Wow. This thread really has really gone off the rails. Still, I'm happy that my fellow Pentaxians have these new lenses to look forward to (and squabble over). I'm sure they'll be solid pieces. But, for me, it all comes too late. When I could afford premium glass, nothing much was coming from Pentax - under either the Hoya or Ricoh umbrellas. Now, new product is beginning to show up (but not nearly fast enough). And I can't afford it anymore.

Moreover (and slightly off-topic) while the newest cameras are the best digital Pentaxes ever, they're still not truly competitive when it comes to autofocus and video. I doubt there's reason to believe the next APS-C flagship will be, either - but I'd love to be proven wrong. Personally, after decades of shooting Pentax, I'm at a critical decision point. I'll wait until the K-3II replacement comes out to make it.

In the meantime, I hope the new glass turns out to be everything Pentaxians hope it will be.

Any 12.9-Inch iPad Pro Users?

Well, the decision was made. I took the 12.9-inch iPad Pro back to Best Buy and exchanged it for a 10.5-inch version. My wife gets my iPad Air 2. I think I may have indeed been onto something in terms of the larger screen being better for reading small print and editing photos.

But I don't think I was going to use either for photo editing (at least not consistently) or as a laptop replacement - another thing the 12.9-inch version would be great for (with more storage than I had).

I'm going to use it as an iPad and for that the 10.5-inch version is much better - at least for me. Even a friend of mine who is built like an NFL linebacker had the 12.9 and swapped it for the 10.5. If he thinks it's too big for general tablet use then there's got to be something to it.

Any 12.9-Inch iPad Pro Users?

My wife's iPad (actually my original iPad 2) is dying. I've been running an iPad Air 2 since 2015. Best Buy had the new 64gb iPad Pro 12.9-inch model on sale at a $100 discount. So I picked one up for her. I was a bit concerned about the weight, given she has some arthritis. But the weight wasn't a problem. The size was. She feels it's much to big for her. Okay, fine.

I offered to exchange it for either a 10.5-inch iPad Pro or even a base 9.7-inch iPad. She says my current iPad Air 2 (which works fine) would be enough and that I should either keep the 12.9-inch iPad or exchange it for what I want.

So my question is, is anyone here using the 12.9-inch iPad? Any thoughts? How does the size work out in real life?

I currently do all of my photo and digital editing on the my 2012 iMac (which, surprisingly, works fine after five years - thank the i7 chip and 8gb of RAM). The word is that the iPad Pro is now as powerful as Apple's MacBook Pro laptops and that photo editing is now much more feasible, especially with the larger screen real estate.

Of course, that would probably mean swapping the 64gb model for at least the 256gb model. It's funny, my iMac has a full terrabyte of storage. But, even with 10-thousand photos and 8-thousand songs in my iTunes library, I have used up only about 190gb on the hard drive.

I like the idea of a 12.9-inch screen on an iPad... but I can still do my editing on my iMac. Perhaps I should swap out the larger iPad Pro for the 10.5-inch model with more storage - just to have a better iPad - and leave it at that.

Or I could max out an iPad Pro with the 12.9-inch screen for the inevitable day when the iMac goes. Specing a new iMac an i7 chip, 16gb of ram and either a fusion drive or SSD ain't cheap these days. I can't do it for amywhere near the price I did in 2012.

Any input is welcome.

Like almost everyone else, I told them they need to get serious about producing truly competitive autofocus and quality video. I also told them that the mirrorless revolution is passing them by. I wrapped up by telling them that while I still have a soft spot in my heart for Pentax, I find myself using my Pentax gear less and less often because there are more relevent alternatives for me.

Nice. But for Canon and Nikon only... as usual. We can't even get the 16-300. We shouldn't torture ourselves wondering if and when we might get this lens. We won't.

For each Pentaxian buying K-1 another Nikon/Canon shooter jumped ship to Pentax

That's lovely work. I have no doubts about the quality of the K-1's output. For me, the Olympus E-M1 Mark II made sense because I already own a number of other micro four-thirds lenses. If I bought a K-1, I'd have to begin buying Pentax full-frame lenses. Since I'd require more than just one, I couldn't stretch that far financially.

Also, I plan to shoot wildlife with the Olympus. With the Leica-branded 100-400mm zoom, I have a full-frame FOV equivalent of 200-800mm. That's optical zoom before any cropping. That's the kind of focal range you need when shooting animals. And it's all in a hand-holdable package with weather resistance.

