Anyone got a chance to try the MonsterAdapter yet?

As title says,

MonsterAdapter released the Pentax K to Sony E mount converter today. Didn't see a thread on it so here we are.

In the off chance you've been out of the loop, here's what I'm referring to: MonsterAdapter - Hello World! | Facebook

28mm Limited for APS-c?

Honestly I just want the LTD 43mm K-1 experience on the Kp. Compact, f/2 or faster, great IQ, great looks. A camera and lens setup portable enough for daily use and with a big enough aesthetic difference compared to AI bokeh/noise reduction. I'd buy that lens even if it was 500+ USD.

Pentax ME-Super and 1.2 lens metering

The manual does state that the ME Super comes with a 1.2 lens in certain configurations, and I don't see any specific instructions for it. Testing the Pentax-A 50 in 1.2 and 1.4 Av mode seems to change the exposure settings when in auto so I think its working.

For reference, the MZ-3 guide states:

"When the f/1.2 lens is in use with the lens aperture ring set at a position other than the [A] position, the center-weighted metering mode will be set instead of the multi-segment metering mode. As the exposore will come out 1 stop overexposed, set the lens aperture ring to [A] or adjust the exposure deliberately 1 stop under.

^^^ This was what I was concerned about

Pentax ME-Super and 1.2 lens metering

I've asked elsewhere on this forum before that some bodies have their aperture coupler calibrated for 1.4, so shooting with glass such as the Rikenon 50 1.2 or the Pentax 50 1.2 requires using exposure compensation for correct metering. That's why I asked the question.

I guess I'll test it out in the next few days and see whats what.

Thanks for the tips

Pentax ME-Super and 1.2 lens metering

Hi all,

My previous experience with the 50mm 1.2 is that the metering is one stop over on some film bodies. Will I need to adjust the ME-Super to shoot at -1 to meter correctly or not?

Thanks

Nikon Z6 for legacy glass?

The card reader isn't an absolute must, you can just tether usb to the camera and download the images off camera that way if your workflow doesn't require super fast turnarounds.

Also with today's announcement of the Z9, you can expect prices to stabilize across the Nikon brand, since a super professional grade camera will stop brand attrition.

Nikon Z6 for legacy glass?

I just bought the Nikon Z6 a few days ago and I can tell you overall the shooting experience as a whole is truly excellent. The ergonomics are very good, overall EVF is large and bright, and the SOOC quality is very respectable.
Specific to MF or adapted glass your experience will vary wildly depending on your preferred shooting style and workflow:

If you use a dummy adapter with no electronics:
- Focus peaking is easy to setup, with 3 different sensitivity levels and 3 different banding colors.
- You can zoom in the liveview by pressing the +/- buttons on the bottom right or set a custom button (50% scale, 100% scale, 200% scale). BUT doing so will drop the framerate of the EVF and back LCD frame rate down to something like 5-10 frames a second. My opinion is that this feature should be best used only once in a relatively static scene to determine critical focus, such as studio or astro.
- IMO point 2, the EVF is already bright and large so its not really necessary to use the zoom function unless you want absolutely the best results.
- There are no magnifying eyecups or LCD loupes currently available to my knowledge that can be used as a workaround to not using the on camera live view zoom

If you use a smart to dumb adapter, your best option now is to get the Techart or Megadap Leica M to Z and then attach a dummy m42 or K mount to L mount:
- You'll get full autofocus
- AF performance is good in the center 60% of the width, and around 75% of the vertical space. AF works outside this region too, but is less reliable.
- AF is slow, expect 1-2 seconds for infinity to CFD focus.
- You might brick your adapter if you dismount the adapter before turning off your camera
- The Megadap provides an additional 2mm helicoid focus throw compared to the Techart, whilst the Techart is rated for heavier lenses

If you want to use a fully smart adapter, you'll have to wait until the MonsterAdapter Pentax K to Sony E adapter comes out, then mount it onto the Techart Sony E to Z adapter. I already own the Techart Sony E to Z, and what I can tell you is:
- Sony + Tamron lenses work very well
- AF is as fast as the lens motor allows
- AF can become very erratic and jumpy when going outside the center 60% width and 75% vertical space
- Near plug and play levels of usability
- MonsterAdapter is not out yet
- Two layers of lens program translation might be dangerous to any part of the chain

Hope this helps

Pentax LX 2000 price?

As title says,

I found a local store with a 99.9% mint LX 2000 special edition. No box, no silver 50mm 1.2. What's a reasonable price for it - as the seller honestly doesn't know the price either?

Cheers

ME Super repair?

Got the camera back from the shop, and they said they couldn't repair it since they don't have replacement spring parts.

Welp.

Maybe its time to open up the camera myself and see whats what, but I don't have a spanner or the rubber cap needed to twist the top plate of the winder arm.

