Canon starting to butcher Sony in FF mirrorless (as predicted)

The first professional camcorders were from Ikegami in the 60s (two piece design) and SONY Betacam in the 80s. If you go to the following, you'll see Canon was never part of the mix early on in the professional camera field.

Keep in mind that you will be required, at least in US airports, to now unpack all of your camera gear, place it in a tray for inspection and Xray. A real PITA.

Pentax K-1 Video Quality - Dynamic Range/Matching with other cameras/Best Practices

If you're looking to produce for viewing on standard size domestic television screens, not computer monitors, the K1 video will be embarrassingly soft. As others have posted here, low cost Panasonic cameras and particularly the GH4/5, will kill it. If you need one of the best compromises for still photography, high dynamic range video, low light capabilities, multiple CODEC options, the Sony a7III is an option.

Linn designs and markets more than just turntables, including streaming network players. Pentax needs to do more than produce DSLRs unless they want to be relegated to serving only hobbyists. The real issue, unfortunately, is that Ricoh can't or won't, fund the Pentax brand to bring products to market on a timely basis and provide marketing and technical support they deserve.

Third party lens companies are making mounts for SONY mirrorless and there are various adapters to mount Canon lens to SONY bodies. If Pentax developed a mirrorless system the likelihood of enlisting support from third party sources would probably be higher than it is now with the K mount. It is pretty much assumed many of the current K mount lineup is from Tamron. Certainly they could adapt some of their mirrorless lineup to work with a new Pentax mirrorless mount, if they were so inclined. Personally, as I noted previously, I'll keep my K1 as long as it's doing the job I need but it will be my last DSLR. I know I'm not the only one among Pentax, Canon and Nikon owners who are looking to mirrorless as the future.

I recently bought an A7III to augment my K1. I'm perfectly happy with my K1 for the foreseeable future. But after spending time with my SONY, I'm convinced the future is mirrorless. Several of my Canon and Nikon friends have recently switched to SONY. Where I live here in Hawaii, I see more and more tourists with Olympus and SONY gear hanging around their necks. Ricoh/Pentax will be catering to a diminishing demographic if they continue with a DSLR-only product lineup. That comment will make some here angry and defensive, but it's the truth. Pentax owners barely sustain the brand at this point. In my opinion, Pentax needs a FF mirrorless system to go along with the K1II. Upgrade the K1II to the SONY 42 meg sensor, improve video, buffer, FPS, etc. Just as SONY, and Canon and Nikon, offer both models.

Pentax has among the best ergonomics, menu systems, available. It shouldn't be rocket science to develop a mirrorless body that offers superior ruggedness and weather resistance. A mirrorless design should also include a new mount design to allow adaption of third party FF mirrorless lens. It's time to move past the K-mount.

Consider a used Panasonic GH4. It's a four year old design, quite affordable used, far better video than any Pentax, records 4K as well as 1080, and has unlimited record time.

Pentax K-1 for video compared to other options?

I would, respectfully, take issue with some of your statements. Either the Panasonic GH5 or the SONY a7III will deliver video, both 1080 and 4K that rivals professional standards. Short of professional ENG and run and gun type cameras that cost several thousand dollars or more, I know of no small affordable cameras that equal the Panasonic or SONY in delivered video quality. Both of those cameras offer multiple video recording options, have mic inputs, HDMI outputs for external recording if desired. The SONY in particular, at 24 megs full frame, delivers superb images with lower noise than a K1, or just about any other DSLR or mirrorless, for that matter, including your JVC, which likely has a much smaller sensor with inferior dynamic range and S/N performance. And Canon isn't even in the running at this point unless you get into a 5DmkIV, and it's still outperformed by any of the SONY mirrorless bodies in dynamic range and S/N. Additionally, when shooting in FF mode rather than the Super 35mm mode, the video is shot internally at 6K and down sampled to 4K. The output is superb.

It's also worth noting apps are available that allow a smart phone to provide wireless monitoring and control of both the SONY and Panasonic GH5. As for the K1, as formidable as it is as a still camera, its video capabilities are extremely limited and the actual resolution of its 1080 output is not even up to studio 720P quality, falling somewhere between that and standard def 480P.

I own both the a7III and a K1. They each have strengths absent from the other. For landscape, astro, high resolution images for large prints, the feature set of the K1 is superior. The a7III offers IQ that equals or rivals any other 24 meg sensored body available. It also delivers superb video as well as outstanding tracking AF for stills and video. It doesn't offer any of the astro capabilities of the K1, not even interval shooting or time lapse without an external intervalometer. For video and more casual shooting the a7III has essentially replaced my GH4.

I won't try to shame anyone regarding size and weight of travel kits, and suggest a gym membership. It's becoming more and more difficult to travel with a large assortment of lenses and a couple of bodies, now that TSA in the US is requiring camera gear to be inspected just as laptops and other electronic devices. A real PITA.

