Shake Reduction stuck, or???

Not likely, five shots in a row, followed by dozens more, with only two (I said "one" previously) similar (and again consecutive!) failures.

For now, I will assume that I failed to wait for AF confirmation, though I'm not betting on this. Perhaps subsequent outings will shed some light on this. Now that I know there is a possible problem, I can check each shot carefully.

Thanks for all input.

I've often wondered about the meaning of some of the info in the metadata, so this helps.

So now the question becomes, why would the focus be so far off (subject was definitely much more than 5 feet away)?

I looked more and I see that the bad shots (2,3,4,5,6) show Focus Range Index of 7, 4, 3, 2, 2 respectively - all over the place, but the focal lengths and distances change, so one can't make clear conclusions about the validity of these values. Having said that, Shots 1 and 2 were taken 18 seconds apart, both at 16mm, and #1 says "Close", #2 says "Distant", yet it is clear from the images that I moved closer to the subject for the latter.

So, something is screwed, but I don't know what. Perhaps next time I'll intentionally not wait for the AF confirmation, and we'll see what happens.

I had a thread about this problem a long time ago, and "we" felt it was a bug. Nobody offered the solution you present here. Very good to know!

And no, you don't lose focus if you release the back button before you shoot, because pressing the shutter release has no effect on AF, and there is nothing else that will cause the lens to refocus.

Looking for members in France

I need to send to an embassy in Paris a prepaid envelope that they would use to send some documents to me in Portugal.

I am unable to locate any courier that will sell me such a service in Portugal. An alternative, according to the embassy, is to use a prepaid Registered mail envelope. I don't see how one could prepay for registered mail, unless there is such a service in France that I have not encountered elsewhere.

A final option would be to have the embassy send the stuff to a member in France (because it is possible to buy a prepaid France-to-France envelope), who would then send it to me. I would prepay for everything, of course.

Any suggestions from French members would be appreciated.

AF, center point and recompose, but very little movement of camera for the recompose, definitely not enough to create such a problem, even if it is a focusing issue.

Interesting observation, but could a "simple" AF failure result in quadrupling the frame of the sunglasses?

Images 2-6 are all similarly bad. Of those, two were with flash and three without.

I cannot eliminate the possibility that I failed to wait for the AF to lock. Unfortunately, the AFPointInFocus field in the metadata is not filled when the camera is set to back button focus (instead of shutter release focus). Of the total 104 shots taken that day, in addition to shots 2-6 there was only one similarly bad one.

Well, if bad misfocusing can create the appearance of multiple images (as is the case with the sunglasses), then I suppose it can be simpy a case of me not waiting for AF confirmation. But five shots in a row, with only one more out of the following 98 makes me wonder.

I just noticed that one has to download the image to see it in its original form. Expanding the on-screen image using the + sign is not the same, as the detail is gone.

The downloaded image clearly shows motion blur: look at the sunglasses and shoes.

The middle one was included to show that the problem suddenly disappeared. It is not blurred. i.e. The 1st and 7th are "OK", but 2-6 are obviously bad.

You should be able to use the + sign at the bottom expand the image as much as you want. Also, a download should yield full size. There is obvious motion in at least some of the 2-6 images, if not all. I also wonder if the glare is a factor here.

My SR is ON most of the time. I don't necessarily expect it to do anything when it does not need to. But I don't know that it is completely deactivated at the indicated shutter speed, and if it is not, and it is misbehaving then that could be my problem, I suppose.

Pretty much the shots after the 6th were OK, insofar as the shown problem is concerned. I doubt that I could replicate the situation.

Yes, EXIF should be there, but anyway, it's a K-3 (hence the K-s forum), and a16-85mm lens, which has been very pleasing for the most part.

Went for a drive with the wife when it was still very nice weather here a while back, and took a few shots.

The 1st: https://app.box.com/s/421hrw8gnmza0x1pb3rcvgrvsj5sufwh

The 7th: https://app.box.com/s/pnufm4633qi57pzqifb9vp0abemnff7r

The 6th: https://app.box.com/s/t68zkkmv22zun05cih2z64poqyjr3bk5

The 2nd-5th were similar to the 6th, showing varying degrees of impossible shake or movement.

BTW, the first six shots also show very low contrast, and I'm assuming this is due to the position of the sun which was pointing towards me from over the roof.

I am sure that the blurriness is not due to any motion. Is this the Shake Reduction misbehaving? Is the sun screwing upthing? Is there another explanation?:(

Because it could be amateur with a smart phone who got $20 for shooting a few poor images for the local agent, with neither funds nor taste for a better product, to be used in a brochure intended for local mailboxes.

