I was trying to make such picture for ages :)

Actually there are some pictures that you have to have in your portfolio if airshows are your area of interest. This is one of them, others are split of plane formation, modern fighter shooting flares (in extreme magnification) or dynamic pass when planes are flying from opposite directions and seems to cross each other way. I am still missing some of them - we will see next year :)

I was shooting in TAv mode with ISO range set from 100 to 800.Aperture set to something near f/5.6 and shutter speed set depending on type of object (fighters: 1/1500, propeller planes usually 1/500 or longer, helicopters 1/320 or longer).

I know that for helis and props I should use longer times to have better rotor blur, but I do not have good, steady hands... I am Polish, so maybe I should just drink more...

I was using AF-C mode, hi-speed bursts and only center AF point (typical strategy for this kind of event).

I spent there 3 days (1 day of rehearsals and then 2 days of the main show), each at different spot.

As a result, I had 6000-7000 (my memory is not so good for numbers...) of RAW files to go through. Finally, after few months of difficult work, I selected ~350 pictures which I kept. The best 36 I put on my website.

Sometimes - almost nothing, sometimes a lot. During airshow, regardless of lens you have, focal length is always too short :) 16 megapixels of K-5 (and flawless IQ of Sigma 100-300) allows really heavy cropping, if necessary.

I think that in spite of cropping all of my pictures could be printed in big formats. I haven't tried this but when they are displayed on 46" plasma screen, they look even better than on smaller screens.

Actually, pit in Radom is worse than some other unofficial spots that are outside of airport.

Unfortunately, from public area (and from the pit) you watch the show against the sun for almost whole day. If you stand (with small ladder) on the other side of the fence, then you have sun behind your back and very often planes are flying directly above head.

Always the best idea is to try both - that's why I spent there three days (1 day of rehearsals and 2 days of the main show). For one day I tried official public area and for other two - on the other side of the fence.

I must say that I am really happy with the result, but after these 3 days I was not tired but exhausted :) And then I had to go through ~7000 raw files to select the best ones - it was rather time consuming job and I am really happy that it is already finished :)

K-5 IIS Autofocus

I am using K-5 for airshows and I can confirm that it is decent camera for this kind of photography (even K-r which I was using before was really good for it).

Please remember that camera body is just part of your equipment. Second one, maybe even more important, is lens with really fast autofocus. Unfortunately, for Pentax mount there is nothing comparable to Canon 100-400 which is very often mentioned as "the lens" for airshows. I am using Sigma 100-300 f/4, sometimes with 1.4 TC.

On my website you will find some results:

It was taken with Sigma 10-20 and you're absolutely right. Flare "resistance" of this lens is just disaster  Pentax 17-70 is much better here (flares have nicer shape and they resemble flares from camcorders).

That's true but actually these mountains are rather small :D More or less 1000m but views are really impressive :-)

Additionally, these mountains are rather small and trails are short, so you do not have to get up in the middle of the night to be at the top before sunrise. It is enough if you get up at 5:00 (in November). During summer it is not so easy...

SMP DA 12-24 wide angle lens

My advice is to stay away from Tamron 10-24. It was the worst lens I have ever had (and I tried 2 copies!). Sharpness was just disaster even stopped down.

I can recommend Sigma 10-20 which I use for few years (with K100D, K-m, K-x, K-r and now with K-5) and it is really good lens. As far as I know P12-24 is sharper but Sigma is wider :)

DA 18-135 WR or other?

To make your choice little more difficult, let me vote for DA 17-70 :)

I am not able to compare it with 18-135, but I am using 17-70 for more than one year and I am really happy with it. It is sharp from wide open and autofocus is really fast.So far I do not have any problems with SDM.

Here are some examples (mainly landscapes):

I would consider Sigma 100-300 f/4. Sharpness is excellent (even at f/4!), and it has THE FASTEST autofocus for Pentax I have ever seen. I am using it mainly for airshows. I was able to get really good results with Pentax K-x:

Czech International Air Fest 2010

Malopolski Air Show 2010

And with Pentax K-r I got even better results (no pictures on my website yet, but there will be some soon)!

I am not sure if I can myself "experienced" but I have been in similar mountains before (in Polish part of High Tatras), so it seems that I am well prepared. And I made some investigation too - this mountain seems to be just great!

Places like this are always dangerous, but that's why people go to mountains... not only for nice pictures but for some adrenaline too!

As a Pole I must say that I love Slovakia, especially Slovakian mountains and food :)

I already visited Pieniny, Mala Fatra and Velka Fatra and all of them are just wonderful for somebody who loves mountains. My next stop next year is Nizke Tatry :)

That's really bad that we have so rainy summer this year - every weekend I am planning hike in West Tatras (Rohace!) but it always rains... :( Maybe next weekend I am lucky :)

Before buying expensive 18-135 check this thread:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/140658-da-18-135-photozone-8.html

I am using DA 17-70 and as a general purpose zoom is exactly what I need. Are you sure you need WR? I I am shooting outdoors for few years (mountains, forests, beaches, dunes) and I have never problems with my non-sealed lenses. No dust inside.

Yes, I am always using CPL (Marumi) if there is any chance to emphasize blue sky :) I am using it also because it reduces reflections on grass and makes it more green.

I am very often using people as a staffage on my pictures. Well, very often it is only thing you can use :) The main reason is - as you mentioned - to show scale of mountains.

Here are some more examples:
