On a hike I often travel light and only take 1 or 2 lenses: da15mm or da35mm macro combined with dfa100mm macro or da300mm. For normal fov i often just use my iphone6 😬

Monopods for landscape?

Thanks Barry. Iím still experimenting with the monopod. Other than preventing fatigue I havenít seen huge differences imagewise, but I have no problems handholding the da300 for my purpose and shooting style. I adjust my camera settings accordingly. As others have already said for landscapes n slower shutter times a tripod is my go to option.

Hi, old thead, probably stupid question: When using a monopod, should SR be turned off? I started using a MP for my K3 DA300 combo.

Thanks for clarifying. Yes, i forgot that the red blue or green pixels only can detect Ďtheir owní color.

Maybe stupid question: if you put your color dslr camera on B&W mode, would you have more pixels at your disposal, because you donít need red-blue-green? iow would that result that in a 3-fold higher resolution b&w pic vs the color version?

Btw the Sigma 17-70mm C (which i also have) is also a good allround option, but imo the DA70 is better for portraits: fast n accurate af, very sharp, nice colors, good bokeh, subject-background separation.

I use the DA 70mm f/2.4 exactly for that purpose. With excellent results. Can the smc version can be had for around Ä300.

You Ďneedí a short tele 🤓. DA70 or 100mm macro can be had for around 300 euros (used though). Great for candid portraits, soccer matches and landscapes

Thanks! Yes, maybe my monitor is set a bit dimly. I do check (and correct) for blown highlights. Guess I should bring down the exposure and lift the shadows a bit.

Thanks Des, great series also on your flickr!
Regarding my backlit shot, turns out looking at the original, I didít crop very much: I took it portrait and filled the frame 🙃 I did cut off the bottom and put the eye on one third of the right.
One of my approaches is to get as close as possible to fill the frame (without harrassing the bird/animal, evidently) since I Ďonlyí have a 300mm lens (but a damn good one 🙂).
Not all parrots are as easily approachable as galahs and corellas, though. I have found 28s, black cockies and rainbow lorikeets much more challenging to capture.

Great photo! I like how the bolt branches out, and how it illuminates the clouds. I appreciate the challenge and patience to get a good lightning shot. I Have succeeded only a few times: usually the rain spoils getting good shots. Well done!

Hereís another one (same camera and lens @ 1/400 f/5.6 iso200).

For this one taken in Denham, WA, I had (lots) more time sitting under a shady tree while a small flock of galahs were chomping on the leaves above 🙂.
I like the backlighting, but maybe I cropped it to tightly?

Ha, I will try that. I often also just use center 9 AF points dead center and worrying about framing later in post, but I guess thatís cheating 🤓 (and not always works). Focus is one (very important) aspect, cos it cannot be corrected in post, but looking for interesting lighting, framing and expression probably are just as important to me to get an exceptional/captivating shot. I read once in an interview with a famous wildlife photog (forgot who) that looking to catch the exact moment the animal is interacting (notices you) was one strategy to get there. I also look for Ďunusualí (but natural) poses like fluffed up crest/feathers could be helpful.
Do you also look for particular aspects to get Ďthatí shot? I realise that there is no single recipe for success and that different photograhers have different approaches/styles (thatís the beauty of it). Just interested how you go about it. Never stop learning and I am eager to up my game 🤓

Hi guys,
Many thanks for your kind encouragement and very insightful feedback. Much appreciated! @Des, thanks for taking the time to provide very detailed and constructive comments. Iíll take them onboard.

Just a bit of background: the pic was a bit of impromptu (lucky🙃) shot, although I usually have the camera ready when hiking with the family. I know these parrots are quite common in WA, but for me as non-Aussie (married to an Aussie), an easy and rewarding subject when visiting Oz, due to amazing color.
This beauty just popped up its(her) head up right next to the path at eye level and the lighting was nice, except for the shadows.
I agree the DoF was a trade-off with bokeh. I do strive to nail the focus on the eyes, but AF-S and recompose (for negative space) probably threw the focus off a bit. Smaller aperture and faster shutter would have probably give me more margin.
Anyway, thanks again and I will keep on trying for the perfect shot 🤓