A short Dutch Review of the D FA *50 f1.4

Translation of the Conclusion:

The De Pentax-D FA* 50mm f/1.4 SDM AW is anything but a lightweight and he also costs a nice piece. But for that money you get a lot back. The lens is very well made and delivers great results with sharp details, even wide open, and a beautiful creamy bokeh over a large part of the aperture range. It is perhaps the best 50 mm lens I have ever worked with.

Sounds good to me.

Platinum Award.

A wife decides to take her husband to a strip club for his birthday.

They arrive at the club and the doorman says, "Hey, Dave! How ya doin"?" His wife is puzzled and asks if he"s been to this club before. "Oh, no," says Dave. "He"s on my bowling team."

When they are seated, a waitress asks Dave if he"d like his usual and brings over a Budweiser. His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says,"How did she know that you drink Budweiser?" "She"s in the Ladies" Bowling League, honey. We share lanes with them."

A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Dave, and says "Hi Davey. Want your usual table dance, big boy?" Dave"s wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Dave follows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her.

He tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every name in the book. The cabby turns his head and says, "Looks like you picked up a real bitch tonight, Dave."

The doctor said, "Joe, the good news is I can cure your headaches. The bad news is that it will require castration. You have a very rare condition, which causes your testicles to press on your spine, and the pressure creates one hell of a headache. The only way to relieve the pressure is to remove the testicles".

Joe was shocked and depressed. He wondered if he had anything to live for. He couldn't concentrate long enough to answer, but decided he had no choice but to go under the knife. When he left the hospital he was without a headache for the first time in 20 years, but he felt like he was missing an important part of himself. As he walked down the street, he realized that he felt like a different person. He could make a new beginning and live a new life. He saw a men's clothing store and thought, "That's what I need - a new suit".

He entered the shop and told the salesman, "I'd like a new suit". The elderly tailor eyed him briefly and said, "Let's see ... size 44 long". Joe laughed, "That's right, how did you know?" "Been in the business 60 years!" Joe tried on the suit. It fit perfectly.

As Joe admired himself in the mirror, the salesman asked, "How about a new shirt?" Joe thought for a moment and then said, "Sure". The salesman eyed Joe and said, "Let's see, 34 sleeve and 16-1/2 neck". Again, Joe was surprised, "That"s right, how did you know?" "Been in the business 60 years!"

Joe tried on the shirt, and it fit perfectly. As Joe adjusted the collar in the mirror, the salesman asked, "How about new shoes?" Joe was on a roll and said, "Sure". The salesman eyed Joe's feet and said, "Let's see ... 9-1/2 E." Joe was astonished, "That's right, how did you know?" "Been in the business 60 years!" Joe tried on the shoes and they fit perfectly.

Joe walked comfortably around the shop and the salesman asked, "How about some new underwear?" Joe thought for a second and said, "Sure". The salesman stepped back, eyed Joe's waist and said, "Let's see... size 36". Joe laughed. "Ah ha! I got you! I've worn size 34 since I was 18 years old". The salesman shook his head, "You can't wear a size 34. A size 34 underwear would press your testicles up against the base of your spine and give you one hell of a headache".

Two elderly couples chatting.

One of the men says: "We went to a great restaurant last night". "What's it called?" asked his pal.

He racks his brain, then he says: "What's that red flower you give to someone you love?" "A rose," his mate says.

"Rose," calls the man, "what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?"

Two women meet in the afterlife. Following is the conversation they had.

1st woman: Hi! My name is Wanda.
2nd woman: Hi! I'm Sylvia. How did you die?
1st woman: I froze to death.
2nd woman: How horrible!
1st woman: It wasn't so bad. After I quit shaking from the cold, I began to get warm & sleepy, and finally died a peaceful death. What about you?
2nd woman: I died of a massive heart attack. I suspected that my husband was cheating, so I came home early to catch him in the act. But instead, I found him all by himself in the den watching TV.
1st woman: So, what happened?
2nd woman: I was so sure there was another woman there somewhere that I started running all over the house looking. I ran up into the attic and searched, and down into the basement. Then I went through every closet and checked under all the beds. I kept this up until I had looked everywhere, and finally I became so exhausted that I just keeled over with a heart attack and died.
1st woman: You should have looked in the freezer... we'd both still be alive.

A long time ago Woody Allen had a book that clearly stated "Ever since the Swiss discovered that you can reduce the size of anything by simply making it smaller...".

Now I don't know who to believe:(