Then there's size and weight. One can't call the E-M1 line tiny within the world of micro four-thirds. But it's still smaller and lighter than equivalent full-frame or APS-C gear. A few years ago, I thought seriously about buying the Sigma 50-500mm "Bigma" for my K-5. That was one heavy package. Even the slightly smaller 150-500mm was a serious proposition in terms of size and weight.

While the K-1's full-frame sensor is certainly superior in some ways, the very latest 20mp micro four-thirds sensor surprises many people with its image quality, dynamic range, etc. So it's not like it's a bust. And I have high-res mode as well for when I want to shoot non-moving subjects. If I need to shoot video, Olympus quality is now up to competitive levels.

I will, however, keep my eye out for the new Pentax APS-C flagship. Here's hoping it'll be enough of a leap over the K-3 to make it a "must have" item. Then, if I can't swing it even after perhaps selling my K-5 and K-5IIs (I'd keep my K-3), then I'll wait until prices fall later in its product life.

I don't dispute anything you write here. But I can tell you that for the first and last time in my life, I recently had $2000 to spend on a camera body. And I didn't buy a K-1. I bought the Olympus E-M1 Mark II. So far, I'm not disappointed. There are a lot of factors that go into a decision like this, of course. And it doesn't mean I'm selling off my Pentax gear. But I'm sure there are others like me and Pentax really needs to kick it up a notch.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I liked my K-01. I enjoyed it's brick-like appearance and simplified control interface. It had two fatal flaws: slow autofocus (even after firmware updates) and a rear LCD that was impossible to use in bright sunlight. Both issues are easily dealt with using current technology. So I say bring on the K-02.

But is Pentax thriving? I wish I knew. I hope so but it seems like a Catch-22 situation. Ricoh keeps Pentax in the black by not spending too much money and moving along very slowly and cautiously when it comes to new product. But that policy also allows Pentax to fall further and further behind the competition, and forces otherwise loyal Pentaxians to seek what they want elsewhere.

So do I. But I haven't added anything to my Pentax kit since the K-3 body. I'm happy about the K-1 for those Pentaxians who wanted a full-frame option. But I'm not one of them. I made a decision to get away from the size and weight of that kind of gear more than a decade ago. And I'm certainly not going to pay the going rate for K-1 lenses.

I'm patiently waiting to see what the new APS-C flagship will be. I suspect it will be priced at about the same point as the K-1, given the price of the KR. If that's the case, Pentax will have had to advance by leaps and bounds in terms of autofocus and video capability in order for me to even consider it. I'm not holding my breath.

In the meantime, I have my micro-four thirds and Fuji gear to sustain me. I don't think I'm alone. I'm willing to bet that many other Pentaxians have been dealing with the limitations of their kit by quietly buying into other systems. That's money that isn't being spent on Pentax.

I've been in broadcasting for over 40 years - much of it in TV. I can tell you this: While the TV set manufacturers will try to get consumers excited about 8K video, the truth is, it will be much more useful as a production tool and in movie cinemas. I have a 4K UHD set myself and it's great. But image quality isn't a dramatic leap over 1080p - not in the way HD was a leap over the standard-definition TV picture we all grew up with. 8K? On 42-to-70-inch screens? You need more real estate to see a significant difference.

In most cinemas today, a digital projection of a movie is in 4K. And it's fine. Perhaps 8K will be usefully better on screens that large. But I don't see a problem now. Now... in terms of film and TV production, it's a whole 'nother story. 8K will allow directors to crop scenes if they aren't pleased with the framing or composition. They'll be able to experiment with different approaches while actually shooting a scene only once - which keeps production costs down. 8K will be a major advancement in terms of production.

In terms of cameras that consumers can buy, perhaps 8K capability will eventually make it into most of them. But I suspect the only people really using it will be the people who buy cameras like the Panasonic GH5 today - independent filmmakers and the like. And they'll be using very expensive cini lenses on those camera bodies. Can you picture an average oerson trying to shoot, edit and store 8K home videos on their PC? Sure, it'll be possible. But 4K storage is difficult enough already for many. And how about the processing horsepower needed to render those projects. Again, it can be done. But the average schmo probably doesn't want or can't afford the computing tools needed.

pentax m-e mirrorless camera with aps-c sensor coming??

All of that is wonderful... but we've seen most if it elsewhere before. And it's true that the AF is much improved. But it's still not class-leading. Don't misunderstand me: I'm not saying Pentax's aren't good. And I'm not saying they're not good value. Remember, I have three Pentaxes in my signature. The K1 is excellent but It's a brave new world and it's going to take more to become one of the leading brands again. Pentax is still moving along in incremental steps - and is barely marketing its products at all.

