Same ISO, f-stop, shutter speed but different exposures?

I completely understand now, and I think everyone talking about stopping down so much affecting it is right. The blades open and close smoothly using the little lever on the inside, but the lens has had a tremendous amount of use, so maybe this is the first sign it needs servicing.

I appreciate everyone's input, thank you all :)

I checked, and I did have it set to link AE to AF point, but could the flock of birds that far away really make that huge of a difference? After giving it a lot of thought, if the sensor really is that sensitive, I can see how a flock of black birds flying right through the middle of the exposure zone could make sense, as I only use the center focus sensor while shooting sunsets as the bright light messes with the AF system and can cause the lens to zoom all the way in using the full array of focus sensors.

edit: and after thinking about it more, I've taken lots of shots with birds taking up more of the center focus point without this effect happening.

I changed the setting so they're not linked. Next chance I get I'm going to try changing the settings back and forth while focusing on getting a flock right in the middle. I know the K-5 autofocus sensors are pretty big, but I can't recall how many exposure sensors/zones there are.

I mentioned in another reply I noticed the problem while reviewing the shots in-camera. These shots have been exported via software, but not edited, but I attached the raw files themselves anyway.

edit: The raw photos didn't upload. Gonna try again.
edit 2: my raw files are "invalid" (DNG)

So here's why I'm confused about that. Shooting at f/2.8 will leave the lens wide open and the blades are as far apart as they can be. The more the lens is stopped down the close the blades come together, so to speak. Maybe you can explain a little more because I would think the opposite would occur.

28,865 as of tonight.

Even though I keep the camera in continuous high, I'm not always blasting away  At most I fire off 6-7 shots at a time when birds fly through the shot but otherwise it's always just a single shot.

The problem is it's very intermittent. The majority of shots are just fine but it randomly over-exposes a shot here and there, but I'll do what I can to keep an eye on things like that.

Thanks for the comment, I just might have to do that but at this point I don't want to put any more money into this camera.

I understand what you're talking about. Using the little lever on the inside of the lens everything operates smoothly and quietly, but maybe this is an early sign of the diaphragm problems/failure?

They were imported to lightroom from raw, then exported to photoshop and saved as jpegs, but I first noticed the issue while reviewing photos immediately after taking them.

Yes, I've always used this lens. With the exception of just having a narrow FOV it's always been very good to me until recently (check out the shot I just posted in the K5 forum). The over-exposure issue started maybe 3 weeks ago and the shutter sound started maybe 10 days ago. If you shoot continuous high regularly the shutter sound is clearly noticeable but it's random.

Even if it's overcast tomorrow I'll carry it with me just to test out the aperture settings and see if that makes a difference.

That's an interesting thought. I've never paid attention to that. I'll give that a look by just firing off lots of shots and comparing the two apertures, but I've been shooting sunsets almost every day for the last 7 months, always on continuous high, usually between f/8 and f/14 and this issue only started happening recently. Sometimes I shoot pretty wide open but with all the birds I like to have as much as a DOF as possible.

While shooting in continuous high, I've recently noticed some pictures showing up overexposed despite having the same exposure settings. I've also heard my shutter make some strange noises, almost like it's sliding rather than "clacking"

Both of these pictures are ISO 400, f/14, 1/250 but clearly have different exposures. Am I not taking something into consideration or is this an early sign of shutter failure?

edit: The first picture is the proper exposure.

Weird spirals processing multiple images

RAW, no filters

They're 16 bit

Boom. This is the answer. I should have mentioned I also use DXO optics and after reprocessing with vignette removal after, those spirals are gone. Thank you :)

So when processing multiple images through Photomatix I end up with weird spirals in the finished product. These can be fixed with the microsmoothing tab but at the same time upping the microsmoothing really takes away from the overall effect of tonemapping. Here's one I just did, the spiraling is not as bad but you can still see it's there in the upper corners. Any thoughts?

Camera is K5 and the lens is Sigma 8-16mm shot at 8mm stopped down to f/5.6 for this shot.

I would have heavily considered staying with Pentax had this been a FF, but as someone who optimistically invested in Pentax gear I will likely be selling my equipment and picking up a Nikon. Overall I'm just not happy with the quality for the money I spend. As far as I know the SDM issue with the DA* line still hasn't been addressed and I simply won't invest any more than I already have. I see better shots with glass from Sigma and Tamron, and if I'm going to go third-party I may as well have a FF to go with them. I think it'll be difficult enough getting a decent price for what I have now. That's the only incentive to stay with Pentax. I tried following a Monarch butterfly yesterday and although I kept it in-frame and fairly centered, the camera simply would not pick it up. I eventually lost it, and what would likely have been a great shot.

Just a little skate montage of some friends. It's definitely better quality watched through Vimeo. You can see when I had forgotten to turn off the SR. Shot using Rokinon 8mm fisheye.
