With paulh's post, that makes this thread over 10 years old! So much has changed since then. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of bodies used in the later posts are different from the early ones. The lenses seem to be changing too!

Thank you everyone that has posted over the years! I really look forward to seeing what gets in the future.

I just realized that I no longer own a lens that fits this category, which is something I need to fix promptly. Maybe it is time for some new images from me! :)

Where to buy older Pentax DSLR?

I have both a (an?) *istD and a k10D. Both are wonderful cameras, each with their own feel. With A series or autofocus lenses, the k10D is the superior camera in most ways, with high ISO use being the #1 shortcoming. ISO 400 and below the k10D is a monster.

f/2.0 and faster manual lenses that donít have the A setting have metering problems, and focus accuracy is a problem as well. You can get focus screens that help, including the screen from an *istD, but then minor metering problems will happen with other lenses. Itís a trade off. Once upon a time I had a split image screen in my k10D, but then for some insane reason I sold that camera. I really miss that setup.

The *istD is a completely different animal. It is almost like shooting a film camera. It is too slow of a camera to ďspray and prayĒ, and itís tiny screen is really only useful for the menus. Photo review is pointless. My favorite way to use this camera is with an Adaptall 24mm, where the adapter has had its levers removed. Imagine a 24mm screwmount lens, and the experience is basically the same. Also keep in mind that the *istD is the only Pentax DSLR to use CF cards, and doesnít do auto ISO. Some of the controls are laid out in a way that is foreign to all other Pentax DSLRs. These arenít a problem for me, as I regularly bounce between camera brands and even styles, but if you are a one brand kind of person, you might find it off putting.

Both are amazing cameras, and both have some significant drawbacks. If I had to only have one, Iím not sure how I wold choose. Iíd probably take the k10D, just for the sensor, but Iíd really need to think about it for a while. If an *istD pops up for sale for a reasonable price, just buy it. They donít pop up very often. About 2 years ago I paid roughly $65 each for both my *istD and my k10D, both fully functional. I suspect neither model has become a collectors item in that period of time. On either of these cameras, if you ever sell it, you will regret it.

Two more models to seriously consider are the *istDS and*istDS2, if you donít mind only having just a rear control wheel.

I think there is an elephant in the room now, and nobody seems to have noticed. At this point, Pentax really isnít much more than the name of Ricohís DSLR line. If Ricoh goes all in on mirrorless, then itís likely the end of Pentax.

For some people it is an advantage. selecting focus points in live view/video comes to mind.

Touchscreens have a reasonable place on the back of a camera. Not so much on cars.

---------- Post added 02-14-20 at 09:12 AM ----------

Because Canon makes their own sensors, and that is how they chose to do it. I would assume it is significantly cheaper that way. They also had APS-H sensors for a while, with 1.3x crop. Unfortunately they are only in huge bodies, which is why I don't have one.

I for one really like the 1.6x crop sensor in my SL1, and I love the rest of the camera. Variety is the spice of life after all.

Orphaning? Should Canon stop all EOS mount production tommorow, which is exceedingly unlikely, there is a $100 mount adapter produced by Canon that allows full functionality of EOS lenses on the R line. There is a $200 version for the M line. Canon is hardly leaving EOS lens owners out in the cold.

On every touchscreen equipped DSLR Iíve ever seen, you donít actually need the touchscreen. Is its mere existence a problem, or only if it is required to use it?

You do understand that the executives that made that decision are likely all retired, right? You really aren’t dealing with the same company anymore. Heck, many of them are probably dead. The EOS mount has now been around much longer than the FD mount was.

It’s a bit like saying you won’t watch the Red Sox play because of Pete Rose.

Or that you won’t buy Pentax cameras until they bring back the mount and linkages from the Spotmatic F.

Another option you might want to consider is the a7S. Its outstanding high iso performance might make up for the lack of IBIS.

My understanding is that you are not to leave feedback unless you are either the buyer or seller. Both transactions I listed, and a few others, I was essentially shoved away mid transaction. Can I still leave feedback under those circumstances?

