Firmware update to astrotracer for lunar/solar tracking.

There is possibly a legal reason it doesn't support this.. if joe numbskull decides to track the sun with is brand new K-1 and 150-450mm but doesn't use a solar filter and fries the sensor and melts the aperture blades, they don't want joe getting upset and trying to sue them for damages.

I'm curious about that.. when you filed the claim, did your insurance company raise your rate? And was there a deductible?

Is it possible to bring a fishing rod out there with a large hook and try to snag one of the metal 'eyelets' that hold the camera strap on either side of the camera body?

That 55-300 PLM should be rather nice on the K-50 (after you firmware upgrade the K-50 to support it -- one is available if you haven't already). Plus it is all electronic AFAIK so it shouldn't even need the aperture motor dealy in the body.

If you need more reach than that with your Pentax.. look at maybe a Bigma 50-500, used Sigma zoom, or go Nikon D7200/D7500 or Canon 80D and get a Sigma 100-400 or 150-600mm. But, of course, that is going to cost you.. a lot.

Also remember with those bigger focal lengths generally comes bigger size and weight.. consider all the factors.

Lightroom "Classic"

Actually, it does. Enough customers moved to the cloud service that us standalone customers are simply collateral damage in their shifting to cloud-only services.

Same here.. Lightroom just works. And it works well.. I've tried all the alternatives (in some cases, multiple times over years and years of upgrades) and they just don't replace Lightroom. I don't even like the results of Affinity Photo for RAW development.. despite otherwise appreciating it as a light Photoshop replacement. So I'm not sure Affinity is the company to replace LR for me..

I think Adobe knows their system is well refined and many people have years and years of experience with their software (over 20 years for me) so they know they have many by the ear.. which is the only reason they were bold enough to offer a rental service in the first place. It makes sense more for their shareholders than it does their customers, but their customers are (largely) satsifed with paying 10/month for the rest of their lives to use the software (versus a one time buy of 600 or so bucks, followed by 200 dollar upgrade fees every 3 years on average).

And I don't trust Corel anymore than I do Adobe. Corel is such an aloof company.. and as you have discovered their support is rather spotty.

That said.. LR6 should just work for many years to come.. so there will be years for all other applications (and possibly new ones) to be developed in it's place.

DXO Optics Pro free

With the news out of Adobe today that Lightroom 6 is the last perpetually licensed (Standalone) version of the software, I decided to give this another look. I think it could work except for one major issue.. Optics Pro does not catalog files. To the point, DXO have designed a plugin for Lightroom that allows you to transfer files back and forth between applications. I suppose this could work, but it also means I'd have to keep LR6 installed indefinitely to continue to catalog files, even if processing in Optics Pro.

Plus I think LR has a more robust set of features... and plugin support.. it is just a shame they have decided to give up non-cloud versions of Lightroom.

The bigger story is an obsession with charts and graphs that is unhealthy.

I like to use the charts and graphs when coming to a purchase decision (as one of many aspects considered). However, beyond this, what does it matter? Society can become so fixated on things that don't really matter and miss the things that do matter in the process.

DFA*50 1.4 coming

Its a really popular focal length and fixed aperture ... they sell by the bazillions for Canon and Nikon (and I'm guessing well for Sigma too since they keep offering updated versions) as upscale kit lenses... a notch above the variable aperture kits but with a wider short end.

Pentax really needs weather sealed primes though more so at this point imo. That and a modern 70-300 ish FF zoom to pair with the 28-105 WR.

Canon offers one. It is smaller, lighter weight, has a smaller filter thread.. but I don't ever foresee a new K mount 24-70 f/4.

I think a better value would be a 24-105/120mm f/4 ...but I also don't foresee one of those happening soon either (unless Sigma starts offering theirs in K mount).

I've pretty much sold most of my gear off.. 16-50, 55-300, 50-135, 10-20, DBG4, K-r, K-1... My 28-105 still up for sale and I might still sell the K-5 II and 18-135 as well as my DA 35 and 50 and a couple Pentax branded flashes.. 360 and a 540. Oh and a Sigma 120-400mm.. essentially my 'collection'.

Gasp, shock, eek..

Again this all goes back to different people using different devices for different reasons. It isn't an all or none situation. Even if the market, as a whole, trends one way it doesn't mean the rest of the market is out of touch or doomed to failure.

Trade 18-135 for 16-50?
Posted By mee

I've owned both.. I'm selling my gear and have already sold the 16-50mm and will likely sell the 18-135mm soon.

But I'd say the 18-135mm is as sharp stopped down to about f/5.6 to f/8 (depending on your focal range) and is a little smaller and a lighter. The DC motor is more reliable too in my experiences compared to the SDM in the 16-50mm.

For a walkaround/vacation lens I think I like the 18-135mm better but I do enjoy getting down to 16mm -- that extra 2 mm is noticeable on the wide/short end of the focal range. But I always long for more range on the wide end where the 18-135mm makes up for it.

f/2.8 speed is nice but I found 2 copies of the 16-50mm I've owned needed to be stopped to 3.2 or slower before it really sharpened the view to my liking. Still, having a rather fast fixed aperture through the focal range is a treat and helpful for indoors shooting.

So its a tossup.

The data doesn't necessarily point to the claims being made though.

For one, those camera sales are simply a part of the phone. You can't buy a smartphone without at least 1 (usually 2 or more) cameras on them. Thus, the data simply shows a lot of phones were sold (that also happened to contain at least one camera onboard).

But that doesn't mean everyone who bought the phone is using it as their primary camera.. or for the camera at all.

Nor does it show that smartphone camera application is the same as more dedicated camera application. Which would then possibly lead one to wonder if the users of these smartphones are interested in the same level of post processing as someone with a dedicated ILC would be?

All it seems to show is, again, a lot of smartphones have been sold globally.

And, perhaps, camera related apps might be a business to enter. But it doesn't show, on its own, what type of camera related apps should be developed (cutesy, animal face selfie makers, instagram filters, lightroom edits, photoshop edits, or something different altogether).

Yes I think we'll see 100 MP too.. 80MP bare minimum.

It is amazing to me thinking about the 645D not but 4 or 5 years ago and how it seemed unreal to have such a high resolution sensor in camera.. now that seems to be the baseline (not considering physical sensor size).