In terms of a solid feeling in your hand, the SONY mirrorless bodies don't come close to feeling like the K1. It's like the difference you'd feel/hear when comparing the door of a Chevrolet econobox closing vs that of a high end Lexus.

The SONY a7III was likely ranked so high for the same reasons it's been ranked high by many other reviewers. It's a combination of AF speed, FF, outstanding S/N and DR, superb 4K video and bang for the buck. Plus you can use any number of various AF and MF lenses with adapters. And SONY has finally improved out of camera JPG processing. I own it, as well as a K1, and they are both excellent cameras for different purposes. And FWIW, the a7III, aside from being an inconsequential 6 megapixels short of the Canon 5DIV, outperforms it on S/N, DR, likely AF speed and 4K video performance, not to mention being about a $1,000 less in cost.

I've owned both the D and Z bodies, as well as the 645N body from film days. When I look back at my D raw files I see a color balance I really like very much. The Z images seem a bit more sterile. Ask yourself what you want to shoot with either. There are no reasonably priced ultrawides for the D/Z. If you want to do any nightscapes, the D is limited in terms of high ISO performance vs the Z. That said, either will deliver more resolution than 645 film unless it's scanned with the very best scanners and by an expert operator.

I actually sold my Z recently, finding for my purposes, including night sky work, my K1 meets my needs.

The SONY with the Sigma 24-105 F4 ART lens delivers about as good an image as you will get from a zoom on a 24 meg body. That said, the K1 has all the features I need for night sky and nightscape work, as well as occasional pixel shift files for high resolution landscapes. I bought the SONY primarily for 4K video, particularly in low light situations. But I find myself using it more and more for casual stills. Image quality rivals the K1 and is far superior to the GH4 in overall image quality. I use the GH4 as a small body that I take with me most of the time. The GH4 value is now low enough that if it is lost or stolen it isn't the end of the world and image quality is far better than that from a phone.

I've owned Pentax systems from the 6x7 film days, including a 645n, K5, K3, K1, 645D, 645Z. I miss the color rendition of the 645D vs the Z. And I miss the low noise performance of the Z Unfortunately, I need the ability to shoot ultra wide for some of my work, so i sold the Z. I miss it at times. I'm pretty content with my K1, a SONY a7/3 and a Panny GH4. The three cover all my low light, astro, wide angle, video and travel needs. I doubt I'll be upgrading any time soon.

Do a comparison of DR, S/N, Color Depth, etc., on DXOMark. You'll find the K3 is actually bettered by the Canon except in the ISO100-200 range where the K3 has superior DR. Are you comparing using embedded profiles when PP in LR, or are you using Adobe default profiles? Certainly you'll be able to lift shadow areas with less visible noise with the K3.

Astro Aperture requirements using astrotracer (milkyway photos)

It is possible to achieve decent results with Astrotracer, however I've found what other posters here have noted. Calibration can be hit or miss. Here in Hawaii, some of the lava fields have high iron content, making it almost impossible to get a calibration as a result of poor compass function. I've even found moving 10-15 feet can make the difference between obtaining a Calibrated screen or Failure.

I've also found highly touted ultrawides, such as the Samyang 14mm 2.8 to have soft corners and coma tails at 2.8, requiring stopping down 3.5 - 4 to obtain adequate sharpness.

All in all, my IOptron Skytrackers functions much better than the Astrotracer function.

Pentax K-1ii VS Sony A7iii (Am I switching to the dark side?)

I own both. In terms of absolute image quality, the K1 is simply better, but I'm still able to make 40" wide prints with the SONY that are excellent. I added the SONY to provide 4K video and to provide a FF backup to the K1. My GH4 delivers great video, as well, but doesn't deliver still image quality that I want for a back up, and is poor in low light. All that said, the SONY lacks some key features the K1 delivers including a builtin intervalometer, GPS, pixel shift and of course, higher resolution.

Just thinking out loud here. DPR speculation.

There is an arrogance within the DPR review staff that reminds me of STEREO REVIEW magazine which morphed into SOUND & VISION. The review staff was always right, making arguments that measured technical stats revealed all, that listening tests didn't matter. We've seen the same with DPR in their approach to AF testing. Minor issues are blown out of proportion, making the comments sections a haven for trolls.

The reality is that for test reviews and comparison images, in my opinion, Imaging Resource is a far better site with more even handed reviews for photographers amateur and professional, and less oriented to pixel peepers and hobbyist gear heads.

Fredmiranda.com is another site that I read with some regularity and is far more oriented to those who practice photography for the sake of photography. That said, it is heavily Canon oriented.

I wouldn't suggest this site needs to test other brands of gear but perhaps it's time for a column on this site to offer other photographic news in general.