Another option if you want to do macro work, decent super zooms, and also have a lighter but fully weathersealed body is to go for a Nikon Z5 or Z6 paired with either an adapted Tamron superzoom or the Nikon Z mount one. The EVF experience is decent and the ergonomics comes very close to Pentax levels of ease. You'll shave off a few hundred grams that way.

Otherwise the Pentax KP is a great choice - just be sure to try to handle one before buying since not everyone likes the grip. You also can't go wrong with picking up the 43mm limited, it's a fantastic lens and can be used as a narrow walkaround or short portrait.

28mm Limited for APS-c?

From a manufacturing standpoint basically all high R&D electronic products today have very high gross margins to offset their R&D budgets. It would be extremely hard from an accounting standpoint to amortize these R&D costs onto specific products when their market competitiveness is bundled together.

Item for Sale
Pentax K-1 Mark II + DFA 24 - 70 + Flashes

Asking Price
2,200.00 USD

Item Location
HK (Hong Kong)

Item Description
A complete FF setup with the K-1 Mark II! I've decided to part ways with most of my Pentax studio equipment that I'm using less and less because I can't ignore video work any longer. I'll still keep a few bodies and glass (esp my ltds) but they will mainly be for hobby shooting only.

----

The majority of gear has been extremely well cared for sitting in a non smoker fine art studio, mainly used for documentation/archival/product photography which is very low on shutter actuations. I'd prefer keeping all of the gear as one set, but will entertain offers for individual parts if there's no interest. If you're interested in this kind of work PM me and I'll be glad to help you complete your shopping list to get started.

Pentax K-1 upgraded Mark II - $1250 - Shutter actuations below 15k ish. This was my studio backup body and remained unused for quite a while until my first K-1 died. Upgraded to K-1 Mark II and factory recalibrated with a perfect bill of health in 2018. Excellent condition, looks and shoots like new, full original box, original purchase paperwork + upgrade paperwork, charger, strap, 5x batteries (2x Pentax, 3x third party). Metal hotshoe, screen protector from day 1 unboxing. Probably have another charger too if I can find it.

DFA 24-70 2.8 - $950 - Full box, hood, pouch, caps. Lens is near mint and works perfectly. Even the original sticker on the focus guide is still in place. Comes with B+W XS-PRO DIGITAL UV HAZE NANO.

Pentax AF360 FGZ II - $250 - signs of use, especially on top side due to mounting/dismounting softboxes, one terminal plate has mild/moderate marks due to a battery leaking after a heavy shooting session. Fully functional with no communication issues with camera. Original box, pouch, and base plate.

Pentax AF201 FG - $120 - near mint, original box + pouch.

Total = $2570 /// Discounted full set = $2200

Will entertain offers for different sets, please PM for details. Let me know if you guys need more info/pictures. Willing to also make a trade-in discount for late edition LX or ME-Super that is in good condition.

Yeah. I absolutely love the KP design. Swappable EVF OVF on a KP would be an instant buy. A K-2 full frame version would be awesome too.

K3III Delayed... indefinitely

I think some of the members here are missing the fact that even if the supplier part doesn't change, reliabilities between batches can vary significantly when basically the entire tooling line is new. I wouldn't want a supposedly good solenoid failing later on because QA was rushed. Let's just wait and see. Hopefully we get more firmware upgrades like clean HDMI out.

I'm not saying the stupid $2500-3000 USD range from some youtuber. I mean the actual predicted price by majority of websites around $1800-2000 USD. The Fuji X-S10, X-T4, etc are broadly similar in capabilities at lower price points, and I don't think that anyone would call them a value brand.

I don't need or want Pentax to be the value brand, but I certainly don't want Pentax to become the niche wannabe Leica brand with stupid inflated prices. It's hard not to see this already happening with the K3III prices.

What I do want is for Pentax to bring the design ethos of the limiteds to their bodies, sensible balanced tradeoffs, so the camera + lens can adapt decently to video + sports + landscape/studio without necessarily being the top in any. I'd imagine a lens ecosystem like this would be decently competitive in today's market of bulky, hyper expensive lenses.

ME Super repair?

Just got a non functional ME super given to me for free, so I wanted to take some chances to repair it.

The issues:

- Mirror is stuck in the up position, it can be pushed down with the aperture lever on the side of the tunnel but it will bounce back up immediately so its not sticky seals
- Winder is stuck in locked position
- Shutter is not cocked and the shutter button can be fully pressed, nothing happens

Any clues?

There's a comment underneath which says that the LV focus is a hybrid method which includes PDAF points, and the performance is somewhere between traditional contrast detect and a D780.

Is there a method aside from in camera editing for Pentax to create custom color profiles as it does for Canon and Nikon? Those people have had DSLR cameras with custom profiles able to mimic like 90% of the editing latitude of LOG profiles for basically a decade. That alone will significantly improve usability for semi-pro / enthusiast editing.
