No RAW in Green mode for K-7?

I would like to see custom setting that copies the current camera setup to green mode. And one to reset to factory defaults. That way you *CAN* customize to your hearts content and still have a green mode for hand-off or quick shots etc...

Maybe there are custom user modes for that? I only have a K100D so I am not familiar with the "advanced" bodies. :)

DFS hack

Isnt the DFS only activated at 30sec. exposures or longer?

When is stacking multiple shots unacceptable?

How about using neg. exp. compensation to offset the multiple, and use the bracketing feature to automatically fire off a sequence?

Focus, Focus, Focus (or the usefulness of focus charts)

I played with my K100D a long time ago to understand the AF better.

I took a blank piece of paper, drew a black line on it with a marker, then using AF center point only, started to see how far off the line would the camera still focus.

It turns out the focus "point" is a focus "area" that as I recall, overlaps with the adjacent focus "points". Especially the cross type sensors in the middle. the two points at the edge were much less sensitive.

Go try it. Its illuminating.

K-7 & Metering A Cosina 50mm Manual Lens...

I am not sure about K-7 but many of the other models require a custom setting to enable use of manual lenses.... I think the name of the setting is different on different models.

The K100D has something like "enable use of aperture".

Sorry I cant check right now as my camera is in the shop

Hmmm, thats an interesting thought... I could sell the broken one since it isnt TOTALLY broken. OTOH, I could also keep it for emergency backup...

I am leaning towards buy the k-7 keep the partially broken for backup...

I received the quote from CRIS to repair my K100D.

$225 plus shipping.

1) I can buy an EX+ condition body from KEH for the same price...
2) I can have mine repaired
3) I can put the $225 toward a K-7

What is your advice? the camera works fine in manual mode, just no auto metering (and cant use the kit lens or any DA lens)

I think this chart implies there will be a K-700 around $800 to keep the K-7 price high.

The trouble might be in how to define that camera so that it is better than the K-x but not as good as K-7???

K-x with weather seals? If they would do a repeat of the DS and bring the pentaprism down to the mid level as well, I would buy one...

I guess I am a little nervous now, because I can replace the camera for $215 from KEH... If the repair is going to be at least that, I would save time by not even sending it in...
I have been trying to justify a K7, but it just plain costs too much. Now I am going to be dropping $200 bucks for the same camera I had last year.

I just sent in my K100D for repair. It has a strange behavior.
1) It does not change the aperture with any auto aperture lens.
2) Using Manual mode with a manual aperture setting (with aperture ring) DOES work. It DOES stop down the lens so "green button" metering works also.
Of course using the camera in manual mode is how I almost always work. So I didnt notice this for who knows how long?
Anyway, back to my question. I dont know what to expect from Pentax repair. What was your experience? Good? Bad? How long? How expensive?

My guess is that you have no compelling reason to upgrade. Thats why all the offerings are uncompelling.

the problem isnt the camera. If you had no problems with the D200, then get one of those. The problem may be creative motivation. Maybe spend your money on a trip? a class?

Expertise needed for camera selection

Marc and Lowell nailed it here.

This is the exact internal debate I had when I bought my first DSLR. I knew I would be using manual focus and old lenses.. so I wanted the DS. But it wasnt until SR came out that the whole DSLR thing became a "must" for me.

I just couldn't afford the higher end K10 to get the pentaprism with SR. So I got the K100D. I dont like to use flash and the SR saves so many indoor snapshots. I also dont carry around a tripod and the SR saves so many shots of my kids sports activities... afternoon soccer or baseball games with an M200/4 @ISO800. Even if I get the shutter up to 1/250 to stop subject motion, if I am handholding at 200mm I would lose shots without SR.

That said, I still lose shots because of slow buffer and missed focus. So I am craving the K-7 for the speed and pentaprism (and seals and size)

k-7 finally, a price drop

I suspect that the price depends also on the number of views, and/or the number of saved in basket, wishlist etc...

They can measure demand with more than just sales.

Just by checking the prices over and over you are keeping the price high. :)

We all need to just pretend it doesnt exist until you have saved up the money

k-7+FA50/1.4 vs. D90+AF50/1.4D

But if you do then I found the ISO Perfomance tab to be interesting (and somewhat revealing).

The K20 sensor is just below the 1:1 line. In other words at all settings the measured ISO was a little below the advertised value.

