like Kentmere and Arista. For me, what makes it still worthwhile is that I have been developing and scanning myself. If I had to pay $8 for a roll of film plus another $15-20 to ship it for development then I might not do it. Being so precious with every shot would take some of the fun out of it

Got vaccinated today. Anyone??

“Fact check”? Is there anyone saying Fauci’s current stance (in Oct 2020) is that we shouldn’t be wearing masks? Not that I’m aware of. That clip has made the rounds but even those using it to discredit him use it to show how his stance has changed. I’ve never seen it used by the “no mask” folks as their rationale for not wearing a mask. Those people are far from looking to Fauci for guidance.

Sorry to nit pick but it’s a silly “fact check”. Make up a premise that no one believes and discredit it. No one in October of 2020 was avoiding mask use because they thought they were following Fauci's guidance.

Back on topic. I got the first dose of the vaccine a couple of weeks ago. A bit more injection site swelling than I usually get with the flu vaccine but not bad at all. Some of my colleagues who got the vaccine had more significant but still far from severe reactions.

I’m curious where you find these cameras so cheap. Seems like on eBay clearly broken cameras are sold as “untested” but at working camera prices. Great job on the MX.

How do I set up back button focus on a K-70

Thanks for the link. I can see the benefit for quickly moving subject, sports, wildlife. Seems like giving up exposure lock or focus lock would be a loss, but I guess you aren’t really giving up focus lock. You release the back button and move the camera a bit if you want and press the shutter release.

That thread makes me wonder if many people use focus priority shutter release? As a guy who’s taken my fair share of out of focus pics, is this a useful option or does it cause a bad delay that ends up being frustrating?

Thanks

broken viewfinder/eye piece glass

You SAWED into a K-1 II to replace the viewfinder glass?! I’d be afraid of metal bits getting inside the camera, damaging something else important and hurting the value of the camera.

I was actually wondering about this because there is an older Pentax DSLR for sale locally with a broken viewfinder glass but otherwise supposedly working.

What’s the benefit of this? If you are heavy thumbed and accidentally trigger the shutter trying to half press? The downside would seem to be that you lose the ability to use the back button as an exposure or focus lock.

Pretty sure mine was a Kodak EasyShare 2 mp camera. Still have it in the garage, at times using it to document a car restoration. In actuality I end up using the iPhone mostly. Still surprised how acceptable 2 mp photos are for certain uses.

K-70, Metz 52 AF-1 and off camera flash

I interpreted that statement by Cactus as saying Pentax brand flashes but not flashes for Pentax cameras made by other manufacturers such as Metz, Yongnuo, etc. Hope you are right.

I also found another little quirk in this combo - I can’t get the camera to allow use of the flash’s AF assist light. Not a big deal but if there’s a feature available, it’d be nice if I worked. Have the camera set to AF-S with the single, central AF point. The flash has AF assist turned on, yet when I focus in low light, only the camera’s green assist light comes on. The flash’s spotbeam feature seems to not work either on my K-70. This thread is the only one I could find on the matter and while some folks said it should work, the posts near the end suggested maybe not.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like the Cactus triggers are a good option. I’ve also got a SB-28 that I could use in manual or auto mode and use the Metz in p-ttl if I want two off camera flashes.

---------- Post added 01-07-21 at 08:54 PM ----------

Well, looks like I’m out of luck. From Cactus’ website:
“Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Nikon, Sigma & Pentax
(Remote TTL only works with Pentax system flashes.
Cross-brand TTL is not supported: )”

Why would you leave the sticker on? Probably takes all of 3 seconds to take it off. Does the seller think the buyer might be influenced positively by the sticker? To me it says either he’s trying to hide a flaw or else he is someone who wasn’t an enthusiast or perhaps didn’t care about his gear very much.

K-70, Metz 52 AF-1 and off camera flash

Sorry if this is beginner stuff but I had some questions about using a Metz 52 AF-1 off camera, specifically with P-TTL.
I’m new to flash photography and the K-70, I just picked up this flash. I saw the Gary Fong YouTube video regarding setup and really liked the idea of the wireless flash function of some Pentax cameras where the on camera flash didn’t contribute to the exposure. Naturally I was disappointed to know that this function that I never knew existed was not available on the K-70. How can I use P-TTL off camera other than a cord?
My understanding is that a few short years ago there were options like Acon, Aokatec wireless triggers but clicking on links and searching retailers, it seems like these might not be in production any longer. I think Godox might have a product but that it won’t work with my flash. Is buying another $300 dollar flash (I bought mine more than 50% off on recent sale) to use as a commander my only other option? My understanding is that the Metz 52 AF-1 has the ability to act as master or commander so that theoretically I could use a slightly lower end flash that has only slave function (not master) to act as the slave.

And just to make sure I have the terminology right:
Master - the flash on the camera directs the function of an off camera flash but also contributes to the exposure. In controlling the off camera flash this can be with p-TTL function or “dumb”/manual function.

Commander - the on camera flash sends signal to an off camera flash but doesn’t contribute to the exposure. This also can be p-ttl or manual functioning.

Slave - the off camera flash that is triggered to function from a signal from the master. Does slave necessarily mean that it’s p-TTL or otherwise controllable by the on camera flash (as opposed to servo where it simply fires based on seeing a flash)?

servo - perhaps this is a Metz term? The flash is “dumb” and makes no communication with the camera or on camera flash other than to fire at preset setting based on seeing a triggering light which might even be the flash of someone else’s camera in the room

I know people seem to like the Cactus V6-II but it’s my understanding that this doesn’t support p-ttl. If that’s the case then is there any benefit to this or any other non P-ttl radio trigger over some generic, off brand trigger (which I already have).

Thanks so much in advance.

Modding Chinese (and other) tripod mounts to fit eg adaptall lenses

I bought a cheap, plastic lens tripod collar for a Tamron 60-300 but am unhappy that it prevents use of the short end of the range. Is there a way around this?
It was originally purchased to use on a Lumix using an adapter and I thought about trying to mount the tripod collar on the MFT adapter but now that I want to use the lens on a K-70, that doesn’t help me.
I’m guessing it’s something I’ll just have to live with but thought I’d ask.

That’s my plan. Enjoying a new K-70 immensely, but I ordered a white solenoid to put on the shelf just in case. Looking forward to many years of use. I’m half tempted to keep my eyes out for a low $$ K-50 that someone gave up on due to faulty solenoid and fixing it for a backup.
