Is distortion normal - Pentax HD PENTAX-D FA 15-30mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR Lens ?

Thanks Rawr, I will look into Dx0 more. I have read good things about it, but have been a long time user of Lightroom and am used to the workflow. It also has a lens correction module which generally works well. Only problem is that these are sometimes user submitted and I'm not sure of their quality control.
Have you used Lightroom? Do you find Dx0 better?

Thanks Eyrr, see my reply to Rawr. I gather you use Dx0 as well. What are your thoughts on it vs Lightroom?

Thanks, I was hoping to avoid custom corrections but you may be right.

My question was to determine if I had a poor copy. Reviews I had read did not refer to significant distortion and so the first few shots I took to check sharpness surprised me when I looked in LR6.

Appreciate your comments.

Thanks Mike,

Yes the example of the car's distortion left to right caught my eye particularly, as did the fence line rising left to right in the other pic.

It is no doubt likely that I was not completely square facing to either fence or car in the shots, however while the car was clearly in the right hand quadrant, the fence ran through the scene.

From experience with the 10-17mm on the K3 the distortion generally had symmetry and was obvious through the lens.

I may not have paid enough attention, but issues weren't obvious in the K1 as I made the pics.

Thanks again.
John

Thanks so much to all who have replied. I will read up a bit more.
I have had experience with the DA 10-17mm and love the fisheye effect. On the K1 its good from about 14mm but not as sharp as the 15-30, nor as bright obviously. I will check out decentering also.

I also need to test corner sharpness a little more

Hi Sandy,

Thanks for the reply; glad to see a local Pentax user. There are a few of us.

You obviously know the Bay fairly well.

I had read about shutter shock and will try mirror up and SR off on tripod.

I guess from a distortion point of view, I have the DA 10-17mm which I used a lot on my K3. I expect distortion on this lens but have been surprised how well LR6 takes care of it, even at 10mm.

I don't know what I expected but for the money, the distortion is more than I bargained for. LR6 is not doing much in correction.

Anyway, thanks for your comments; I will let you know how I go in Yosemite.

Rgds,
John

Hi Folks,

I have just purchased the above lens ahead of a trip to California and Yosemite National park, in particular.

First shots on my K1 have been a little lack lustre wide open at 15mm, although it is probably me needing to get used to the lens. Stopped down to f9, the sharpness improves, but I am finding significant distortion (see attached link) which even Lightroom 6 with the appropriate lens adjustment doesn't fix.

Dropbox - DFA 15-30

Am I to expect such distortion at wide angle or do I have a problem lens? If the distortion is normal, are there any tricks to correcting it; for a AUD1,500 lens, it is a little disappointing.

Thanks for your help

John S

Hi,

I have juat come back from my first decent road trip with the K1.

Overall, I was very happy with performance but for an annoying tendency for the K1 to go to sleep with its eyes open.

What I mean, is that on multiple occasions, when walking the streets of Cuba, I would take a shot and then maybe walk for a minute or two with the camera on, before attempting another. What I found was that unlike my K3, a simple dab at the shutter button to focus on a subject produced no result.

I would have to either force it by changing the focus distance or turn off and on, consequently losing a number of shots.

Is anybody else experiencing a similar issue, and have a solution?

Thanks,
Frank Oz

Thanks Kiwi_jono hope you're enjoying the K1. Yeah the screw on hood for the 50 is a bit of a pain. I do love the crisp sharpness and bokeh. I tend to shoot wide, so sometimes I like the forced challenge of adjusting to 50mm perspective

Hi folks,

Just looking for help with a travel decision. I only have room for one of these on a trip to Cuba. Also have the 28-105 but figure a brighter lens may come in handy.

I'm sorely tempted by 50, but wonder if wider 35 is a better choice for street photography etc.

Any experience or thoughts appreciated.

I chose the same combination, although in truth, the decision is not hard when you look at the cost of current alternatives. On my K3 I have the 18-250 as my walk around and it has been a great lens. The IQ of the 28-105 is brilliant though, justxaa your pictures show, and it is a solid well made lens. To cover for the tele end, I bought the FA100-300 (4.7-5.8) which has proven a good buy, and am tempted to buy myself a Rokinon 14mm for Christmas. Love to see more of your snow shots, we don't get that white stuff in Australia lol.

