Certainly not the size nor the weight of the DFA equivalent but it's certainly up there with IQ.

It's been a while. Photography's taken a back seat for work and family. Nonetheless, an extra public holiday helped and here's what I found in the yard:

Well done.

One of the unsung features of the 100 macro is its portrait and landscape brilliance! Thanks for sharing this. Very nice.

Now that's a fine comparative study. Thanks for sharing this for the pixel peepers out there. It is noticeable even without pixel peeping ;)

If the AF540FGZ is available to for that price and you can afford it, that's the one I would choose. You would never need another flash.
I've had mine amongst a Sigma and Yongnuo and I find my go to flash for all purpose versatility is always the Pentax.

Bravo for taking care of the camera, and for seeing it through the generations. Not many cameras can boast this in the current era, and just about all Pentax dSLRs have the ability of being legendary.

DA* 16-50 Stiff Zoom Ring

Not everyone places consideration to those finer details to lenses, hence the discrepancy.
But I do recall this little issue with a 16-50 I had, and indeed it didn't affect function, but it was occasionally annoying to have to put extra effort to zoom in (my tightness was both ways). I'm not sure much can be done about it, a precision tool will have very small tolerances and fixing it may risk it not being the same again.

Brilliant result. The exposure is a little low for the foreground but the AT has done a very good job and your masking PP work is spot on.

Three Portraits, Three Lighting Approaches

I like the work put into the explanation and lights.
Outdoor shots are tricky given the balance between ambient and fill light that needs to be factored in. The fill light has to compete with the ambient light to create the desired lighting effect. My view with those outdoor portraits is that the fill light should highlight the subjects face and the kick light could be more outlining over the opposite side's hairline. But that's only one view, and take it with a grain of salt.

Quite the landscape. Green amongst the desert lands. And the icon in the midst stands so obvious in the image. Well done with the shot, and hope you soak in all the sights and sounds in that historical land.

Nice reminder.
Sorry for the accident. Incidents like these can never be reversed as much as we'd like to redeem ourselves for the oversight.
But if this lens is a keeper for you, then no significant loss.
Shoot on.

Is the K-1 good for a beginner?

Advanced cameras like the K-1 allow a budding photographer room to grow into it.
It can be set to be as simple or as complex as the photographer wants it to be.
Advanced APS-C cameras are quite similar, but there is no substitute for a FF viewfinder. The experience is what makes the craft more enjoyable, young and old, newbie or pro.
If the funds can be spared/justified, K-1 is an excellent choice.
Even better are the lenses to be paired with it.

K1 AF issues at a wedding...

The lenses you were using aren't comparable to the 24-70. The 18-55 in particular is a very quick focusing lens due to its short focusing throw. The K5II may have had its lens correction option set to "off" and that of the K1 being "on" (slowing processing time significantly). The K3 using a non-Pentax lens doesn't have that factor in the equation. The Tamron 17-50 is similarly a very quick focusing lens. I'm not sure why there would be a huge difference in focusing ability even with the Pentax FF lens on the K1 but that may be a part of the explanation. To investigate it more accurately, you would test low light focusing on the same subject under the same lighting conditions using the same lens on both het K1 and K5II (or K3II). I hope this is not sounding patronising if you are well aware of these aspects. If there is a big difference still, and you have the latest firmware, post your data here and let us know.

K-3 should serve you well, a fine camera indeed, very capable and affordable nowadays.
Enjoy shooting with it - it will be leaps and bounds over the K100D in every way, but all Pentax cams are capable of amazing things...
