50 f1.4 vs 24-70 f2.8

Your 24-70mm I am afraid will fall short in terms of classic portraiture. I still use K-3 but in my experience with FF DSLR or SLR's I used mostly 105mm and 135mm primes or 70-210mm fast zoom for flexibility. I like to say that your 90mm Macro will do excellent job (I guess it is Tamron 90mm). Don't be afraid of extra sharpness as this can be easily fixed in PP but you will have that dreamy bokeh and thin depth of field with advantage of very close focusing ability. Of course you can use also 50mm 1.4 but you will be very close to your subject to fill in the frame. Take P-TTL Yongnuo with you for fill-in flash in high contrast situations.

I am using Beike BT-03 Gradienter when I do not need my other tripod head (Manfroto 808RC4) and got also the the macro slider plate (LP-02) with it to balance heavier camera/lens combinations for emergencies. If I know that I will use heavy lenses than I use my 808RC4 head which can handle those with ease.

I use macro lens also but not the Tamron however this is on my list to get it. I am using Sigma 70mm and it is not slow in getting auto focus nor it hunts. The quality of the shots are way above what zoom lens can deliver and for head shots or portraits you will need this lens. YMMV.

Landscape Neutral Density filters

The Wine Country filters are more expensive but they are tested on 100MPx Phase One camera for critical sharpness and neutrality.
Those wooden "accents" are for the purpose there... they say that there are to better handle the filters when is cold, better to touch wood then metal, but also are decorative.
The cages for the 100x100 glass are also there to protect the glass from fingerprints and in case of dropping them. They also have some kind of protective mechanism that does not allow caged filter to fall out if it is by mistake pushed from the top...

To me Wine Country is very well taught and designed product but also more expensive, especially when you need to get adapters for other lenses. I do think that Breakthrough Photography has also premium product but I cannot find anywhere tests to see before and after sharpness and color cast.

In terms of Polarizer hands down Wine Country has better solution there as their filter is drop in and turned with small wooden handle. This is something that I never saw anywhere so elegant solved, simply brilliant. Is it worth the price? That I do not know...

Still no one was chiming in who has Wine Country filters. I thought some 645Z folks use those but it does not look good. We will see if someone can chime in on hands-on experience with those ones.

Hello there,

I have narrowed down to two manufacturer of 100x100mm square filters and cannot make decision in terms if it is okay to pay premium for one of those.

1. Breakthrough Filters ? Breakthrough Photography
2. Wine Country Camera

I like to know if anyone here uses one of them and how they compare to each other.
Also let me know if anyone has better suggestions than my choice above.

Thanks!

P.S. I lost my ND filter set somewhere, probably somewhere when I took some photographs...

I would suggest that you look for a Tamron AF 90mm Macro lens. The bokeh on any macro lens is good and close focus is of advantage, also it is priced very reasonably if you look for used one or even new one.

You can start looking for a PC with those specs:
CPU - i5, even i3 will do the job but need to have high clocked CPU over 3.0
RAM - 16GB or even more if you do panoramic landscape shoots
HD - SSD (best); HHD (a middle, Hybrid Hard Drive with 8GB SSD) and regular Hard Drive with 2TB (I trusted with this WD Red HD) for storage or NAS solution to be added later
Graphics - If you are not gaming then I will recommend Radeon Pro WX 4100 or middle priced nVidia solution
Display - BenQ SW2700PT and add calibration device to it

That's my recommendation for the new PC and this will be good for at least next 5 years... Just remember that you can go with any IE: Dell, Lenovo, HP etc. and add what is necessary after or let someone build you a PC and make sure that PSU (power supply unit) is big enough to cope with all of this, especially if you getting straight from store (or online) PC.

Pay attention that all hardware is compatible with OS you plan to use.

Have a quick question in regards of Selens Magnetic Honeycomb Grid Spot filter set.

Obviously they are blatant copy of MagMod but did anyone here has MagMod and Selens and knows how is the quality of Selens Set.
The price difference is big for something from rubber and magnets...

Selens Set: Selens Magnetic Honeycomb Grid Spot Filter Set For Nikon Canon Flash Camera | eBay

MagMod: MagMod Basic Kit Speedlite Flash Modifier - MagnetMod

Pentax K3ii SD card slot problem

Did you by any chance at some point had only Flu card in slot 2 and took a picture?

If so the K-3 had a bad habit of changing the default card to be the card you had in, in this case Flu card in slot 2.
You can try to remove card in slot 2 and insert only one card in slot 1, shut down the camera and after power up with only one card in slot 1 take a picture and this will change that slot 1 is the default again, but this might be not a problem... worth trying though.

I just come back from Laval but did not new that there was a photo expo. I have to keep my eye on next year one if it is annually.
The only thing is that even if I knew that there was a show I do not think that I had time while I have to finish all work on house (winter prep) before I drive back to Toronto (work). Did not finish even all of the work I planned as I have unexpected guests at our house. Glad to read your experience there.

Looking at this map I think that a new wide angle full frame will be out soon... maybe D-FA* 35mm or 31mm F1.4! Time will tell.

Now I will put my Sigma 50mm DG EX HSM (latest version) for sale and get that new D-FA*50mm 1.4 lens.

---------- Post added 10-27-17 at 01:19 AM ----------

I am just wondering how much it will be new D-FA*50mm???

Darktable 2.0.7 under Linux Mint 18.2... a great Lightroom alternative

I started also to use Darktable not so long ago as alternative to my Adobe CC subscription while my windows PC getting refurbished and it was great alternative. Since my windows PC is almost done I am using again Adobe CC since I am paying for it but other than that Darktable is great and if I stop to pay Adobe I am back to Darktable. The Linux Mint is great choice as it comes almost ready with everything you need but I was running into some stability issue after using it for some time (display start to flicker occasionally and other quirks) and I was migrating to Solus OS where I am now and very happy with it. I have multiple hard drives with other installed Linus OS (like Ubuntu, Mint, etc.) and I can swap them and run other Linux distro right away. Since the community at Solus is great and very responsive if I ask something or needed technical help as I am not experienced with Linux I strongly believe that I will stay with them. They even helped me installing Autopano Giga on their distro. So far that's all I will need: Darktable, Autopano Giga, GNU (Gimp), Inkscape, etc.

They are plenty of tutorials on youtube about Darktable and Gimp that I watch and learn. Soon I will start to bookmark helpful ones as it is not easy to remember all those things.

I am glad that more and more people embracing Darktable as in my opinion this is the best suitable, at least to me, solution on Linux. They are others as well but I believe it is personal preference and seeing it that other people are choosing it as well made me more and more sure that I choose also right.

So far so good and I am looking forward to see your pictures developed with Darktable!