I think the 10-17 remains quite usable on the K1 uncropped. You can either leave the lens hood as Normhead did, or go to a 16/9 crop, which I do frequently anyway. There is not much lose of utility in my view.

Thanks Class A, I'm afraid that wasn't the issue, however a recent update does seem to have solved the program's instability in any event for my K1. I haven't tried the GRII yet

Eyefi card alternatives?

Thanks ApeKing. I will look into it. The problem is that the Ricoh GR has embedded software functions that are specific to the EyeFi card, such allowing you to choose all or select a few photos to download. I use the connectivity for transferring to an Android phone for uploading to social media. I should state that a EyeFi did release a utility which allows direct connection to a PC/MAC, so some functionality remains, but this doesn't suit my purpose.

---------- Post added 2nd Oct 2016 at 02:02 PM ----------

Uncle Vanya, direct mode will work to PC/MAC using a utility EyeFi released just before shutting down their service. Unfortunately, they made no promises about whether the card would still allow direct mode transfers to an Android or iPhone. Upon trying a few days ago, the phone can see the card and the card will still function by allowing selection of photos for transfer, but the actual transfer requires access to Eye-Fi Center for which the server now seems to be shut down.

I may be missing something; happy for any ideas.

thanks

Eyefi card alternatives?

Hi Folks,

I've been Googling without much success to see if my GR is compatible with other WiFi storage cards. I am looking because my Eyefi cards (I use one in a Pentax K3 also) stopped functioning as means to transfer files to my Android phone, on 16 September following that company's decision to discontinue support for their Xpro 2 line of cards (I won't say what I think of EyeFi).

I need to either buy a replacement WiFi card if there are compatible alternatives, or upgrade to the GRII, which is probably a stretch just for WiFi.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice.

Thanks,
Frank Oz

K-1 & Image Sync

Hi All,

As a Sony Xperia Z5 Premium user, I thought I'd add my learnings to this thread.

Maybe, sometime before "hell freezes over", Ricoh or the maker of ImageSync might produce a manual that tells Android users, who have paid good money for their cameras, how to use their software.

Anyway, I have been trying for a while to connect a K1 without success. What I have found is that as soon as the "connect" button is clicked, the existing WiFi network on the phone disconnects and cycles rapidly through a search cycle over say 15 - 30 secs without success. If you stay within the ImageSync app it is a cycle of death.....nothing happens, you keep trying to connect without success.

Through frustration I stumbled on this: Attempt to start the app...go immediately to the Sony Xperia's WiFi settings...you'll see it furiously cycling...after about 30secs it will give up, but you will see the Pentax WiFi connection waiting, click connect, it may ask for the camera password, and watch it connect (it will warn you there is not internet access; that is fine, you aren't connecting to the internet).

Now go back to the ImageSync App and select "start without a connection". You will find that the connection "bizarrely" connects to the camera and both tether and upload of pictures from both cards is present.

One thing, don't try to upload a full RAW file or even full HQ JPEG, the file sizes are too large. As I will use the phone to post the odd pic in social media, I am using XS, high quality (ave 1.50MB file size).

Hope this helps, but message me if I can help further...I'll try

Steve,

I am not sure you have your facts correct. It is EyeFi cloud that is being discontinued. In addition, they have signalled an intention to brick the app that allows file transfer to phone or pc.

I know decisions such as these are taken every day obviously, however in this case, there was no announcement until 30 June 2016, with a warning that the app will cease working on 1 October.

It's a case of whether they respect those many clients who forked out considerable fundsfor their products. The perfunctory tone of their email just adds insult to injury.

Furthermore, their website and others already mentioned are still selling the soon to be bricked products.

If they were client focused, I would have thought they could leave legacy access, unsupported perhaps, but not just brick the product.

I take it you don't own an Eye-Fi X2 card?

Rawr,

it depends if you use an Eye-Fi X2 or X2 Pro sd card.

I bought 2 some 18 months ago for use with my K3 and GR. With their sale announcement, they also announced that they will no longer support the cards and will brick their wifi function.

Absolutely poor form. They are still selling them on eBay and Amazon!

Pity any mug who pays $100 for one.