At this rate, the camera market may collapse before they've secured enough share to guarantee survival over the next decade or two. They need to produce cameras that instantly become THE ones have above all others in their class. That's what I want because I want Pentax to be one of the survivors. My concern is that Ricoh doesn't have enough resources and technical chops to do it anymore. I'd love to be proven wrong.

And you feel Sony and Fuji are lacking innovation, you haven't been paying attention. They may not be for everybody but they're not lacking innovation.

I don't know. Perhaps if they can simply keep Pentax in the black they can go on indefinitely. But it might always be a tiny, niche player. Ricoh tells us they want to grow Pentax but, while the cameras they make are great, we're not really seeing any innovation, are we? The cameras are good, solid, tough pieces that make great photographs. But it's clear more is needed in the 21st century. Pentax doesn't seem to have the resources to keep up.

I was one of the people who told Pentaxians to be patient when Ricoh bought the business. Give them at least three years, I said. Well, that time has past and while the K1 is a great camera, it still lags behind the competition in terms of autofocus and video, despite its improvements. Pentax is still moving cautiously and incrementally. And, because of sea changes in the camera industry that are beyond the control of the camera makers, much more is needed to grow ithese days.

Please don't misunderstand. I've never been a "Pentax is doomed" guy. One bright spot is the 645 line. But - what's this? We suddenly have surprise competition from Fuji. The new KP seems like a nice, smaller camera that's perfect for Limited primes. But autofocus is subpar compared to the competition and battery life is lousy. Pentax doesn't seem to have the resources for big, bold, game-changing moves that are needed to get ahead in the 21st century.

It might be enough for many existing Pentaxians - I don't plan on selling my kit - but if Pentax can't grow strongly, what's going to happen as the industry as a whole continues to slow? There'll only be so many survivors and I'd like Pentax to be one of them.

A few reasons.

1) Fuji, like Canon, is a part of a larger, stable company - a company that is committed to photography, one that began in film a century ago. But, unlike Kodak, has managed to avoid arrogance and costly mistakes.

2) Fuji is on an upward trajectory, both in terms of product and sales. Each generation of their new X-cameras is markedly better than the last.

3 Fuji seems to have a loyal following - no doubt boosted by the company's policy of extending as many updates and improvements to its cameras as the hardware can handle.

4) Fuji seems to understand its market position and is striking a fine balance in terms of cost, quality and features. Fuji knows that, for most people, it's the new Leica and is actively working to be that. A company like Nikon seems to have been clueless about its market position for some time. Just ask Thom Hogan.

5). If you were to quietly talk to Canon engineers and executives (as a number of people have), they would tell you (as they have others) that it's not Nikon that they're afraid of. Once they passed Nikon in sales, there was no looking back. It is - and always has been - Fuji that they were worried about.

Other brands, like Nikon, may survive. But I suspect the company won't be independent for that many more years. Like others, I love Pentax, but it's clear that it's almost a hobby business for Ricoh. Sony and Panasonic cameras are parts of large companies, too. But, regrettably, Panasonic may be pulling back. It's hard to tell what Sony's long-term commitment is but with the announcement of the new A9, they seem pretty serious.

Like most of us, I have no idea what Ricoh's medium-to-long term plan is for Pentax. But if I am to take them at their word, they appear to be so cautious and conservative (a classic Japanese management trait) that they are getting themselves into serious trouble. They're observing mirrorless trends? Still? That's it? If they're being honest with us, then they've clearly mistimed yet another seismic shift in the industry that John Flores was talking about. I'm hoping they're simply being coy about their plans. But I wouldn't put money in it.

Meanwhile, I suspect there's going to be a major shakeout among camera makers over the next few years. Nikon has finally pulled its head out of the sand - this late date - and admitted they're kind of in trouble. I love micro four thirds but Panasonic appears to be reoganizing its camera division and will probably put out less in the years ahead... and Olympus has been a question mark for a few years now. Honestly, a decade from now I expect there to be only two or three major camera makers left: Canon and Fuji... and possibly Sony. Of course, there is always the chance of an aggressive and successful upstart from China.

I don't care about the gimmicky touch bar. But an i5 chip for photo processing just doesn't work for me. I'm still using a 2013 iMac with i7 processor for my photos and it still gets the job done. But I'm not sure what my next computer will be. The Mac ecosystem has worked well for me over the past decade but I think the company has lost its way. Their new stuff is just too expensive for what you get and includes a lot of gee-whiz features I don't care about - at the expense of functionality. Yes, I know, the cool kids use them! And while I have an iPad, I can't see doing post production on it. I like some screen real estate for that, which is why I still have a desktop.
