Sigma announcement about K-1 lens issue

So Pentax should buy a couple of dozen lenses from it`s competitor just to make sure they work ok with their new design camera?!!! And maybe alter their carefully crafted design to accommodate a rival`s lens? Or perhaps alter the software to suite?

If Sigma want to sell lenses that work with a camera manufacturers equipment then there is no reason why they shouldn't, But it is up to them to keep pace, or at least catch up. Not the other way around!

I gave up buying independent lenses 40 years ago, And would never consider going back to one!

For Pentax to check every 3rd party K mount lens that is out there would be incredibly expensive and time consuming! But then why on earth should they even contemplate doing so? Pentax make some very fine lenses of their own. That fit and work perfectly. If Sigma paid Pentax for using the mount then perhaps I would expect a little more cooperation between them. But I do not believe this to be the case.
I have every sympathy with those who are affected. And I hope that a resolution can be found swiftly so that we can all enjoy this fine camera to the full.

I visited my local camera shop this morning to buy a new pentax neoprene camera strap and D-BG-6. and I happened to mention to the assistant about the issue regarding the Sigma lens. He was quite assured that Sigma would upgrade the chip free of charge. I hope that gives some encouragement.

That is what I am doing at present for SR on off Pixel shift etc etc. But unlike the K3 the Focus point selector is in the Menu so I have to select that to change the type of focusing and AFS or AFC. It would be rather nice if those wheels on top could be used for their intended purpose rather than being ornamental! It`s no big deal but would be nice! :-)

Battery grip: yay or nay?

Just got my grip this morning. It definitely improves the balance and yet doesn't feel much heavier. Though it does make the camera considerably larger. Sadly the battery tray is not compatible with earlier grips. I used to find it useful to switch trays from my K5II to K3 when I needed to change in a hurry. That`s no longer possible with the K1 as it`s a slightly different profile.

And that is the aim of us all! Simply to enjoy our hobby!

Some people use their camera without a lens so that would not be an option. I`m thinking of pinhole photography using aluminium foil with a pinprick, or those that hold the lens a little in front of the camera to take shots

I`m sorry the pleasure of your new camera has been tainted with this problem. I look forward to hearing of a resolution soon.

Best Regards - PeteL

Don`t worry, I didn't take it as anything personal! :-)

It may take a little while but I`m sure a solution will emerge.

Best of luck with sorting it out!

I too have failed to list my Pentax equipment on my signature! Personally I don`t feel that it is relevant to do so. I have a vast range of Pentax lenses which I purchased in the 1970`s along with my KM and three MX`s. All primes ranging from 20mm-300mm. And all of which I still own and occasionally use. Currently My gear is K5II (soon to be passed on to my daughter) K3 and K1, x2 540FGZ , x2 1.4 converters and the new 24-70,70-200 and 150-450 plus a 300mmF4 that I have not tried on the K1 and a FA 100mm macro. In addition I have APSC 16-50 and 50-135 which I no longer use.

I understand and sympathise with all those affected and I hoped that a solution can be found as soon as possible.
I do feel however that the problem should be directed at Sigma. Pentax make lenses that are compatible with Pentax camera`s. They have always allowed other manufacturers to use their mount (Ricoh and Praktica in the 1970`s come to mind) but are not responsible for the way that they operate.

Best Regards

I do sympathise with you, These days everything seems to have a chip in it! The Autofocus on the K1 is a substantial improvement on my K5II and K3. But you cannot expect Pentax to test every lens from each of it`s competitors to ensure they work! The camera would have taken even longer to release and cost considerably more!
Camera manufacturers make much of their income from lens sales. The latest 70-200 from Pentax is superb. But if there were issues with compatibility then I would have cause for redress with Pentax. Otherwise I can only hope that the problem that you have is resolved swiftly.

