The 16mp Optio RX18/RZ18 is on tech.woot.com today for $99 dollars - 67% off MSRP. That's about $21 off Amazon's price for this Optio.

PENTAX 16MP Optio 18X Optical Zoom

18x optical zoom in that little thing sounds good to me! ;)

Looks nice! It would be great for traveling, if I wasn't still using my old Lumix FZ28 for traveling I'd probably sell a lens and scoop this P&S up.

....I just hope this isn't going to be the only thing at CP+...

Give it up, make sure to get your money back. These things never end well for the buyer if you go through with the sale - just the fact that the seller pulled something like this on you after you made an immediate payment is a red flag.

Handling Differences between Pentax and other brands

A friend of mine uses a Canon 50D. She's owned it for about a year, about as long as I've owned my K20D. We decided to switch for a day - Her 50D for my K20D, see what we thought.
Let's just say after a couple of hours, I handed the 50D back to her and asked if I could have my buddy back. She had enjoyed working with my K20D (of course ;)) but I had found the 50D incredibly cumbersome and totally counterintuitive. In fact, while bracketing some shots of the Red Rocks in Sedona the previous morning, I had noticed it took her far longer to set her camera to bracketing mode, whereas with the K20D it's just the push of a button and the turn of a wheel.
The next night, I was helping get her self-timer set for some lightning shots because she had misplaced her wired remote. She had never set the self-timer before and it took me 20 damn minutes to find out how to do it. Of course, she was still utterly convinced that she had the better of the two cameras because "well, it's a Canon!".

So this was the best part: The look on my friend's face when I took my K20D out in the rain for the first time in front of her.
"Can I do that with MINE?" she asked.
"I wouldn't attempt it", I replied smugly.

As far as Nikon goes, my aunt owns a D90 and asked me to help her figure out some of the functions. I was intimidated at first, but after about 10 minutes with the D90 I had most of it figured out. It really does have a better UI than Canon IMO, but neither of them come close to touching Pentax's "extension-of-your-arm" ergonomics. Sure, my K20D's menus may look outdated compared to even a D90.. but at least I know where everything is and I can get to it all in a jiffy.

That's interesting. I just seem to find the grain much smoother and less evident in general at ISO1600 vs 800 - this also applies to long exposures, for me. ISO200 is my default setting for most daytime shots, I actually can't find any discernible IQ difference between that and 100 most of the time.
Thanks for sharing the shots! :)

Thanks John, the Sigma really is an incredibly versatile lens and a great value.

Still impressed by the results I get with my K20D at ISO1600. I actually tend to find that I prefer the look of ISO1600 more than 800, for some reason.

Here are a couple shots at ISO1600 of a Hammered Dulcimer which was put on display at a Celtic festival I went to.
Lens was Sigma EX DG 24-60mm f/2.8, 1/15s at f/4.5 on both.
No NR applied.

The biggest Monsoon of the year in Sedona produced this incredible light show that lasted all night long. It happened just after the sun went down, and I was lucky enough to find a sheltered (enough) area to take this shot. 15s exposure, shot RAW. My photographer friend was shooting with a Canon 50D, but she had to take her shots from inside the car.. Weathersealing ftw! ;)

Great shots, Jim. Were these taken with the K10D or 20?

1st one is my favorite.

Biggest difference: D-FA lenses lack an aperture ring.

Pentax FA-J 75-300mm f4.5-5.8

Asking Price

Item Location
Sedona, Arizona

Item Description
Here is a great budget zoom lens - a silver Pentax FA-J 75-300mm f/4.5-5.8. This is an awesome lens for trips! A little banged up and has some scratches on the exterior (normal with the silver-colored finish) but the optics are perfect and from what I can see scratch-free. I can send you some test shots taken with the lens if you wish. Has nice Pentax colors and rendering, sharpens up nicely at about f/8.

Very versatile and light considering it's size. I bought this lens used from a camera store 1 & a 1/2 years ago for $110.

This is a great alternative to the DA 50-200mm!

Thanks for looking!

I wonder if anyone has actually asked to see under that cloth? Hopefully people aren't being shy. They'd probably get turned down but you never know.
