The popup flash v GPS battle goes on. For me, I just love the despised popup on the K-3, because of this:

The best $A25 I ever spent.

I agree it's not so bad being "stuck" with "just" a K-3.;)

Absolutely. Especially frustrating when (according to Adam, who would know), it could be made to work with a firmware update.

Not to mention a hundred little things on the flagship model. Quiet shutter, robust construction, more buttons, top LCD, much better dust control, faster and quieter AF, more battery power, solid construction, etc etc. When I use the K-30 now, I really notice the absence of those things - although the light weight is handy, and I still marvel at what the K-30 offers as an entry camera. K-70 obviously has a lot of extra features, and the 24mp sensor with no AA-filter, but I still see it as a successor to the K-30/K-50 line. Personally I'd wait for the flippy screen and improved AF from the K-1 to come to the next APS-C flagship; then you can have it all. But hey you weren't asking for an opinion were you Norm? ;-)

@jgnfld, thanks again for sharing these terrific pix.

Thanks for sharing, @jgnfld. Look forward to more samples. Hard to tell much from a small number of scaled down images, of course, but image quality at least looks comparable to the screwdriven 55-300. Good to have the impressions of someone who has both.

Compared to the HD DA 55-300 WR, about half a stop slower, as the price for more compactness. F6.3 at 300mm compared to f5.8 doesn't sound like much, but having had two f6.3 lenses I'd say it can be a significant difference.

Different optical formula, it seems: 14 elements in 11 groups compared to 12/8. Optical performance remains to be seen.

The big question to my mind is how the PLM autofocus works compared with screwdrive. No doubt it will be quieter, but is it faster and more accurate? AF noise and focus acquisition are the Achilles heel of the older model. If the image quality is comparable, many people will find an upgrade worthwhile if the AF is much better.

Then there would be a lot of us with K-3s and K-30/K-50/K-5 cameras clamouring for the firmware upgrade that (according to Adam) would make our cameras compatible.