Best Regards

It sound`s perfectly reasonable, I feel sure that Pentax or Sigma will produce a solution for you in due time. Have you tried asking Sigma?
These things do unfortunately happen with any brand of camera. I gave up on independent lenses 40 years ago so I have only Pentax glass.
Have you tried cleaning the contacts on your lens? I had an occasion when my old 50-135 stopped working on my K3 but when I put it on my K5II it worked perfectly. I cleaned my contacts with isopropyl alcohol and all was well.
I hope that you find a solution very quickly.

Best Regards

You only need to look at Microsoft Windows! I have slide scanners and operating programmes which will not run on Windows 10. I have to keep another PC on which I installed XP to utilise my old stuff. I can`t blame Microsoft for not supporting third party gear.

Yes indeed. I was lucky enough to have three of the new Pentax lenses plus a couple of older F/F lenses ready for when the K1 was released. I gave up on independent lenses back in 1977!

I agree entirely, I would possibly have used the top wheels had they been functional with the screen off, But you are correct in saying that the front and rear wheels are perfectly adequate! Still, Maybe it`s good to have the option as it may suite some photographers?

I am a convert to the articulated screen having watched a Canon user next to me getting soaked by waves as she knelt down to get a low viewpoint. Whereas I was able to take the shot standing above my tripod!
Though the light`s on the rear of the screen failed to function on a couple of occasions, (The front one worked without any problem)

Surely this is a problem that ought to be addressed by Sigma rather than Pentax?

I am sure they will be working on a fix if it is at all feasible. The K1 is very new, So it may take independent manufacturers a little time to bring their products into line.
Even the Silkypix processing suite that came with the K1 has had an update so that the 15-30 can be supported.

There is already an update for the Digital Camera Utility 5 available to support the new lenses and correct a couple of glitches in the Silkyipix software.

That`s the way many people that I know use their camera.
I did try to live with the screen on, Just to make life easier for myself! But I could not tolerate it for more than a few hours!
With the K3 I could access most things by pressing the Info button, The K1 has some items on the menu and others on the info buttons.
One other thing that I noticed last night is the level indicators in the viewfinder are superb for daylight, But not visible in low light! The K3`s are illuminated which make them more suited to levelling the camera in poor light. I had to resort to using the digital level each time I repositioned the K1.

Actually I have a similar problem with the K3 with the info screen switched off.
What I would like on the K1 is to use the camera without the info screen being illuminated continually as I find it distracting. I would prefer to turn the top dial to change a setting then that could be shown on the screen until I have finished making the changes then turn the screen off again. With the K1 and K3 I would also like to press the AF Mode button to make the necessary changes then press again to turn off the screen.

I know that some of the info is displayed in the viewfinder, It would just be nice if the information could be displayed on the screen briefly when making adjustments. I use most of the parameter changes and find the tiles on the info screen more convenient. I just prefer not to have it display once the changes are made. The good thing is that the camera can be customised to cater for most people`s taste.

Having lived with my K1 since Thursday, The only thing I would like to be included in any upgrade (other than the one I posted earlier) would be to have use of the smart wheel when the info screen is off. At present I am using my camera in the same way as I did with my K5II and K3, Pressing the info button to make the necessary changes. Hardly a chore but I have two wheels on top of my camera that are just decoration!

After giving it a little thought i believe that if they made it so that pressing the AF button would bring up the AF adjustment panel regardless of which info screen setting was in use (including off) then i would be content!

I also miss the speedy handling of the K5II It took a while before i figured out how to disable the screen! However unlike all of my previous Pentax DSLR`s when the screen is switched off there is no info on startup. Usually the Mode setting would appear for a second or so on start up or wake up. now the only way is by reading the dial (not much use in the dark!) or to turn the mode dial back and forth. I find the change of AF mode a bit of a pain too but i am going to give the AFA a chance to prove itself before i cast judgment!
It would be a lot quicker just to hit the Info button to scroll through the different displays like the K5II rather than mess about with the info + L/R buttons!
