SteamLoco: The 1/250th flash sync was an excellent feature....remember those old Thyristor flash units? They were 3/4's the size of the camera body. Some of those flashes didn't have a lock and over time the clasps would fail and they would slide off....I lost a few Vivitar bounce units that way...Oh the 70's and 80's: still miss the cameras, the music and my youth.....

Bought mine 3 maths ago on sale at B&H for $149 and it is always with me, particularly when I drag my K-1 around. Having a small prime lens is always beneficial and it fits nicely in my jacket pocket. I did find a very cool chrome promoter 27mm UV clear filter that protects the lens because I am very proprietary over the tiny and virtually impossible to replace, lens cap--I put it away in a zipped pocket of my vest and it stays there until I'm done. Here's a couple of pics I took with my K-5ii at the Barclays Center during the A-10 Tournament. I had a 50-200mm but for the slightly wider angle and the space saving, I had a nice little prime with me. Here is the 40xs in a large venue....I like the depth of field and the clarity of the edges....

I know..in the box...I'm tempted to give her my low mileage K-S2 and keep the K-50 but, I already have the K-5ii with that great 16.3 MP super sensor and I need more control that the K-5ii has ...but I'm looking forward for her to take some pics and join the Forum...growing the Pentax Brand one person at a time., Once they go Pentax, they get it...Cheers Mack...

Reh: I agree, that's why I have 5 bodies and rotate as necessary...for longevity. My K-3ii now has 7000 clicks on it, but my KP already has 6000 (I got it in December if you remember). K-1 has 1,500 and ironically, is rated for 300K....but with a small telephoto aboard (i.e., SIGMA 24-70mm), its big and heavy for all day toting and shooting.

I think I said the opposite...watching some people chimp every photo means that they are in all likelihood, missing other opportunities while gazing and/or admiring their handiwork...I will only look at any of the photos after I am satisfied with the sequence of pictures taken. I rarely miss the photo op, though I can''t say all of those are 'keepers'....

RICOH is integral to this Forum....The GRII and the GRIII are well respected and many users here have them as walkabout cameras when our DSLRs are not warranted. Have fun here; this is a great place to discourse with fellow photographers and/or to gain knowledge on the medium at large.

Just bought a new in box K-50 with the DA-L 18-55mm and 50-200mm kit lens for a friend of mine. She is starting photography and thought that the K-50 would be a great starter camera. Can't believe I picked up the whole thing for $300 !!! Still bubble wrapped---looking forward to presenting this to her for her Birthday--I think she's gonna love it. I took some of my best pics with the K-50....

The Journey from 'Chimping'

I often do the same.....I rarely 'chimp' on my Leica M9 because it has such a remedial LCD and there is no real way to see how good the image is regardless. On the Pentax recent offerings (K-1/K-3ii/KP), the resolution is good enough to 'chimp' the RAW photo, though I will often look only after I am done with the entire sequence. Many Shooters I see will check after every shot. if you do that then you may miss another photo op by not having the camera at the ready. In fact, I see it all the time.

Growing up with Film cameras we had three or four things to quickly check and that was it. You set your ASA for the film and usually shot the whole role at the same ASA. Focus, aperture to shutter speed and get ready to shoot...Oh yeah, don't forget to advance the role and check your exposure count.

IRIX 15mm -- Pros and Cons

dlh: I'm not saying the IRIX is a bad lens, just not satisfied with how it performs for me. Unfortunately, no one would rent me an IRIX (most people have never heard of the brand) so I bought it, untested and untouched until received. The photos don't do it justice, it is a big boy, but I hope to use it for landscapes later this year on a tripod.

Best wide angle lens for K-1?

I have both and they are excellent values...to me the 12-24 is the sharper of the 2 but I prefer the 24-70 over the similar Tamron version on my K-1. SIGMA's glass seems sharper and better constructed to me, but that is subjective. The only drawback to these lenses are the fact that they are huge in comparison to similar limited designs. The 12-24 is well-balanced on the K-1 because of the body's weight and bulk. I occasionally use these large lenses on my K-3ii, but only with the battery grip attached so it acts as balance. I would never put either lens on my KP because even with the larger grip attached, it still isn't close to balanced.

Still the images are excellent and are great companions for the K-1, particularly as Pentax ekes their way through its Full Frame lens 'roadmap'
