Decisions, decisions... finally got some $$$ to spend.

300mm lens. That's a good example.

We have DA*300 f/4 which you can buy for USD 1,097,-.

Try to get similar lens from Sony...

Sony A-mount 300mm f/2.8 - USD 7,498,-
Sony E-mount 400mm f/2.8 - USD 11,998,- (300mm not existing..?)

f/4 is not f/2.8, that's clear. But so much money for 1 f/stop of light...?

That's right. Best price - performance ratio in the camera business. I'm quite sure.

Even if there's internet connection, would you really share your photos instantly without any RAW post-processing?

Who said that? There are some physical laws in optics and that's exactly the reason why DSLR will survive (while some people might fall off, considering phone camera as sufficient for their photography level, no doubts).

What else (except the mentioned image stabilization) did you like? I played with some of these Sony mirrorless some weeks ago at the local Sony shop and my impression was not good at all. There's also a dedicated group on flickr. To be honest, I didn't find there many photos I'd consider amazing.

Sigma 500mm F4.5 EX DG APO

Of course it is. But imagine a brand new Pentax lens, with equivalent IQ, but faster AF and about half of the weight...

but then again, people's interests and hobbies are changing. In my case the enthusiasm for wildlife photography appeared, well... about 20 years since receiving my first camera.

The market might be saturated, but...
- there are always some new people starting with wildlife shooting (and if there's nothing available from Pentax brand, then they surely don't buy Pentax).
- there are existing Pentax users who might find their way to wildlife photography (and wouldn't it be silly to let them jump ship?)

Well, there are reasons.

Only few lucky guys own the FA*600 beasts (perfect IQ, but very heavy... compared to modern lenses).
The above mentioned Sigma 500 has been unavailable (at least in Europe) since several years already.
What we have is the DA560 (f/5.6 and disputable ergonomy, which discourages many).
Plus the absence of K-3 II successor (with improved AF and higher fps) does not help either.

Speaking about current situation, there's not the right glass and not even the right camera for long telephoto shooting.
No surprise that Canon and Nikon attracts the wildlife photographers more.

And I still think it's a pity, as the knowledge or know-how might still be there. I mean the guys who invented F*600 f/4 back in the 80's...

Probably a stupid idea, but what about some Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign "New Pentax long telephoto prime"?

At least Pentax would know if there's the real demand or not. At the moment we're only guessing.

That's a pity.

500mm f/4 or f/4.5 seems to be a reasonable compromise between light & IQ (on one side) and weight & size / ergonomy (on the other side).
With the benefit that 1.4x / 1.5x TC could be used for extra reach.

Definitely a lens I would buy. Let's hope that we'll get such a lens from Pentax one day.

DA560 seems to be the only option at the moment.

Seems like K-1 II pairs with DFA50 pretty well. Congratulation!

("The glass commitment I have to Nikon is all in telephoto, so running two systems should be totally fine and not create too much conflict." Another point of view: the more people buying DA560 or DFA 150-450 (or both), the bigger chances Pentax might develop new generation of (D) FA* 600 f/4 or something like DFA* 500 mm f/4 or f/4.5. There are reasons why I prefer one system instead of two....)

Sure. If there's not enough light, you can't expect any perfect shot.

That's correct. In bad light condition it's easier to deliver some light to the sensor through shorter lenses than through the long DA560 body tube.

Thanks!

The best would be if you could upload the original DNG file.

If the EXIF is correct...
- ISO800
- f/10
- 1/500s

I'd suggest to set f5.6 or f/6.3 and higher ISO, which would lead to faster shutter speed.
(I personally use the TAV mode for wildlife shooting most of the time.)

And what about a test with some APS-C camera (K-3 instead of K-1, which is IMHO too slow for wildlife shooting anyway)..?

It could be combination of missed focus and motion blur (caused by slower shutter speed).

Prime vs Zoom
560 mm f/5.6 vs 450 mm f/5.6
100 mm vs. 80 mm front element.
No doubts who's the winner in this competition.

DA560

Well, same situation here. We have kind of service company here in CZ, but I have serious doubts if FA* 600 is the kind of lens they have ever seen

After spending some months with K-1 & DFA 150-450, I took a walk with K-3 & DA560 today.

And oh my God, that's a different world. Rat-a-tat-tat, the difference in speed is enormous.

Not any K-1 or KP, my DA560 deserves to be paired with a new APS-C flagship, K-3 III (or however it might be called)!
