Censorship free zone

We need a forum that allows the free and open sharing of thoughts and ideas, even though some may find them offensive. A place where fanboys can be fanboys and trolls can be trolls. A place where politics and religion can be on the table, and off color humor is accepted. A place where we can discuss the dark side of bacon and squirrels and equivalence.

This forum would no doubt need to be moderated, but their roles should be strictly defined. Basically no focused personal attacks.

It should be defined and named in such a way that nuns, newbies, and network sensors run in the opposite direction.

In short we need a place without censorship, big brother, and figurative book burning.

I just picked up the gw3 and really enjoy using it. It is beautifully made, provides excellent image quality and further deadens the almost non existent shutter sound. It is heavy and does unbalance the camera, but I suppose that is the entry price for maintaining the image quality. I intend to buy the new macro conversion lens when it becomes available.

Lots of poetry...er ah... marketing speak. Some really good spin control re those that will inevitably complain about the preformance of older glass. I am really looking forward to disassembly and sample variation assessments from the Lens Rentals crew.

I love all of my Pentax glass and I would bet that they have knocked it out of the park with their in-house D-FA glass.

Ultimately they want to bring new folks to the Pentax brand, and what better way to do it than to offer categories of lenses that appeal to both the pixel peepers and the pixie dust crowds.

Hyper Focal is also an Android app and takes the measurement to the 3rd decimal point, you may want to give it a shot.

There is an app called hyper focal pro that gives you this information. You enter camera, lens, aperature and subject focus distance, and it will show you exactly how much of the image in front and behind your subject are in focus.

Ebay is the place. I scored a classic Gitzo with ball head. Massive and sturdy and will no doubt last several more lifetimes. 50$ shipped.

A while back I photographed hundreds of glass plate photos from the early 1900s. I used an old light box and neutral white (around 4000k) bulbs. It worked beautifully. I did want to influence the sepia tone of of the plates by introducing a yellow or blue cast from the lighting.

Thanks for posting these. They are wonderful. I really like the shot in which the participants are red with the haze. There is a pole near center of the photo with one white cloth being held towards the foreground.

As an aside that event should be quite the test for the sensor dust issues some have. You should do a white wall shot at f16 to see how it held up.

Yes, variations on tools or work flow are seldom used/adopted by experienced and tallented individuals to advance their craft (insert sarcastic clap here). In all seriousness; what constitutes "photo bing" and can we make a list? Oh let's do two lists; another for the descriptors of "experienced and advanced photographers". I would be happy to start, but I have no idea where to begin. One last question: does bling sell cameras?

I started playing with this as soon as I got my GR. The implementation is wonderful. There already is cross polination going on between Ricoh and Pentax branded cameras. Let's hope they put the best of both in all of their cameras regardless of branding.

Had not thought about in camera orton image processing. That would be very cool. Actually, when you push the rear jog dial and get the effects menu; it would be nice if they added the multi exposure, interval, and orton items here so you would not have to go into the full menu to access them.

ISO Invariance ETTL

Thanks for this post. Yes two concepts wrapped up in the title.

I shoot raw and ETTL which in turn pushes the iso down. With the GR I have set the user settings for -.3 (not -1... typo).

I suppose this would be blunt if I shot this way all the time, but these settings are for snap focus quick shots to avoid blowing highlights. If I have time to compose I adjust the exposure as appropriate to avoid blowing highlights which more often than not results in ETTL.

As I understand invariance you could shoot the K5/GR at iso 800 properly exposed or at iso 100 and pp to the proper exposure and end up with two images with similar noise. With some sensors this invariance exists from iso 100-1600. So in theory you don't have to be that concerned with ISO?

If I can shoot any iso in a given range and get the same noise level in pp, it makes agressive protection of highlights easier. It also makes TAv + ETTL a nice starting point for keeping iso down and preserving said highlights by pushing shadows.

ISO Invariance ETTL

I started reading about invariance a few years ago and have played around with ETTL on the K7 (failure) and GR (success). At this point my custom settings are set to expose a stop under and this works very well for me. I have read that with the K5 and moving forward, this practice works well. How many of you are doing this and what are your thoughts? It will be interesting to see how this works in practice with the K1. A general Google search on ISO Invariance will present some interesting articles if you are interested in the topic.

Favorite non-Pentax camera?

This may be cheating a bit, but my favorite non Pentax camera is the Ricoh GR. My other would be the Nikon F3. I love them both for the same reason: they represent what happens to a product when it is refined over multiple generations to near perfection. They feel and operate very differently, but are equally amazing to use.

Two full-size K-1 image samples show up on Photoble

Thanks Fire Angel and Gimbal. I started thinking about all of this because of recent threads along the lines of ...need new computer, software, sd card etc if I buy a new megamegapixle camera...It just seems to make sense to allow for multiple raw options, like they have been doing for years with jpeg options. With the GR, the embedded jpeg is small but enough to ck exposure, focus, and blur. If I shoot raw+ the preview defaults to the high quality non embedded jpeg and allows for full quality review.

To take thoughts a step futher, now that wifi is rapidly becoming part of the work flow for many, these additional options make even more sense. Would it be possible to offer an in-camera file zip option to allow for quick and easy sending of large files? Or compression on an sd card if you find yourself short on storage space? The raw option stripped of embedded jpegs is a step in the right direction, but still a large file.

Thanks, I was aware of the above. My post was intended to be 1/2 smarta** comment on antichimping and part serious inquiry into some detail as to why some camera companies embed such large jpegs into their raw files. Apparently Nikon embeds very high quality jpegs in their raws, but Ricoh embedded very low res jpegs in the GR raws. With file sizes getting as large as they are, I would not mind having a raw with no jpeg component. I would have smaller raws and could have the best of both worlds by shooting raw+jpeg, then easily delete what I choose. As it stands now (if I understand things correctly)I am really shooting raw+jpeg+jpeg. Doesn't that extra jpeg data just waste space and slow down processing? Heck if this is the case, you could just embed the highest quality jpeg in the raw file, get rid of the jpeg option all together and put a button in photoshop or whatever that strips the two apart should one decide to keep the images and work with both.

Why are raw files so huge? I have read that they contain jpegs imbeded in them to facilitate in-camera review. If this is the case, how much does this practice increase the size of the raw file? If it is substantial why not offer an antichimp file option to keep raws small?

Why is f1.4 so important?

Absolutely, and interesting that we get 3 pages into this thread before it was explicitly stated. My Sigma 50 1.4 is the default lens on my k7. I only shoot available light and love a fast lens as it allows me to reduce high iso noise. As sensors get better f1.4 will be less necessary for me. I like the sdof look every once in a while, but would rather be able to shoot at f2+. The K1 will be a boon for me due to the super low sensor noise as compared to the k7 and my GR.

Yes, and to your point I seem to remember some up in arms over the up-dates to the rounded blades in the limiteds. Apparently the 15Limited is renowned for its starbursts, and there was fear that Ricoh was going to screw this up by rounding the blades. Mmmv from reality.
