While I am happy to give you an excuse to post the video again, I was thinking there wasn't too much doppler there as the piper and photographer were an almost constant distance apart.

I was thinking more of a stationary photographer and a moving piper, or vice versa.....

QLD weather: Dam burst fears spark evacuation texts to residents

Going from one extreme to the other is going to take its toll on structures like this, something that was probably never really considered during the design phase.

Re: buying another printer, I've been doing that for years. With the amount of printing I actually do at home, buying a cheap printer for $30 and disposing of it when it is empty is considerably cheaper than buying a new set of black and coloured ink cartridges at $59 each. Consumerism? Money grabbing by ink manufacturers? It's a rediculous situation to find yourself in

On that subject, we used to have a couple of aircraft towing tractors for shifting aircraft around. One day the local military police got a radar gun to play with, and pulled over one of our techies for allegedly doing more than 25 mph on the road that ran around the runway. On the day of the charge the techie was asked if he wanted to call any witnesses, to which he replied that he wanted to call the officer in charge of all the mechanical transport on the station (and by default in charge of the tractors}. Said officer was duly called, and was asked what the top speed of the tractors was. The officer replied it was 20 mph as the engine was fitted with a governor.

Case was dismissed, the military police were told not to tell porky pies about speeding when it was not feasible, and after everyone had left the techies shift boss was quietly told to make sure all the engine governors were fitted back onto the tractors......

No disagreements here, David should be put in a big glass box and preserved as a global treasure.

Of all the Pink Floyd tunes over the years, in my opinion the one tune that appears to have the fastest tempo and the one they all seem to have so much fun playing is "Run like Hell". In the UK BBC Scotland used to use it as the theme tune for their sports programme

I'm sorry, have I upset you in some way or are you naturally grumpy?

My desire for information is just that, a desire for information about something I have no knowledge. I tend to find that if I ask questions I find things out.

One day I may just chance my arm and see if my images are good enough.

Thanks Mark, that seems to answer my questions. Much obliged. Funnily enough I was responding to another thread on this forum not too long ago and the discussion was around a similar gallery. At that time I was saying that I was of the opinion that the images that were displayed in the gallery should be nominated by others not necessarily put forward by the, I'll use the term owner. It appears that in this case that is partially correct at least.

I suggest you go back and read my post, and then once you've done that you may want to read your posts and work out exactly where along the way you flew off at a tangent because I don't like your tone.

I am unfamiliar with the PPG, I don't know much about it and so asked a question. I've looked at some of the work on there and it is stunning, but I don't know if I could match up to that standard and don't expect to submit images. I have seen nothing on that website that relates to a vote, there is nothing on that website that indicates what criteria the images need to pass, so you going off at me for not voting is a little difficult to comprehend.

So, going to calm down and try again?

I didn't say ther was anything wrong per se with a air cooled VW engine, just that it somewhat spoiled the effect of an alleged sporty car.....

Cheers for the response, you're correct I am stopping down the aperture and using slow shutter speeds, I guess the desire was to use faster shutter speeds to get over some vibration issues I have been having.

I haven't seen the 150 watt figure mentioned, thanks for that. I'll check the ratings of the lights I currently have and see what I've been working with.

Thanks to everyone for the responses, while I admit the 2 kW is a bit overkill like all "good" ideas it seemed perfectly reasonable at the time......

So can I take it this is just a bigger version of this forum galleries but a bit more public? Somewhere else you can show off your work with the Pentax / Ricoh name big and proud?

Not that I am looking for the publicity, I'm just wondering if my images are good enough to be considered...

I haven't noticed a threat of this ilk around the forum, so if I have missed it please redirect me.

I guess I could have named it "forgive me for I have sinned..." but that may give the wrong idea, but I feel I should relate this tale of how I messed up primarily to educate but also to give you a laugh.

I've been working on desktop macro photography for a while, and always have a problem getting enough light on the subject. I've tried various diy options (I can never justify a proper lighting setup both in terms of space and cost} so when clearing out the garage the other day I came across something that made me think "I wonder if that would work..."

The something in question was a security floodlight that would be attached to the outside of the house. I bought two several years and a couple of houses ago but never got round to wiring them up. They have been moved from place to place under the banner of "that'll come in useful, I'll keep hold of it", but this time I had time on my hands and a will to achieve, so I set about wiring one of them up with a mains plug with the intent of using it as a general worklight.

Anyhow, after checking that yes I was indeed permitted to wire it up myself in this state, I attached a metre or so of three core cable, added a plug on the other end of the cable, and tentatively plugged it into a mains socket in the garage. I waited specifically for a cool day, I didn't want to blow the house RCD when it was hot as the memsahib would not be impressed if the air conditioning went off. Anyway, plugged it in, switched it on, as as the bible says "Let there be light", and there was!

The next step was to see if I could use it for macro work. I took the newly tested floodlight into the house, put it on the table next to the gadget I use to hold the subject of my attentions, and plugged it in. Well the result was fantastic, all of a sudden I could see the difference in light levels on the subject so I set about focusing and adjusting. After about a minute however I looked up from the viewfinder to see a wisp of black smoke. Bit of a panic there, so I immediately pulled the flood light plug out of the mains and went looking for the source of the smoke.

A rapid investigation did not find any electrical issue, but did find a rubber hood over the lens was extremely warm to the touch and slightly sticky.

So children, the lesson for today was - a 2 kw quartz halogen flood light puts out a lot of heat very quickly...........

Anyone else care to share some gaffs while in pursuit of an image?

Back in the eighties when kit cars were coming to be a "thing" in the UK, I was waling through Wolverhampton town centre and saw what initially looked like some form of super car. A low sleek sports body, silver in colour, two seats and a general powerful sporty appeal to it.

As I approached the car the owner came out of a local shop and walked up to the car. He did something on the drivers side and the entire roof popped open gracefully and raised up to give him enough space to climb in. By this time several people had stopped to watch as the driver pressed a button on the dash and the roof closed down again.

What completely spoilt the whole thing was when he started the engine and the unmistakable sound of an air cooled VW Beetle engine was heard.....

VW Beetle chassis seemed to be the go-to for kits at that time, you could rip the body off and have the chassis and driving gear ready to bolt on whatever body you wanted.

I agree with the sentiment Dave, Over the years I've found myself looking at what I consider my "best", but coming back to them months later I feel that I could have done better and don't feel it is as good as I could do now.