Whereas the D90 was consistently below the K20 (meaning the K20 is slightly more sensitive than the D90 sensor.

*EXCEPT* at ISO100!! the D90 measured the same ISO at 100 as at 200?!?!? If you believe these tests, then Nikon is misrepresenting its ISO range. it measured ISO145-4438 compared with the K20 at ISO 80-5357

so if you are comparing the cameras at BASE ISO all things equal, you are actually giving the D90 a one stop head start. I guess, depends on how you are comparing I suppose.

its a feature called trap-focus.

you can (with careful setup) use AF-S and manual lenses to focus on where your subject *wwill* be when you want the picture. Then when the subject comes into focus.... CLICK you have your image.

Upgrade Advice: Upgrade Lenses or Camera

Well, glass is forever*

However, 1.8 is barely a stop faster than 2.8. Yoiu would have to check your shots to see if they would improve with a stop faster shutter.

Also, basketball is difficult to shoot with a 50mm. It just doesnt have the reach you need for the far end of the court, or the width for the near basket. If you are shooting from mid-court sideline most of your shots will have the back of the player with the ball. This might be ok if you are capturing the defense...

Your Sigma 28-80/2.8 should be a pretty good compromise for shooting hoops from court level.

Preview Method Revisited Wow :-)
Posted By kmccanta

I dont want automatic image preview after every shot, so to get a check on my metering, I would have to take the picture and then hit play to review it... On my K100D this feels a lot slower than just pulling the preview. Also, I *think* that the camera will not return to record mode until its done displaying the image. Whereas the preview is cancelled instantly on half-press of the shutter.

Havent done any measurements, but it seems like if I do much deleting in camera, I burn through the batteries, while I can digital preview all day and never notice the batteries draining.

If you really only care about the mentioned usage, then I dont see any body features that would matter to you.

The only low light usage you list is landscape and night shots... both of these are going to require heavy intervention by you with metering. In other words, you arent going to put any camera on 'P' and get the shot you want in these circumstances.

Also, these do not require fast Autofocus. So the K20's low light performance should be just fine!

I think you are just buying the sensor... so do you want 14.9, 10 or 6MP? the extra resolution of the 14.9 may be noticeable in your landscapes, depending on how you view them.

so I would say K20D if you want resale value, or GX20 if you just want least expensive.

So can you help me understand what I am seeing in these clips? The motion looks jerky... is this the frame rate being too low? or the shutter speed too high?

Or... maybe I am catching on here... its the shutter speed being too high for the frame rate.... I didnt understand Psynema's previous comments on Tv/Frame rate ... now I think I get it. These would look smoother if the shutter speed was slower, adding motion blur to each frame. OR if the frame rate was higher to "interpolate" the motion between frames by adding more frames.

Did I catch on?

Google comes up with this:

"What is the Boot Test?

A "boot" is one of the biggest pitfalls associated with a 1031 tax exchange. Under the rules of a 1031 tax exchange, only real property held for business or investment can be exchanged. There are a number of things that, if included in the exchange, can trigger a substantial capital gains tax bill. "Boot" is anything that is in the trade that is not like-kind property.

The most common types of boot are mortgage boot and cash boot. Mortgage boot becomes an issue when the mortgage debt on the property you buy is less than the mortgage debt on the property you are selling. Similarly, cash boot reflects any cash or other value received that is not real estate investment property, including a promissory note."

WTF?

Considering waiting for the K7 - some lens questions/recs?

I would second the FA 35/2 and/or the FA 50/1.4 I have both a like them. all FA lenses come from the old film days and as such they cover the full 35mm image circle.

In the FA line, you should consider the limiteds : FA 31/1.8ltd, FA 43/1.7 ltd (there is also the FA77 but this is out of your range)

The Tamron 28-75/2.8 gets rave reviews, although a little short for your stated desires.

problem with K100D ... no matrix metering

DA and FA lenses work in Av and Manual like expected. Metering works fine. Aperture can be adjusted in camera and the shutter is adjusted with meter reading (in Av).

But Tv and P just flash the F stop and shutter speed.... A lot of my lenses are manual so I wouldnt have noticed a problem for a while.

Other than wiping contacts clean with sensor cleaner, does anyone have any other ideas?

I would hate to spend money on the K100D while waiting to afford a K-7