---------- Post added 02-11-20 at 08:18 AM ----------

I would like to point out that my suggestion was simply to make a sticky regarding decorum, without changing the rules. Some of the participants in this thread seem allergic to my sticky idea, and I canít understand why.

I used to be a diehard Pentax only guy, but I eventually tried other brands. Now I canít stand using a camera that doesnít have a front control wheel. I couldnít care less if it has a rear one. I care far more about the size of the viewfinder than the size of the screen. I have mirrorless cameras that are screen only, and I can usually live with them, but live view on a DSLR always finds a way to intensely frustrate me.

Suggestion Marketplace manners and protocol

A sticky at the top of "for sale" section suggesting manners and protocol for sales interactions would be wise. I know some of these things can't be rules, but I can tell you that I use the marketplace a lot less these days than I used to in the past, and it is 100% because of unprofessional sellers.

Last year I encountered a massive price increase after the seller and I agreed on a price, and I had allready agreed to purchase the item.

Recently I told a seller I was interested in an item. they responded that it was still available. A couple hours later I asked them for "where to send the money" information, and they told me it had just sold to someone else.

Honestly I'd rather deal with KEH prices or eBay drama than wrestle with this malarkey.

https://www.adorama.com/sart5514eb.html?

I'd also like to point out that there isn't a 35mm f1.2 lens available for the K amount at any size, weight, or price. Yes, these are the "cheapie" lenses, but at least they actually exist for mirrorless cameras. Some of these have no DLSR equivalent.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE DSLRs. I have a Canon SL1, 10D and D30, a Nikon D70, A Pentax K10d and a (an?) *ist D, an Olympus E-1, and I'm sure one or two more I can't remember right now. In most situations my SL1 is my go-to camera. I'm hoping Santa brings me an original 5D! I also have a Sony NEX-3, a Panasonic G2, and have had a half dozen other Sony mirrorless models and a couple Fuji X cameras along the way. There are many on this forum (not you) that always comment on mirrorless cameras, whom I'm pretty sure have never really used one. Many of those that have only ever used them with adapted K mount lenses. Of course the size advantage is partly lost doing that! I do say partly however - any full frame DSLR absolutely dwarfs a Sony A7, A9, et cetera.

Trinity lenses? as in a trio of f2.8 zooms? Yeah, there probably isn't much of a size advantage in that specific lens category. For the rest of us, the potential lens size savings are substantial.

I was thinking of my O.G. D, and it occurred to me that the D is the only Pentax model to have a separate clock battery. Is it possible that it is what is causing OP problems? Just an idea.....

This one of those ďI heard it form someone who heard it form someoneĒ things, so take it with a huge grain of salt:

Around 2003, Anahi Pentax was bought/transformed into/was taken over by (I donít know which it is) PENTAX Corporation. Right about that time, production switched to metal gears. So supposedly if you get one that says PENTAX Corporation on the bottom you are good to go.

Again, this is just something I heard from someone, and I donít really know.

The first statement is largely untrue, and the last one is completely untrue.

Yes, I know Mattias Burling has made the "smaller camera larger lens" argument before, but he has also proven multiple times that isn't necessarily true.

I have had 5 different Sony E-mount cameras, and all of them have been drastically smaller and lighter than any DSLR I have ever had. I currently own both a NEX-3 and a Rebel SL1. My NEX-3 with its 16mm lens is narrower, shorter, lighter (and I'm pretty sure thinner) than the SL1 without a lens. The Sony 16-50 kit lens is 1/3 the size of any modern DSLR kit zoom, with the exception of the Pentax 18-50, which it is 2/3 the size of. I briefly had a Fuji XT-10, thinking it would be the ultimate digital Pentax ME, but it wasn't, because it was drastically smaller than the ME. I put my Konica 40mm on the front with an adapter, and it absolutely dwarfed the camera!

While I have no personal full frame digital experience, I'm pretty sure that the Sony A7 line is drastically smaller than any full frame DSLR.

When Olympus went from 4/3 to micro 4/3 almost everything went half size or smaller. both the cameras and the lenses.

If you know of some Pentax DSLR that is significantly smaller and lighter than a Rebel SL1, then please tell us about it, because many of us would like to buy one.
